Disappointed by Ending of Tomb Raider Reboot [spoilers duh]

Upside, inside out he's livin la vida loca, He'll push and pull you down, livin la vida loca
My point was that Uncharted 2 had an actual final boss fight, which was quite annoying for some people, and in Uncharted 3 we basically got a QTE final fight.
Ah right, that is true.
To be honest, I don't really remember much of U3 save for the ship, ship graveyard and the desert.

Loved the ending. It took way too long to get supernatural. I kept up with the story mostly because it kept not so subtly hinting at going supernatural. I thought it was stupid in the beginning trying to be "real".

Uncharted 3's problem that it tried to avoid going supernatural and explaining stuff.

These are Indiana Jones stories and your supposed to go supernatural. Indy 4's problem was not the aliens. It was everything else.

Just finished it a few nights ago and loved it from beginning to end. I'd agree that Lara was OP for the last couple of hours. The encounters were less satisfying and there were simply too many enemies not to use explosive power. I tried sticking to my bow and close-combat skills as often as I could.

I appreciate the supernatural aspect of it and I feel they balanced it pretty nicely with realism.

Really great game. Hoping to see the sequel soon.

I thought the whole story was incredibly corny, over-serious and badly written. If the writers embraced the b-movie quality a bit and added even a little bit of humor, it could have been much, much better.

The whole "Lara is a survivor" theme was so overdone and cringe-worthy. They even hit you over a head with it with the "A survivor is born!" quote at the end, just in case you didn't pick up on the fact that this was a super serious, mature adult game for serious adults.

I liked the graphics and the gameplay though.

I too felt that the last battle was very anticlimactic and kind of a QTE, but this game never really had transcendent gameplay so it wasn't much of a disappointment to me. It was solid, through and through, and I enjoyed it up through the end even if it went out with a whimper rather than a bang gameplay-wise. Overally I'd call it a solid effort, and I'd play another one if they added a bit more depth to the combat and maybe some more fucking tombs.

HAH! I did the same thing at that moment. And all of that for a stupid wrench or whatever it was. I don't mean to imply that the game is bad. I don't finish bad games, especially long games. The core game play was fun, the graphics were great, and I really loved the item progression and crafting. But there were issues that got in the way of the fun, hence this thread.

I thought the items and crafting were the worst aspect of the game. TR was incredibly easy to such an extent that I played as much as possible with only the bow and attempted headshots 99% of the time for added challenge. When I got the first pistol, I thought it would be weak and ammunition scarce. I certainly didn't expect to end up with a full arsenal of powerful guns and explosives. But nope, you're maxed out with ammo throughout and able to blast everyone away with complete ease.

Hunting was almost pointless. Crafting was just collect points from things, go back to camp, repeat. In board gaming, weak gameplay mechanics like these, divorced from the story itself, are known as lack of theme. The survival aspect is entirely unconvincing and not there past the first hour or so.

Having completed the game recently on the PS4, I think the ending is actually pretty decent. My main issue with the whole experience is definitely the clichéd story and your completely unlikeable and rather worthless "comrades" sans maybe one particular individual.

What I hated about the final battle with the cult leader was [spoilers] that I got my second gun and the prompts to shoot at him. I aimed and fire at his face probably five times, but he wouldn't die, so he killed me. Turns out you gotta shoot him until he falls off the edge. Why do you tease me with the dual guns if your only chance to use them is a QTE?

Agree with this. Why make the last battle a qte? Just made a disappointing game even more disappointing.

Not a fan of boss battles so this one being a bit "huh?" didn't stop me from loving the game. Tomb Raider did very well with the key areas of story and game play.

and any game with flaming arrows is awesome.

Ending didn't bother me because I had come to terms with the things I didn't like about the story long before I got to the end. Overall I thought it was an incredible game that could've been elevated to legendary status had they done two things:

1) Show some restraint with bouncing Lara off of rocks, the ground, walls, etc. She takes such a beating that it gets pretty absurd rather quickly. The game is clearly going for a sense of realism and believability, but they have her get impaled by a stick and then get all banged up and she keeps pressing on like she's the black knight in Monty Python. They could've had her get hurt and then take the time to show her get some real medical attention and that would've made all the difference. Camping out for a night and eating deer meat isn't going to heal an impaling.

