White Georgia teens celebrate graduation with a Drake lyric (they chose poorly)

I don't think any harm was intended by them using the word, but they should obviously know better than to use it at all.

Non black people saying "nigga" makes me cringe so fucking hard.

I don't know. Depends how/when it's used. So many non-black kids like Punjabi/Vietnamese/Fijian/Persian said it all the time in BC. Usually just joking with friends or because hip-hop was/is huge. Don't really remember white people saying it, just awkward.

These students are obviously racist and shouldn't be allowed to study at university.

I am not. If we let these students progress into their academic careers and spread their agenda and racist views, what kind of behaviour are we encouraging and where do we draw the line. The 'n' word is a historically terrible, demeaning word and these students should be reprimanded.

Not sure if srs. I agree it's poor word choice especially for a prank that's on the school and they'll be reprimanded, but to say they don't deserve to go to university and have an agenda/spreading their racist views? Nigger is a historically terrible and demeaning word, but surely you can see how the phrase "nigga we made it" in reference to them graduating school is not the same? Especially when they say it's because of Drake lyrics. So many use his phrases like yolo, started from the bottom now we here.

Uh... So would you be fine with incarcerating these people? Or how about killing them, so those racists can't live to breed? Why the half measures?

As a non-American I have a hard time wrapping my mind around this. The word is used commercially, in pop songs like this one by Drake. It is then marketed and sold to kids and like most pop artists intended for kids to like, sing along to and emulate. Which they do, but then people get upset when they do. They should know better, they should understand.

But here is the thing. The word is used in a song, light hearted, commercial. Like it isn't a big deal, even though it quite obviously is and very rightfully so.

So why isn't this explained to those kids and why isn't the outrage aimed at Drake and other artists who so carelessly use the word and teach kids like these that it's a cool and hip thing to say and use? To me that is where your anger should be aimed. That word and other slurs like it either need to not be used at all or only used for education of how bad they are. But if you have commercial pop songs make light of them and even make them hip and cool, then it seems to me that that is where your problem lies.

Not racism if they're literally quoting a rap lyric. Just stupid and immature as hell to have profanity in your senior motto. I'd be more embarrassed if the kids involved were black, honestly.

What's the big deal? The blacks call each other "nigga" all the time. Why can't I ignore historical context and say it too?

Me not being able to to say it is reverse racism. This conditional usage bullshit has to end.

Conditional usage in language is a norm. There's things you can and can't say to others outside of race. Much like I can't go up to your significant other on the random and call them "honey" or some other pet name.

The word is a part of the conditional usage, in that you should probably watch where and how you use it. It has a clear and present history and while black people have put effort into retaking the word, it still retains a lot of its power as a racial slur. It's not reverse racism, it's the acknowledgement of how it was previously used and of your possible connection to the racial minority it was used against. Drake saying "nigga" is taken different from Teg Nugent saying it.

These white kids were dumb. Someone just needs to tell them that and send them on their way.

I don't think this specific case was that bad, I don't think they had any ill intent. What usually gets me about the "White kids using the n word" threads that we get here every so often is that the actually story usually isn't any where near as bad as the people who come to the threads and try to rationalize/defend their usage of it.

I'm 99% sure he was being sarcastic
I hope

This PC shit in this country is ridiculous. Get over it. It's a common word used in the majority of teenagers music.

They're literally quoting a lyric from a popular song.

Seriously any faux outrage about this is ridiculous. Tell the kids the sign was stupid and move on.

Pretty much. Was it stupid to do? Yes, because of exactly this shit coming out of it, but seriously it's a freaking popular song lyric. There are LOTS of offensive things in songs that people sing or quote all the time.

Was I too subtle? I thought for sure "Why can't I ignore historical context and say it too?" would make it obvious.

Hispanic kids here in Miami do it all the time. Can they get away with that or something?

No they can't. I have found that people who use "nigga" who aren't black are often the first people who turn around and call black people "niggers."

No one gets a "nigga pass" if they aren't black, regardless of what their one black friend says.

Also the fact that this is a song lyric doesn't mean shit to a black person who doesn't want to see that nonsense hanging from a building.

I'm sure that argument has been made on GAF non-sarcastically.

Something similar and far worse. "I tell nigger jokes with my friends, but not around black people so I'm not a racist."

As a resident of Forsyth county I'd like to point out that there is a decent Indian and Mexican population, probably making up 20% or so of the residents. No fun allowed. Carry on.
