Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 8: Put mii in, coach

Hey, Brawl in the Family updated earlier than usual!

"He's going to be disappointed when the power-up wears off and all he'll have is a beautiful woman."

Ahh shifting stages, my favorite kind of stage. A great update and the base stage looks so awesome with a shoutout to Kamek as a cherry on top.

fuck Final Destination

what's so hard about just having a "turn off stage hazards" option, the game has literally EVERY OTHER VARIABLE covered in the match settings

At the very least, it'd be nice to turn off bosses. For instance, Wily's Castle looks like a really fun stage, but I don't want to have to think about the Yellow Devil every time I play it.

Didn't Sakurai say somewhere they went off Brawl's wifi records and found most people played with items off in final destination?

Not to defend For-Glory's set up, but I can accept rather than the developers simply taking that meme at face-value they were trying to work off off what the trend was online last time. They probably should've also taken into account how limited Brawl's online offerings were last time though.

Pic of the day. Here's a new Wii U stage, Mushroom Kingdom U! It brings to life the worlds of New Super Mario Bros. U.

When Kamek casts a spell, the stage transforms drastically! That said, this is not what you would call a moving stage…
…By the way, this stage will be playable in the demo version of the game for E3, a game expo that starts on June 10 in Los Angeles.
Dang. My avatar bet was just one update too soon. XD

Hmm.....This map makes me want to get NSMBWU as my free game from MK8 rather than pikmin. Whats the call guys?

I really like both, but Pikmin 3 is the better game. One of the Wii U's best. Unless you're particularly big on NSMB, I wouldn't recommend it over Pikmin. You should still play both, though!

Oh man, Mushroom Kingdom U looks sick. New Super Mario Bros. U had a great look to it -- really glad they're dedicating a Mario stage to that game. About time we had a new Wii U stage! Can't wait to demo the stage at E3 next week.

Still no new Kirby or Star Fox stage, though... curious.

Speaking of which, do you think it's possible that the Blue Bomber will have a stage for SSB3DS, that takes place in one of the many Wily Stations in the GameBoy Mega Man games.

That would be awesome! My vote would be for the Wily Marine Base from Mega Man III for the epic music alone.

That is really sick. Super looking forward to this stage <3

I agree with Hot Coldman. Battlefield variation would be a better option because BF > FD. I mean for one, the former begins with a B which automatically makes it better.

Even a simple 'no boss' option would make a lot of those regular stages competitively viable without having an FD-make over. Since it's still six months away, there's a tiny bit of hope Sakurai's able to get some feedback from tourney players about the game, and For Glory mode's botched execution should be at the top of the list.

i hope they include non stage hazard versions of each stage too.

so far, outside of BF and FD and all it's variants no stage really looks good for 1v1.

Wow, that map style is a lot better than the actual style in NSMBU. Not vastly different, but improved in the right spaces.
To me the big difference is all the elements on-screen are in 3D, so everything mesh's together nicely. Every NSMB always looks slightly 'off' to me by default since you have these 3D models interacting with pre-rendered 2D sprites. Same issue I had with Episode 1 of Sonic 4.

Apparently because reasons. I don't get it either.
Well, I mean, consulting the opinions of actual tourney players about a mode that is apparently targeted towards them seems like a pretty good idea to me. Not sure I'd trust them to balance characters or anything, but I wouldn't mind seeing someone change Sakurai's mind on the diversity of For Glory mode.

What does "more viable" mean? Why is it always a "they're taking our game" thing? It's just more options. The entire argument is "I would like to see them add this one more thing on top of the existing game".

Well I see BF as stage with platforms and no hazards which is what most stages would be if you turned hazards off.

Nope. Not true. Moving platforms, number of platforms, size of the stage, size of the platforms, transformations - all these things and more have been welcomed into competitive Smash, and play a huge part in determining match-ups.

The difference between, say, Battlefield and Fountain of Dreams is very much real!

There's still a ton of moving and transforming stages revealed that would still have dynamically changing platforms and fighting areas with hazards turned off.

... Like the stage that was just revealed a few hours ago.

Well it is just I've never seen someone suggest that Sakurai talks to a range of Smash players. It always seems to only be the suggestion of talking to tournament players is thrown around. I even remember getting in a debate on this forum because I committed the heinous crime of suggesting that a good development team for this game would consist of players of all skill sets rather than just one.

