iOS8 allows third-party OS/software keyboards, just announced at WWDC.

The visual example was something that looked like Swype.

They emphasized that there are security and privacy restrictions by default, so the keyboard will have no network capabilities unless authorized by the user.

Welcome to the new age, Apple. A reactionary decision seeing Android soar as high as it has, no doubt. I wonder how tight their overall restrictions are going to be now.

I was really happy to see this during the conference. Swype has been the main thing I keep buying android for a while now, so I'm definitely considering buying an iPhone this fall now with it on IOS.

This is literally the last thing I wanted before switching from an Android phone. It took them long enough but Apple delivered.

It didn't look like Swype, it WAS Swype...the picture said "Swype"

No network access worries me. I want to know if I can take the data from my Android install of Swiftkey and have that come over to the iOS version of Swiftkey.

oh great, one of the things i hate about android and i love about ios is creeping over

Custom keyboards are like aids. Once into an ecosystem, they crap all over everything.

Oh thank god. The iOS keyboard is unusable, like literally, all you people typing on it have actually fabricated your own shared conscious reality.

This is really cool, and like others have said, hopefully Apple will continue with the trend. Allowing defaults apps to be changed would be ace.

See the picture above your post.

Finally. I'll finally be able to consider iOS for my next phone. Their keyboard (and most other platforms defaults, save BB10) are atrocious for people switching languages constantly.

SwiftKey is probably one of the best apps I have ever used on my phone, so no. This post is factually incorrect.

One of my biggest issues with iOS addressed. I can finally feel comfortable moving back when the iPhone 6 is released.

Swype style keyboards are stupid gimmicky things that aren't as good as a 'proper' keyboard.

Is what I thought before I tried one properly. And now I find it hard to go back. It is unbelievably faster than normal typing. When I'm typing a lot on iPad it now feels a bit frustrating compared to my phone.

Not sure exactly how they'll bring this to ipad - the larger size may not be ideal for swiping, but maybe they can just give you a smaller area to swipe in.

I never cared and never will, cool for the ones who wanted it i suppose.
I just hope they don't break the os like they do elsewhere.

SHOCKING NEWS! iOS now nearly as functional as Ice Cream Sandwich.

If you keep on "innovating" like this, Apple, you may be on par with Jellybean in a couple of years!

Not a biggie for me as I've always liked the default Apple keyboard better compared to Swiftkey or Swype on my HTC One. But hopefully this will bring in a wealth of new keyboard themes and changes in typography for iOS.

The Apple keyboard was the one major problem iOS had over Android for me. Now that is gone, and I am happy. Swype keyboards are a necessity.
