I want to go back to sega too

$5 bucks says all those figurines Sakurai flashed in the Developer Direct are going to play a role in Nintendo's NFC plans.

Problem is that they already existed for like couple of years. I would like to believe that Samus, Link and Pit are the figma that got released during last two years. I'm pretty sure that they would go with new figurines if it exists.

takamaru being a samurai would give him way different movesets than the other sword users, which is mostly based around fencing.

Takamaru would be a great hybrid of Sheik and Marth/Ike. I think...

Hell, what's Takamaru supposed to do? Thanks god his game is coming this week.

takamaru is basically a mix of a ninja and samurai, his attacks are mostly long range shurikan but attacks with his sword at close range, his gameplay, and therefore his character is very fast and reactionary(for a NES game atleast).
thts what makes him perfect but also unique for a character action game.

Takamaru's a samurai, but his special moves are called "ninja arts" -- so he's technically a samurai/ninja hybrid. He uses a traditional samurai katana, but he also does things typically associated with ninja, like throwing shuriken, using explosives, and disappearing.

Yeah, I thought it was weird he was barely in the direct at all.

It doesn't seem like they've changed him too much but I'm curious as to what his buffs are.

The prolonged segment in the Direct when Sakurai mentioned character changes showing Sonic doing a combo revealed that his D-Air has meteor smash capabilities now. It's not really that significant though since using that attack off stage is an incredible risk.

Beyond that it seems like any changes in the slideshow were characters they're probably balancing but haven't really settled on yet. The only real buff Sonic needs is a power buff and at least one more move with good knockback that is reasonable to land.

I wish they took his Sonic Eagle from Battle. Hell even Project M had it and he was infinitely better because of it.

Isaac will be in the gane as a playable character! Believe!

I will stick by this till the very end!

It is kind of funny how little attention Sonic has gotten past his initial reveal.

I'm kinda bummed out about how little love Sonic seems to be getting, to be honest.

I mean, in Brawl, it was justified by his being a very late addition. I was hoping that maybe this time, with Sonic planned as a character from the start (presumably), his inclusion would come with a bit more series fanservice (but not that kind of Sonic series fanservice, before anyone gets any funny ideas).

I'm honestly not sure what I'm expecting, but, I mean, Snake got codec conversations and a decent sized role in SSE, Mega Man clearly has a ton of love and care put into his inclusion, assuming Pac-Man is in, it seems that his Namco arcade roots will be getting decent representation via the S-Flag and Galaga enemies... like, I dunno. I know people are just sorta like "fuck Sonic whatever" but I still think he's cool and would like to see more love for him. Maybe at least some good music remixes this time (though using Sonic Heroes for the trailer doesn't have me optimistic).

I'm probably in the minority here (since I constantly see people calling Sonic "boring"), but I'm glad Sonic's move set is relegated to the '90s. I fell out of favor with the Sonic series in the 2000s, and giving him a bunch of bizarre power-ups or whatever from the recent games wouldn't sit well with me. I like that Smash Bros. Sonic is just a fast spinny guy -- that's how I remember him from my childhood, and that's what I associate his best games with.

I really don't believe in Takamaru's inclusion. I feel the only precedent for it is Nintendo Land having a game based on it, and even then that is a pretty large stretch since it feels like the game was given the Takamaru label after conception since it's the closest thing they can associate the game's gimmick with. Nintendo Land is, after all, basically a collection of tech demo mini games.

Of course I might be biased on account of being bored of sword users. I remember Sakurai saying he preferred to pick characters that aren't built around fighting abilities and I can agree with that since it feels so much more interesting to go with other, more unorthodox choices. Let some dues be paid obviously for inclusions like Ike and possibly Chrom but I don't feel Takamaru fits that bill.

I understand this is your opinion but again I don't understand the ambivalence shown towards both sword/blade users and sword styles when picking newcomers for Smash rosters. To use an old post I made on the issue:

Absolutely, we have a metric fuckton of swordsmen already, the "evil warlock" part of Ganondorf is the best Ganondorf. You could do so much with a heavy magician character.

Disagree on the bolded, but agreed on warlock Ganondorf being best dorf.