Wow. Talk about picky. I'm just saying if flat platform stages are called FD variations than stages which keep the platforms can be called BF variations.

Ah, we're on the same level then. I totally agree that all players of all preferences and skill levels should be considered and feedback sought from.

The reason you see a lot people suggest Sakurai talk more to tournament players is because the general feeling is that he doesn't talk to them at all, mind. It's not "he should consider these people first and foremost", it's just an underlying feeling that competitive Smash isn't a pool from which he is pulling opinions from. Obviously this looks more like people pushing competitively-minded players' opinions ahead of anyone else on the surface, but it's a push for equal (hell, any) representation, I believe. No-one's out there saying "he should listen to us items only free-for-all have-some-beers-and-go-nuts crowd!" because none of those people feel like they aren't being considered.

I think even the likes of Mew2King are fully aware of how niche competitive Smash is amongst the millions and millions of people who enjoy the series, even in this platinum eSports age of Smash. So no-one's trying to say who should be heard over anyone else.

Why are tourney player opinions considered more viable than say ours?

They're not. I think tourney players are the only ones who really think they are or should be, and even then only a subset of them likely actually feel that way.

Thankfully Sakurai doesn't seem to think that. He gave that crowd options to be sure, with FD variations and such, but many of the stages revealed so far in both versions are moving, have gimmicks, hazards, etc. - basically anything that would get them "banned" in tournaments.

Fortunately, it seems like the majority of the stages revealed so far are focused on fun and definitely the type that would be "banned" in tournament play. I don't mind the tourney crowd having a few more options as long as the entire game isn't tailored to their style of play, and it isn't.

Generally, the "competitive" players understand the game's mechanics and engine a bit more. The casual player in generally won't care if they put patch notes that say "we decreased the hitstun of forward air" but they might feel something is "off" and just don't understand the specifics on why. I know a lot of my friends who don't take the games seriously definitely felt the "slowness" and "floatiness" of Brawl but didn't understand why that was so. They still enjoyed it but it's not like they wouldn't have not enjoyed it if it had something closer to 64 or Melee's physics. That's why people are advocating for more input from the competitive player since they can give more insight to mechanics/engine/balance rather than "ADD _____ stage and _____ character".

Why not make a zany game with tons of items and cool stages, but at the same time, still have a game that has strong mechanics and competitive depth? That's what competitive players want.

I'm speaking as a player who still plays both "For Glory" and "For Fun" in Smash. :P Like Project M is great! Whether I'm doing tourney-style matches or just doing free for alls with the modded movesets/music/stages/etc. :P

On the subject of stage hazards, just from a more noncompetitive standpoint, I've always found the stages less focused on hazards to be more fun. Sure, some minimal stage hazards are cool, like the tornado in Hyrule 64, the dynamic Pokemon Stadium stages, or the spinning blocks in Yoshi's Island (Melee). But any of the moving stages, the retro stages in Brawl, or WarioWare are just awful to play on IMO. They're just not fun stages. For this reason I don't really mind Project M's focus on more competitive stages, though I can see why some people could be frustrated with the lack of more gimmick-focused ones there.

Having an FD version for all stages isn't really the best solution, IMO, given that lack of platforms gives some characters an advantage. However, thus far there seem to be enough non-gimmick focused stages shown for this game though. And the more gimmick focused ones seem to be pretty neat.

My new favourite stage on Wii U, together with Galaxy and the Pikmin one.

So far, Smash U has FD, Battlefield, Skyloft, Kalos League, City & Town, Pilotwings and maaaaybe WIndy Hill that look fairly "legal". Maybe Halberd and Garden of Hope as counterpicks. So it's not a bad lot, plus all the different FDs will have their minute differences. Still leaves out Wii Fit Studio, Mario Galaxy, Pyrosphere, Palutena's Temple, Boxing Ring and Wily's Castle, though. And Mushroom Kingdom U now as well!

Eh, Melee only has like 6 legal stages, we'll live.

Only thing that bums me out is that Pyrosphere and Wily's Castle seem like they'd be really solid competitive stages if you could toggle bosses off.
