Does Alan Wake ever change up?

I got the game on steam at release day but still haven't finished it; basically, I find it dull despite really loving the setup, setting and mistery, but the whole shooting parts, which are the actual game, are freakin boring. So, does it ever change up?

Only Alice: Madness Returns is more repetitive. Unlike that game though, Alan Wake isn't 25 hours long so I still enjoyed it.

The dlc has some more interesting combat scenarios though.

Not really, towards the end it gets a little freakier/entertaining but your still essentially doing the same thing. It really only starts to change in the DLC episodes, which are great.

Not really, I mean you get a few new weapons but the combat still plays mostly the same. If you're that interested in the story play on easy. I found myself forcing through the gameplay segments and wishing they were done so I could get on and finish the story.

if you make it past chapter 3, continue playing. it get's better and faster.

if you can't stand the utter boredom and monotony of chapter 3, quit there and never look back,

Short Answer, No.

It was the only bad aspect of the game. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, the setting, the writing, everything about the game, with the one exception. The terrible and repetitive combat.

I hear American Nightmare changes it up a bit, but not much.

god i loved the twin peaks meets stephen king vibes of this game. probably one of the best narratives/presentation last gen.

but yeah that gameplay is just dull as hell

That's now how you're supposed to play the game..
You miss the best part of it besides the story.

Play on hard, try not to die. That's the real fun of the game.

There's way too much padding, and I love the game, but it's hard to deny it. The game really picks up after the padding though......I think that's the forest in Chapter 3? I can't remember for sure. But I remember there was one definite place that was a real slog but then it just kept getting better.

Persist. :)

Yeah. Those moments in the cabins and the similar areas at night, high on a mountain, overlooking the lake were some of the most atmospheric and well presented areas. Totally agree with you on the Twin Peaks / Stephen King vibe.

No, it stays extremely repetitive. This is why I really question Remedy's cinematic ambitions. The entire game is pretty much the same few encounters...even the same method of ENCOUNTERING the encounters. You walk forward, the camera pans out to show the dark silhouettes, they attack you in the same exact patterns, you dodge, you do the same thing.

There are a few mix-up encounters in the late game but it is by far the most repetitive game I ever finished. It is fairly long, too.

It's like ASSET REUSE the game facilitated by the fact that everything is dark. Dark Forest Path becomes Dark Mountain Road becomes Dark Open Field. Over and over and over again and ALAN RUNS SO DAMN SLOWLY

I came in to type this.

You do get to drive cars eventually, and a couple of sequences strewn throughout the game serve to break up the monotony. American Nightmare really sets about polishing the engine, and offers many more weapons, but it's also even more combat focused.

Nope, it doesn't change up. I still enjoyed it, and found it to have the best forest in a game until Tomb Raider came back.

Started playing this game about 2 years ago, but I kinda drifted away from it due to the repetitive combat. I liked the setting, so I am planning to eventually get back to it.

Great story and atmosphere marred by the same combat scenario regurgitated 100s of times throughout. The DLC goes totally macro with that setup, too.

Nope, it's why I ended up disliking the game. They keep throwing you back in the woods for more combat sections thoughtout the game. And for me the combat never got any better. It was actually interesting when I first tried it but it becomes incredible repetitive.

Setting and atmosphere are still good, though I thought the story felt like a bad Stephan King rip off, which they liked to remind you of by continually dropping his name. IMO if you have played the game for a few hours you've seen its best aspects and I wouldn't say it's worth continuing.

I thought the writing was pretty cringe worthy most of the time, and the combat quickly gets repetitive, but I still really enjoy the setting and premise of the game.

Nope. It's pretty terrible with that. One of the most repetitive games I've ever played.

Don't understand the love for it at all.

This is one of those hyped up games that just didn't live up to it, for me. For exactly what you mentioned, it's such a chore to play, didn't finish it.

Having played it on hard, I can say that was not fun at all.

Well, seems like I'm just a bit too much of a fan and trying to talk it better than it is.
But the story alone is worth the game!
And this "always throwing back into the woods" just made me more excited as I wanted to find out where he lands next.

Didn't get any of the DLCs tho (there are 2, right?)
Are they the same as the main game? How many chapters/how long do they take?
Storywise, as good as the main game, better or worse?

I pride myself on finishing every game I start playing, even the one's I'm not terribly into. I couldn't finish this one. Just got bored.

I thought it overall was a pretty bad game, besiders graphics. Wake was annoying, the gameplay was dull, the story a mess. Atmosphere never really catched me either. Waste of time and money.

Alas it doesn't.
I really liked the atmosphere and story but the shooting was just awfully repetitive and boring.
Towards the end my reaction was "oh no, not another fight!". The whole situation is quite absurd because Remedy proved in Max Payne 1+2 that they can actually create a very fun shooting experience. :(

I didn't really like it either. I didn't find it scary, boring combat and boring enemies. The location was the best part of the game.

This is why I really question Remedy's cinematic ambitions.

I don't care how many teasers Remedy will throw at us until Quantum Break gets released but I am not falling for it, I am not getting hyped for it until I see a susbtantial list of glowing reviews and a huge OT thread of happiness of joy here in Neogaf.

Nope, but play on to see how dumb a videogame can truly get. It's like they just stopped giving a shit while making the game.

I bought the game on Steam and was really hyped by the good press it had. Then I played the game and got totally turned off by the shooting gameplay. Uncharted gets shafted for that but Alan Wake is worse in every way possible. And that's a shame because the premises of the game are really interesting. I left after I got super annoyed by a fight quite early in the game (well, I pretty much rage quit...) with the intention to come back later. I never did and most probably never will as I totally lost interest in the game. A shame really.

I used an ammo trainer for the whole game and the expansion. Takes the boredom/stress out of the repetitive encounters, speeds up the flow and you can still take in the environmental atmosphere and story.

YES I played Alan Wake with an ammo trainer. No regrets.

Nope.

The combat is pretty repetitive, but I found the atmosphere, story, night springs missions and the manuscripts helped to make it less of an issue.

The DLCs are much better in terms of variety, if you can soldier through the main game, I definitely recommend checking them both out. Oh and American Nightmare is pretty fantastic too.

At least they had the "Atari forced us to release the game in this state" excuse. Can't really say the same for Remedy hehe

I think Remedy just wanted the game out of the door and I expect MS weren't too happy with how long it was taking either.

Let's not forget the game was in development for five years...

Yea. It's why I don't expect quantum break out for a good while. They took forever for Max Payne, they took forever for Alan wake. They aren't a speedy dev team.

Yeah MS must really like Remedy, not many Companies would put up with that. Plus they don't own them, and it didn't sell that well.

The game is amazing tho, I beat it at least 4 to 5 times

This makes me feel better about stopping playing it. Was only a couple of hours in and I just did not feel like doing the same thing over and over. I'll just watch the cutscenes on YouTube or something.