2) Provide backstory for her fantastic aim and adaptability with guns. Its such a quick transition and she kills so many dudes that its way more "gamey" than the original Tomb Raider ever seemed back in the day. Increase the number of mythological puzzles and tombs to explore and dial back the killcount a little bit. Problem solved.

But yeah, I still loved it. Very happy to own the DE for my PS4.

Well i felt the story overall was a letdown. The start of it had promise but all of the emotional or big twist never hit for me. The whole you want to care and protect Lara always felt superficial and after playing the game it felt even more so. Being sad for killing a deer for food happens one time. After that you never have to worry about food or killing wild life. Shortly after that you have your first human kill. After that point you no longer have any remorse or care for murder people back to back.

The game makes these things a big deal but don't spend the time to do any of them justice. The story at the end just fall into magic and spirits did it with no real mystery left to crack. The game play was awesome from the weapon crafting to the exploring new areas. Made upgrades all the more useful. So i hope they kick the story up a notch and keep all the great game play bits.

That boss fight was OK on Normal, but a total nightmare on Hard. I think he threw five or six grenades at you at once, any one of which could kill you.

On Crushing I used a glitch to beat him.

I have no qualms in saying I was satisfied by the story of Tomb Raider, which is odd because I did not expect it to have any sort of pull for me.

I was disappointed with the whole game, but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it at all. I think there's a lot of potential and am looking forward to the next one

BA Lara Comfirmed. I am totaly on board for the next game unlike everyone else. I loved Lara bad ass nature and that basically she is a killer and doesn't give a shit and wants to do it again. They could really play off of her wanting to kill things.(I don't know about you but I was pretty sure she was enjoying it 2/3s of the way through the game.)

Her progression really reminded me of Spec-Ops' dialog.

It had the exact same plot as Far Cry 3, but people don't criticize that story the same way they do TR13.

Huh? Yes they do, hell FC3's plot has probably been piledrived by people even harder than TR2013. Which makes sense as TR2013 at least has a non-standard protagonist (at least visually) and didn't have the writer try to explain all the bad stuff away as *you just don't get it*.

I hope the next TR game takes place a few years later after Lara has become a seasoned veteran. and then give us some atmospheric creepy puzzle solving just like in the OG Tomb Raider 1. most of the enemies should be wild animals, not humans...

Is it me or does it feel like the final hour (or so) of the game just gives up on trying...

i was anticipating the battle with the giant samurai beast since he was introduced maybe halfway through the game...and once that battle was over it felt like the most boring let down of a boss battle.

THEN

the end battle with the the cult leader, christ, if you can even call it that....

just pure disappointment for such an exciting preceding adventure

I feel like once you were done with the beach sections the game just started falling flat, with story, action, challenge, fights...everything.

game should have been some hours shorter.

overall a well tailored experience though.

totally agree with you on that.

While I thought it was neat that she dual wielded two guns, the final boss pretty much being a QTE is something I really wish modern AAA games would stop doing.

totally agree with this too, and aside from the QTE's... the "set pieces scenarios" needs to go to.

I remember playing BF3... and I kept dying on the first stage because a sniper was shooting me from a window, I was trying to snipe him back... but no... I had to move from point A to point B, pickup a rocket launcher and blow up the whole damn building... because that's how the game wanted me to beat it. I immediately knew that that game was not for me, thank god it was a PS Plus freebie.

if the devs are too lazy to give options to the player, at least they should design the levels so it don't look like there are options to beat them.

Gen X

Trust no one. Eat steaks.
I couldn't stand Tomb Raider. I played a few levels of the first one although my missus at the time finished both the first and second one so I still saw a majority of them both. I just hated the mechanics of them and how you were essentially always moving one square at a time. (I've never played nor seen that Underworld one that came out a few years ago).