Smash has had:

Fencing: Marth/Roy
Heavy Swordsman: Ike
Knights: Link/Toon Link/Young Link
Knives but actually a bow thing: Pit
Hyper cartoony whirlwind of cuts: Metaknight

And that's it for both the styles and bladed weapons represented in four games over a 15 year run. It's time for people to stop saying Smash has too many sword people, especially when I still don't have any draw/sheathe types, magic swordsmen/red mages, or rogues/thieves whatsoever.

I think it's stupidly reductionist to say that a character with a sword can't be interesting or diversify themselves enough from others already in the roster to be a good newcomer and it's one of the top 3 things that continues to grate at me when newcomer discussions go down in Smash threads.
This also makes me sad because it shows that there aren't a lot of people who've watched Rurouni Kenshin or played Last Blade/Guilty Gear.

Well, his physical moves clearly take inspiration from games like Sonic the Fighters. I do agree with your sentiment, though Sonic does need to have some of his acrobatic nature infused they mostly nail the part about Sonic and the fact that he spins.

He's insanely fun to play as but he has a really hard time to KO anything which is a huge bummer in my opinion.

The whole argument of too many sword wielders is irrelevant considering there are more characters that use their hands and feet. That said Ganondorf can easily be pro magic or go melee with a sword or Trident like weapon. He can even go dual swords. I think that while Ganondorf should be a massive power character he should be able to be the best of Link and Zelda and be able to use sheer power with a melee weapon while also having some technical and moderately damaging magic attacks.

Kyzon's changes to Ganondorf's specials are easily the best thing they could do while retaining a number of his normals (Thunderstomp/Dair and Fair in particular). It covers all the bases you've mentioned here and then some. I'm a really big fan of the teleport that swaps places with the other character if the portal opens up near enough to them.

I'm hoping for at least 5+ characters revelead at e3, be it new comers(I bet 2) or someone who was on the game previously

What are Kyzon's changes exactly? I am too dumb to know what they are.

Oh cool. It seemed weird to me that he looked like a samurai but he used stars. Thanks for the clarification.

I doubt the Roundtable conference is going to involve Sakurai explaining the moves to the press.
Nintendo UK tries to make us forget the NFC slip!

Source
No confirm, no deny...the exact opposite of what happened when the hardware rumour surfaced: in that case, they flat out denied the possibility.
So...it's happening, gentlemen?
Nintendo UK didn't slip up anything though, it was Nintendo France.

And this doesn't seem to be a new update. The article is from May 22nd and it doesn't mention when it was updated.

$40+ figurines for NFC stuff. Hooray!

I get where you're coming from and as I've already mentioned, I've acknowledged that certain characters have paid their dues. The problem in my opinion comes from a frame of reference standpoint. I wouldn't group characters like Meta Knight and Pit into the "swordsmen" category simply on the basis that the former is a character built around the otherworldly principles of Kirby's universe with him retaining deception powers and flight ability, while Pit is just a celestial mercenary meaning a sword is just a part of a huge arsenal. In a way the same goes for Link; he has a plethora of more weapons at his disposal.

Where things get a lot general is with the Fire Emblem characters we have. Their abilities begin and end with their swords. That's not necessarily a bad thing obviously, and again, Fire Emblem is a lot more ingrained as a Nintendo franchise. I don't think Takamaru is able to claim the same at a surface level. Speaking personally I find his design mostly uninspired and his abilities don't seem that interesting to make a spin on so based on what's there I just don't find that as exciting.

That said if Sakurai gave him a Pit-style makeover and incorporated completely brand new things then that could turn out fine. But as he is I think it's a relatively "meh" choice to go with.

Totally agreed with this.

Totally agreed with this.
I'm against Sonic being sick with his old style of moves. He does not look like Classic Sonic but Modern Sonic. Have you two bothered playing the games? I want to see the Wii Era games represented as they had his coolest abilities and more interesting storylines. (Not bring Archie Sonic into this. )

I too want Werehog Sonic donning an armor and a sword, kissing a human girl in the Victory celebration.

Dear god, NO
EDIT: New page, really? :/
