Mario Maker Rumor Discussion Thread

My evaluation of the rumour:
+ It's totally plausible that something like this could leak from the E3 show floor
+ The would-be source of the photo isn't someone claiming to have secret insider info, they're someone claiming to have seen something they weren't supposed to have yet.
+ The banner, name, and concept do not seem like the typical kind of invented fan nonsense; it's not Zelda: Curse of the Crushed Bone Skull Warrior or whatever.
+ The idea easily interacts with NFC, and fits well with the idea that Nintendo is having a roundtable about a game they're announcing
+ It sort of follows up the NES Remix and I guess reflects a kind of direction Nintendo's been poking at recently
+ McWhertor is presumably saying he has confidence because he knows this is in fact real, but it's not clear how he knows, because if it was from some sort of long-lead pre-E3 event, he'd presumably be NDA'd and commenting on this would probably not be ideal

- It is clear to me that the original site just ran whatever got sent to them, and did absolutely no due diligence in checking the source or asking for followup
- The photo is low quality as hell, which is a classic hallmark of fake stuff
- The other banner images, eg Pikachu, look a bit like stock art and not as much like banner art.

Yes, New Super Mario Bros Wii. Someone posted photos of Nintendo's section of E3, all under thick drapes, but the shape of the shadows visible under the drapes was unmistakable and people (I'm pretty sure our very own Crushed/EmCeeGramr) identified it.

I hope this isn't just a bare bones Mario level editor with no online stuff, or anything fancy to make it truly special. But knowing Nintendo it might be... I hope we at least get sharing functionality cause that's a no brainier. It would be cool to have competitions (Like that challenge mode the guy on the last page talked about), online play, and a bunch of different downloadable packs of pieces you can use or something.

Don't those banners typically utilize stock art?

I think it's pretty sensical for Nintendo to use the Smash Models on the banners...they're detailed, and get across the idea that it's Nintendo's booth.

If it's real, then this seems like one of those Wii U games that will show off the controller. It's pretty cool that this concept is presumably tied to the classic Mario sprites and not the vile New Super Mario Bros. aesthetic, but I find it difficult to care about these games centered around user-generated content. My distaste may stem from the fact that these sorts of games usually play like crap, so maybe I'll actually like this. Nintendo isn't going to fuck up Mario's jump.

What are the chances they'd include a sprite editor like WarioWare D.I.Y. had? You know, create a custom player sprite or an enemy.

if this is real Miiverse sharing seems like a no brainer

I hope this is real.

Nintendo could make big bucks by selling tools for making and sharing clones of their classic games via Miiverse. Think not just 'Mario Maker', but 'Zelda Maker' or 'Metroid Maker', where you can put together your own versions of the NES games. Those things would sell.

I think there's a good chance this is legit. Like someone said earlier, it's a bit too out of left field and boring (when compared to the usual fake leaks like Zelda and Metroid Prime 4 stuff). I don't think this will be the focus of that 90 minute briefing though.

If this is real and it does well, I can see it becoming a regular series. Nintendo could do it with nearly all their major series with games on the NES/SNES. Mario Maker, Zelda Maker, Metroid Maker, etc.

Whilst this looks really cool in its own right, this won't touch LittleBigPlanet if they don't bring the same calibre of customization and tools. You can make original Mario in LittleBigPlanet if you have the patience/smarts. along with millions of other complex things.

Can you do things like, e.g., design your own visual schemes from scratch? Create new kinds of enemies? Power ups? Obstacles? Story?

If this is just a tile/enemy placer... then it's kinda boring. I look forward to seeing the better fan hacks get remade and spread to the general public, but eh, what keeps LittleBigPlanet interesting is that even though you get a lot of badly designed levels (which this surely will) at least the range is broad enough that you get surprises each time. Not sure if the idea of playing sub-standard mario levels is that attractive, even though the physics will be Mario, that won't be enough. I hope we get something better than that.

Interesting, I feel thos may be big if they do it properly. Also crazy idea, what if they they release new nfc figures with the snes mario or n64 mario that will update it to does game worlds. So you can link from Ocarina of Time on mario 64 mushroom kingdom.

Why they've never made a another Mario Paint is beyond me, especially with the tablet. Loved the fly swatting game and the music maker.

Font reminds me of Mario Paint:

I'll go with 1/2 Mario Paint 1/2 Mario Level Editor.

The plot thickens

I'm just speculating on the game, much like most of the people in this thread. All signs point to it being some level maker + sharing game. I just find the idea of making levels and sharing them to be boring. I didn't like it in Little Big Planet and I didn't like it in Modnation racers (or the multiple other games that have the concept). I just don't know why you felt the need to be passive aggressive and demand I "enlighten" you by detailing the game (one which may or may not even exist). I'm just speculating in a rumor discussion thread.

