Super Smash Bros. Invitational @ E3 2014 participants, hosts and rules detailed

Amsa will be in the US during the summer for all the big melee tournaments. The smash bros sub reddit crowd funded him to come over here.

But the earliest he would be here would be the week of June 20th for MLG Anaheim, so... either he's staying here through all of June or he's going back to Japan after E3 and then flying back in a few days before MLG.

Trying not to get hype. This can seriously backfire if the game turns out like Brawl. Still, good to see Nintendo inviting the big players and actually acknowledge the hardcore crowd exists.

I'm actually very happy the top Smash players right now aren't invited. Mango and Armada have been winning so much in the past year alone in smash, let some more players shine!

As for M2K...yikes, I actually thought he was a shoo-in.

I hope we see Geoff and Reggie go head-to-head in Smash Bros.

The Gamecube controller adapter is the best part of this announcement. Will buy immediately when available.

Such hype! Now this is just wishful thinking but man I'd love it if after the tournament, Nintendo were like "The build of Smash Bros Wii U we used for the tournament is now available on the eShop".

Oh and,

Was he sick? I mean it had to be an accident right?
He got drunk in Japan and vomited on his host's futon. I think his host had to pick up the tab because M2K only brought $200 with him for a two week-long trip (the money was spent in a day or two). M2K assumed he would be able to money match people in Japan, but Japan has laws against that sort of thing.
Glad to see items on, if nothing else but to stick to all the nofunallowed.jpg jerks who dislike them.

This doesn't make you look any better than the "jerks" you're talking about.

what its all the features! There is multiple editions, and multiple characters and etc! gotta show off game! Daigo vs Justin Wong rematch!
USF4 also advertises almost singularly to the fighting game community. Smash doesn't.

Items and multiple players per stage are considered big components for a lot of people who play Smash, as Smash is a game that 'anyone' can play. Yes, the tournament itself features a lot of names from the tournament scene, but this is otherwise going to be the most public dedicated venue that Smash 4 is ever likely to be featured in, and it's pretty likely a significant portion of the people watching either on the stream or in the venue itself aren't going to be familiar with professional Smash or Smash 4 itself.

Don't get me wrong, I'd have preferred a more traditional tournament set-up (particularly 1 vs 1 play), especially since I don't think you can have your cake and eat it too with these sorts of things, but suggesting that a full random USF4 tournament with edition select is the same thing as turning items on in Smash is disingenuous.

Can someone explain what the controversy is with EMP to someone who doesn't know what EMP is?

That's not really what they were talking about I think. M2k is just known for being a little....blunt and Mang0 is Mang0.

As for the controversy with EMP, it's Triforce - the "ceo".

This is so hype. I don't even care the ruleset is like that. It gives everyone a look at the various forms of gameplay. Really hyped.

Oh wow. Had no idea that was the case.

Lack of Mew2King, Mang0 and Armada makes me sad. I honestly didn't even know most of these people. Can the fans please Mew2King into the tournament?

They are saving M2K for a special match called "The Robot vs The Director" before grand finals
right?

I love how they generate hype for their Smash Bros tournament, but as a non smash fan I would like them to hype the E3 Digital Event more.
All good things come for those who wait. They're pimping out Smash because it's their second big release this year, and are trying to save some surprises for their actual event (its also why they skipped out on an April update direct for a smash related one)

can hungrybox even play a character besides jiggly?
The whole "hungrybox can only play puff" thing is exaggerated; he just chose to play Jigglypuff because of the lower execution requirements. He's gotten better at execution since then.

It also doesn't matter much in a new game without wave dashing or L-canceling.

This is only helpful to people who actually know who Mang0 is.

Some of us are still outsiders looking in as far as the competitive scene goes.

Drunk Mang0 is the only way to make his inclusion fair.

I don't understand the issue with Mango either.

Turning on items for everything before grand finals is a bummer but I understand why they did it. I do wish they did like an items on and items off tourney, with maybe the items off tourney allowing players to choose the same character if they want instead of this weirdly gimmicky Fan Favorite tourney (however it does sound like it'd be a blast to people actually going in person).

Would it be safe to assume at this point that there will be no new items from this point forward? Everything will have either already been announced, or be from a previous game.

Super hype for this. I understand they want to show off their game to everyone. I will fan vote Amsa all day.

Expecting Marth and Fox to do well.

Imagine how mad people are gonna get when somebody breezes through the preliminaries because it turns out that one Final Smash is totally unbalanced.

hardly anyone will get mad in the scene, as nobody keeps final smashes on in tournaments (it's an item, not a move).
well, maybe some randoms will get angry though :D

Oh well. Four player matches mean that there's little excuse to not stream all the matches and get more character info before the game comes out. Then there will be the players giving rundowns of their experience. Overall, I think the ruleset is a decent compromise.

Can I point out just how SCARY ACCURATE that leaked list was?

http://pastebin.com/NFF4f2J6

Only two people and one announcer are not on that leaked roster. PC Chris and Wizzrobe were swapped out for Hungrybox and aMSa, and Scar seems to have been added as a commentator for the final list.

Could the leak have been some earlier version?

Amsa and HBox? GCN adapter and special controller? I don't even care about the ruleset, all of this sounds amazing.

I'm gonna spend so much money on Smash this year.
