SHOCKING NEWS! iOS now nearly as functional as Ice Cream Sandwich.

If you keep on "innovating" like this, Apple, you may be on par with Jellybean in a couple of years!
Serious question. Has android figures out how to scroll smoothly without slowdown yet?

When apple let's you choose default browsers and map/navigation apps, that's when I'd maybe consider getting an apple phone. My issue will still be that the price to value ratio will still be shit because there will be phones like the Moto X and OnePlus

Ok cool sounds like iPhone sucks.

iPhones are fucking expensive, though. I'm rethinking my decision to buy one in the future because I'm not sure if it's actually worth the price, unlike Macbooks.

So what phone do you have? Did you buy a subsidized phone with a 2 year contract or did you buy it outright?

Did you know if you own an iPhone and upgrade on a 2 year cycle you can trade in your old one for $200, making your new iPhone essentially free if you re-up your plan?

So in what context is it expensive compared to other phones besides the Nexus on an off contract basis?

About time, and good that they have introduced features missing from iOS for far too long. I must say the implementation of some things, such as actionable notifications, look better than the android counterparts so good job Apple. I really hope this drives Google to improve Android further.

This is BS, I'm sorry but it is. Scrolling is very smooth now, what phones were they using?

I just hope Apple don't kick third party keyboards out of being "too similar" to theirs. I would actually quite like the iOS7 keyboard with a few minor tweaks.

IMO this is good and bad. Good because yay choices. Bad because in my whatsapp group "fucking swiftkey / swype" is the most common post.

I imagine Swype-like keyboards will work really with the iPhone 5 and it's width. It'll probably work better with the 5 than with the next, larger, wider iPhone that they introduce.

I've used Swype before on my Nexus but now that the default keyboard does swype texting I just pretty much use that. It's actually a lifesaver when you're carrying stuff in both hands and want to text.

Android devs: "We´re going for a more cinematic scrolling experience", no 60fps confirmed

Nope. People at work have these high end android phones and they can't scroll smoothly at all.

I have a Nexus 7 tablet and the Moto G (the budget model) and both scroll fine without any problems (both KitKat without any sort of mods). I also use an iPad 4 daily and don´t notice any difference, so it´s not a "getting used to shitty performance" effect going on either.

But I´m sure "those people" "at work" with "these high-end phones" are a more reliable source. Maybe that was a problem a year ago, but Android has been catching up - you can tell by Apple reacting with features like this one. Which, in the end, is great news for consumers. Tim Cook seems to know what´s up.

Samsung Galaxy S4

I bought it outright

I don't have such a plan

I thought buying the Galaxy S4 off contract also tended to be rather expensive. I could see it when considering the Nexus line or new Moto, but the Galaxies not so much.

I have a Nexus 7 (2013), iPad Air and iPhone 5s and there is a difference, especially when talking about overall use (browsing, OS and apps), but it's nowhere near as substantial as it used to be. But it's there.

It is kind of funny how quickly the roles changed and Apple has been playing catch up for a while now...

One of the reasons I've chose Android over iOS was the liberty to have things my way instead of a default. So it is actually a good thing Apple is getting more relaxed and allowing 3rd party keyboards and apps to speak with each other. Took them long enough.

Happy with this. The default one was god awful and one of the things that made me switch to Android, although the default one now looks like Swift Key, which is nice.

Now make a phone as big as the Galaxy S4 with the same PPI and I am back in your "ecosystem", Apple.

Well, now we know why the lawsuits between Google and Apple were dropped.

IOS 8 would have probably been a legal nightmare.

You should probably define what phones you're talking about, because this is otherwise so vague as to be completely fucking useless.

It was an issue on my old GS3, but scrolling has been smooth on my LG G2. Can't speak for other phones.

Not really surprising. Google has been the more innovative company for the last few years. Google is not afraid to release new stuff that is not profitable or may fail miserably. Meanwhile Apple is still relying on iSomething. For all the cash they have hoarded you would expect Apple to innovate.

I have to say Apple stuff aged much better though. My iPad 2 is still working rather smoothly and it is a very nice device. I have to choose between a Samsung Galaxy S5 and IPhone 5S soon, I prefer how Google service (especially Google Now) > Apple service, but the S5 just look.... so ugly!

Have you been living under a rock for the past few years or have you just completely ignored everything they've announced? Just to give an example of innovation: 2014 Mac Pro.

Now the biggest problem is iOS 8 features try to streamline the connection more between phone and computer (Apple to Apple) whereas people want it to be open to everyone else. The new sharing features (music, video, app sharing) is innovation. SMS/MMS on your Mac incorporated with iMessage is innovation. Answering your goddamn phone call on your Mac is innovation.

Pretty much. As someone who may go back to the iPhone but has 0 desire to get a Mac, iOS 8 was pretty lacklustre other than the subject of this thread. But I'm sure some more features will be unlocked via whatever hardware they shove into the next iPhone/iPads.

I don't see Mac Pro is that innovative - it is certainly well engineered. It is still a computer and you still use it the same way as before. Not user if Mac user mind losing internal expansion room. If you really want to say something innovative about Mac I think the "move frequently use application to SSD feature" is a much better example, even if it works similarly to Intel SRT.

It is like the original iPhone (especially with the AppStore) was innovative, but afterwards it is just mostly iterative updates except the fingerprint sensor.

How is this innovative? This to me sounds like utilities finally put in to connect their devices together. This isn't a standard that will be used amongst other companies. So what the heck is so innovative about it? For as long as the Mac and iPhone has been out, why hasn't Apple allowed this from the beginning of time. The world innovative is being used waay too loosely when it comes to Apple tbh.

If anything, the only innovative thing they shown that entire conference is the Mac being able to host a Hotspot feature. That is huge and definitely something that will become a standard. Google already has Sms via Hangouts built into the chromebooks and you could make phone calls from your Gmail for free with the contract from your phone. I'm sure Microsoft offers something similar with Windows 8.

Innovation simply means new, no reason to get upset because we aren't worshiping innovation in the way you prescribe.

These features will be useful to people and that's all that matters.

You are right. It is the only thing that matters, the doesn't mean that it is something that hasn't been done or tried before. As was said, this is very much for Apple users. I hate that it sounds like I'm trying to downplay the features, which I do think is very neat Btw. But It just seems lately that anything they do is often seen as “innovative “ despite it being elsewhere. It's good for Apple users and that's that. Just like it has been good for Android users and the like. However I don't agree with rubbing it in the face of Apple users who get to have these features now.

It's always entertaining how a simple thread about a new feature for either iOS or Android makes certain people turn into huge trolls. Calm the fuck down, people. They're phones.

Haha is there really any point in getting mad that iOS got a new feature that Android phones already have? Not even Apple called it innovative.

And I wouldn't call this playing catch-up. When iOS lacks a feature, it's most likely because designer deliberately chose not to include it. When Android/WP lacks a feature, it's probably because of time constraints.

Apple has the power the create the most complete OS (or maybe had). The only thing holding them back is their extreme "walled-garden" approach.

Seriously. There's definitely things I like better about Android over iOS personally (I love the ease of file transfer on Android with drag and drop over USB), but it feels like the reason to get one or the other has definitely shrunk over time.

It'll definitely be great to get Swiftkey on my iPad Mini though!