However, thanks to IGC and all the positive feedback I tried the reboot and loved it. It felt more of an Uncharted clone with more satisfying combat and was also a great length too. The ending with the dual welding was the icing on the cake and a great homage to the original series despite my feelings about them.

They can't give up on something they never do. The game never tries. It never challenges the player and the narrative and characters are consistently terrible throughout the game. It's well made but extremely shallow.

The end game certainly was disappointing. They did do a fair job of building up the stormguard as a serious supernatural threat but then they turn out to just be the same dudes you've already been fighting ad nauseam for the whole game with different skins.

Yeah, I was VERY letdown by the last part of the game. After enjoying my time with it for so long, I was expecting a much better payoff.

I'm with you. I got a Lost vibe from the story up until the end, and then it all fell apart.

Before any of you say "Just like Lost," I liked the end of Lost. So.

I loved everything about TR. It really clicked with me and what I was looking for at the time. The whole lead up to the final boss and ending really clicked with me. Lara yelling at the enemies about how she's going to kill them all was really dope for me. At that point of the game I'd imagine Lara went in full on fuck it mode, which made the end with the dual pistols even more awesome.

I might replay TR on my ps4 again once I get my new TV in a week. Such a fun game.

I liked how the ancient samurai ghost things that were fucking up generations of people could be subdued by bullets. Like no one ever tried that before.

Actually just finished playing the DE. Enjoyed it more the second time tbh, although the last hour does sort of come out of nowhere. Much easier than I remember as well.

Story was fine.

The only bit I really didn't like was that guy
sacrificing his life for some tool. I think it was just a common wrench or something.
I'll definitely double dip when I get a new console.

The overall game is fine to me.

The story isn't that good, but I liked the gameplay. The most goofy thing was she becoming a killing machine after two days. lol

Despite liking the game I was also a little disappointed by it. I hope a sequel can improve upon what was good about the reboot but also bring back the puzzles from the previous games

They kept the entire Japanese and presumably US/international military and hundreds of castaways at bay for decades but they were no match for a grad student with no military experience and 4 different weapons.

To be fair, I'm pretty sure the game spans at least 5-6 days. That's more than enough time for Lara to awaken to her Predator heritage. What a heritage it was. I think I'll play TR right now.

I liked the story. Survival drives the whole thing. Lara never really has a choice. Finding all the lost documents really fleshed everything out. It's also great that the bad guy called Lara out for killing everybody. It makes you think what she would have become head she have been on that island as long as him.

The ending was just the right amount of supernatural. Plus having her holding two guns at the same time at the end of the game was pretty cool.

I really enjoyed the game, but don't remember much about the story or anything about the ending so maybe it wasn't too great. Either that, or my memory is in the trash can.

I enjoyed the story. I didn't mind the ending part either, I mean you still had a 'challenging' battle as far as that game goes right before, the fact that it's a QTE? whatever I just consider it part of the cutscenes for beating the game. Easily top 3 games of last year to me still.

It was a Reveal of how she became that Iconic character, once I saw that moment with the dual guns I was blown away.

This is how it felt for me, I blame the supporting characters being lackluster
the nerdy nathan drake moment was kinda dad but oh well.

It was a really fun game, but partway in, killing guys started to feel like popping bubble wrap: it was fun, but easy and pointless most of the time. The stealth was actually surprisingly decent, and the bow was really fun, but the best parts of the game for me were the platforming and puzzles, and there weren't enough of either.

What I really could have done without were so many of the parts where the level breaks up around Lara. Two or three times would have been no problem, but it just happened so often and it wasn't really fun to run or slide down tubes and dodge obstacles. The rapids section also had one part where I couldn't tell where to go and I got impaled ten times in a row. That budget should have been spent on adding puzzles and fleshing out the tombs. The world was great, and I loved all the artifacts and lore, although the supporting cast was quite bland.