If true, please don't have this be a "big reveal" sort of game. This looks like one of those games you give a minute to then move on. This is NES Remix levels of uninteresting. :(

I said, we don't know what the game is. The existence is a rumor, what it is, is your assumption. Your assumption is, it is uninteresting. I say it is too early for such conclusions, esp when we have nothing but a single blurry pic. That is a discussion. And it seems like we disagree.

Then they would easily kill off their New Super Mario Bros lines of games. ;)

That's why I suspect they'd keep it limited to the original NES assets (with maybe some way to create new ones within the same limitations). You'd still have to go to Nintendo if you wanted to play a Mario game with newer graphics (or if you wanted competently created levels... :) )

My thoughts -

It's fake because :
- Nintendo booths are notoriously under-wraps. Covered with white sheets, kept secret until opening. We don't get leaks like this about them.
- The placement of the ad seems odd. The image shows a series of Smash Bros characters, then - BANG - Mario Maker.
- It's the week before E3, and photoshop exists. I still don't believe Project Beast exists for the same reason (joke)

It's real because :
- The idea seems very in touch with Nintendo's thinking right now. It's the realization of an idea that people have wanted for awhile, and wrings that sweet NES nostalgia for another couple dollars.
- It's way too mundane and realistic of a game for somebody to fake with this level of attention to detail.
- I want to belieeeeeeve

It's certainly a great idea and would make good use of the GamePad, but we'll see if it's real or not. I honestly think that something like this should have existed for a long time on the Wii or DS since it's such an obviously brilliant idea.

It makes more sense to release it with the gamepad and miiverse, than on the Wii. Do it right the first time.

Mario maker would be fucking badass. Even though yes it's yet another thing with Mario in it (dear god Nintendo, stop), this is one thing they actually need to do with the brand. It's perfect.

If real, my bet would be that it's an eShop title that'll be released "at the end of this [Nintendo Direct, Digital Event, etc.] presentation", whichever system it's on.

Personally, I think it's real. EmCeeGramr put the reasons why pretty well.

This is a great idea (although a very obvious as well) and I always sink a lot of time in level creators like this. My only concern is that Nintendo is usually conservative with content creators like this, so I expect it to have a lot of silly limitations and never quite reach all the potential it has. I hope I'm wrong though.

If it's real but only uses Super Mario assets then *yawn*

If it's real and uses assets from Mario 1, 2, 3 and World then *wahoooooo*

Yes, it is an assumption. I never claimed to know hard facts on this game at all, just speculated on what the might game be (and found said speculation unappealing). Am I supposed to just not speculate on games in rumor threads? Like say, everyone else in this thread? Not sure why you're picking on me specifically. I kind of feel like you're just pointing out me because I don't like what I see. If I said that I love the game or it's going to be great (or speculate on what the game might be in a more positive light), I'm going to guess and say you would have ignored me like you have the rest of the people in the thread. Whatever, let's agree to disagree.

Any news on this coming to NA? I love Art Academy.

I feel like Nintendo's a little late to the 8-bit Mario level creator scene.

... which probably makes this true.

Well, they were going to do an 8-bit Donkey Kong level creator on Gamecube originally. This isn't really new ground for them either.

Could be neat. Maybe f2p with NFP interaction to get new parts to work with. Also Nintendo created content thats paid.

And this is what the 90 minute session was for. Thank god, I wouldn't want any classic metroidvania anyway. God I can't even write a sarcastic prediction without thinking it might actually be true.

I think I found possible evidence to call it a fake. Has Nintendo EVER re-used hands in thier promo arts or renders? Because...

Did some cut-outs and over-layed it. Not only does it look identical, but the hand seems to be the EXACT size of the one on this google image-found image I found by searching "nintendo land balloon trip breeze"

NSMBU / Luigi thing covers. But it made sense there. The hand is indeed too much.

Why wouldn't they use the same hand? Wouldn't you?
I've never seen them use a render of this kind twice for totally different operations though> if it is real, it's a Wii U game. If it isn't, then it doesn't matter.

But the most curious thing is that it seems to be pixel-for-pixel the same size, wether it be on that pic I found, or the "leaked pic". If we can get someone who's better at photoshop than me to compare and overlay the two, that would be great, but I think the coincidence in size is way too strong.

Finally, detective GAF begins to arrive. Now it gets interesting.

Add this, to this:

This is me being stupidly picky and weird, but normally a poster doesn't jut out like that... it's more a sign of photoshopping.

edit: and I realise it could be due to low picture quality.

Fake.

The fact that it is literally the same size as the Google image suggests a fake IMO. Either that or it is some ungodly coincidence that the photo ended up the same size.

I'm saying true. WiiU and 3ds crossover.

$20 digital title.

Releases Q3

Maybe even some Miiverse functionality and/or stamp sharing included.
