Mario Kart 8 - Review thread

the Mario Kart Bundle @ 330 is a decent deal for someone completely new to Wii..

Deluxe System - 200 (You can find it for 200 Furb'd or 250 new)
Wiimote Plus w / wheel 35 + 5
Mario Kart 8 Game 60.00
Additional Free game with Nintendo Club Registration.. 50.00

Roughly a 350 to 400 dollar value... Not to mention you get free online and backwards compatibility.

It has value ... I dont get why people are complaining ..

Yep! It's very good deal. The shit is that Nintendo got me when they announced Wind Waker HD bundle. I could not resist.

Was excited about the free game so was about to order it - turns out, not eligible for my country - *yay*

We'll just wait a bit longer then Nintendo.

The MK8 bundle is easily the best deal Nintendo's put out, especially for people who didn't own Wii.

But I (even as a pretty satisfied Wii U owner) can't help feeling that I still can't say it's valued correctly for the price in good conscience.

Wii was only able to justify a $250 price tag off the energy and excitement behind its launch and its software roadmap. Wii U has neither of those, and HD and the GamePad don't really offset this enough to add $100 to the "standard" $200 price of entry. Plus, the software - while good - has tended to feel like it might as well have just been on Wii. Not the best way to kick off a new console.

I'm an exception. Most of the software that's come out so far (3D World in particular) is stuff I wanted out of Nintendo anyway (even if some of it was really held back from its potential: I'm lookin' at you, NSMBU), so I'm pretty happy.

I'm from Brazil. Most of people here uses a North American address to get the digital reward. Though we can't order any physical reward. But that's enough for me.

just looked at them 60 fps videos and it looked like 60 fps but when on a corner it looks like there is a bit of stuttering but I downloaded the MP4 files and wow totally smooth download the mp4 files best video ive seen to this date but you need to download not stream amazing and I have a gaming PC well impressed

How will most of you be playing this game? Will you use the Wii mote / wheel combo, the tablet or the pro controller?

Is it too early to ask this question? I'd still like to hear what you have to say on this subject.

For MK Wii I used the wii remote & nunchuck, I felt the most comfortable with it. I'll probably be doing the same for this game.

Nothing has been said about additional Downloadable Content for Mario Kart 8, though I think it would be a missed opportunity if they didn't take that chance & offer some of the omissions from the roster. (Goombella & Fawful, anyone?)

Yes, for the love of god give Fawful a voice.

Paste Magazine gives it an 8.8

"The other notable omission is in the cast of characters’ diversity. After 30 years there are still zero Mario characters of color, a problem that Mario Kart 8 highlights by lining up all the characters on a single screen. When it comes to human characters, Mario Kart 8 is overwhelmingly white. Of the 29 drivers, 14 are human (including Toad and Toadette), and every single one of them is white. While it’d be atypical of Nintendo to introduce new characters into a Mario Kart game, it’s also where the deficit is the most obvious, and during play I found myself disappointed that Nintendo’s stable of characters so painfully fails to reflect the diversity of its audience."

the idea that Mario should feature a more diverse cast isn't terrible, but the way this is written just makes me laugh. Also, are Miis available to use as racers?

Seems like a really improved Mario Kart experience. Not sure if I can still bring myself to break my "No more Mario Kart" rule, but maybe if a price drops. Unfortunately with Nintendo they may be like an eternity. They sold NSMB DS at original MSRP for like twenty two years straight or some shit :(

Those visuals are some hot fire though, they really pushed the Wii U to make a game I genuinely find visually appealing. I rarely find last gen games very much to look at anymore, with their sub-HD resolutions at times and awful framerates.

I might go with wii remote & nunchuck, Gamepad for off screen but I will mostly be using the Pro controller.

Mii are in Mario Kart 8 which makes Paste Magazine comment fall apart. Plus Donkey Kong is brown and I have brown skin, soooo that's something. ;)

Look at it this way. Buy it at release or within a month after release and you pay 30 bucks for mk8 and 30 bucks for another first party Nintendo title.

Gametrailers' review sounds so begrudging.

Indeed, I also hated how it started with the Wii U and claiming how it's hard to review a game without talking about the Wii U low sales. That crap was so pointless and unneeded for Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze review and it's the same for Mario Kart 8.

Gamexplain reviews are so much better, especially now that they gotten rid of scores it's all about their thought about the game and that's how it should be.

Personally speaking, I don't think putting any rules or values will do you any good when it comes to entertainment. Enjoy what you want to enjoy, and if its support you are worried about then I'm sure you can find means to enjoy the product without directly giving the money to Nintendo (borrowing from a friend, renting it, etc.). There's really no reason to forbid yourself from enjoying what is, at the end of the day, harmless fun.

Anyway, on topic. I'm very pleased to see the reviews confirming my initial thoughts. But I'll have to play the game first hand to really come down with the final judgement.

Loving the look of this game. Another reason for me to pick up a Wii U. Only major downside for me is the lack of battle arenas. Battle mode isn't quite the same experience on the race tracks.

Impress me with Zelda at E3 and you'll have me back on board, Nintendo.

If you want a game(and can afford to) buy it, dont restrict yourself with arbitrary rules.

I missed it; why would they so that?

I'm sure the comments were mostly people pissed off at their two semi-negative reviews. Honestly, though, the site in general seems like it has had a real axe to grind with Mario Kart 8 for a while, and this is coming from someone who really doesn't care all that much about Mario Kart 8 or MK in general. It's super weird.

Ah I see. But the writen review on their site is still live. Was the video review even more negative?

A price drop is very unlikely to happen in the foreseeable future. Just curious - why do you have a "No more Mario Kart" rule?

It's not arbitrary, the rule is there because I haven't been enjoying the latest Mario Kart games for a while now. Too many game balance breaking items and abilities, too many failed opportunities to genuinely improve or innovate on stale or in need of refinement mechanics.

What I'm saying is that what I'm reading makes me think maybe it's worth giving Mario Kart a try again, but because of my increasingly bad experience with the series for the past eight years, it's hard to want to buy-in at full price.

But we'll see. Maybe i can use some of my power up reward points from Gamestop or something, I must have a shitton available from trades.

So hyped for this. Mario Kart Wii felt like a disappointment to me, and MKWiiU seems to be even more promising than the already awesome 3DS version, so this is looking like it's gonna be a hefty leap between both console entries.

Yea bit. They seemed to be very let down by the lack of dedicated battle mode. Which i can understand as I feel the same way. Everything else about the game looks amazing, so i expected the same from battle mode. Makes the omission glaring when found in what appears to be an otherwise tight package.

The only part that I can see as being "begrudging" is this part. What happened to battle mode stinks.

That Eurogamer review... "Video games have been this detailed before, but never with such imagination, grace and humour."

Bold statements. Getting seriously excited reading that.

Any mentions on the final rendering resolution? Game looks fantastic!
720p

Do you know when and where this was confirmed? I've seen sites claim both 720p

The graphics are crisp, detailed, and very dense in design, and not to mention this game runs at a rock solid 60FPS and at 720p -- which not only benefits the gameplay, but also the visuals.

As well as 1080p

The game's visuals are beautiful, 1080p and 60fps even in two-player split-screen, while new characters and weapons such as the Piranha Plant keep things feeling fresh amongst otherwise familiar surroundings.

I agree. I'd love to be racing through Hyrule, the planets in the Lylat system or the Pokémon world.

That would be amazing, but it will never happen. You have no idea how disappointed I was when the Rosalina reveal trailer ended up being a Smash trailer, and not an announcement of MK8 being retooled into Nintendo Kart.

As someone who doesn't own a Wii U, it's a major consideration. Even if the game was flawless I'm not sure I want to spend money on a console that many would label dead if not for the first-party games. It's the only real factor holding me back from pulling the trigger on the bundle at the moment.

Kohler's review bums me out and you can see a lot of his issues with the game echoed in other reviews. I don't understand the decision to not make custom arenas for Battle Mode.

I'll join you on the fence. The free game is tempting and I'm sure online will be fun if nothing else.

Nope.
Why does everything Nintendo creates need to turn into Smash?

It would allow Nintendo to freshen up locales, character rosters and power ups. Nintendo Kart could be interesting even if it is a spin off.

Did they run out of time? Is that why they botched battle mode?

Nintendo seems to be confused on what constitutes a good battle mode. The history of the kart series seems to be hit or miss. MKDS seemed to have it perfectly and I thought they'd have learned after that...

You could ask for a friend to lend it to you for a while. Or use that >return at full price thing gamestop has for pre owned games.

It's not rocket science. The fact that they just applied battle mode to the existing maps.... either no foresight or laziness.

I don't know.
Mario Kart already has a lot of track diversity. :P
I don't think a big green field next to a castle, or a random alien planet would really add much more to the experience.
