Mario Maker Rumor Discussion Thread

if it's coming as part of some sort of nfc deal, you think they might use those figures in the art, especially when there's so much space not being used. promoting an eshop game with so much art work also seems really unlikely, but they also devoted a lot of e32012 floorspace to the google panorama view thing.
Hmm, I guess it would depend on when they expect to actually release this NFC stuff and whether they have promotional images ready. But then there's already that Mario figurine image being used in investor relations slides.

Seeing those past E3 images does make one look at this image and think fake though, but then maybe with some better lighting and once it's fully assembled it will look less underwhelming.

It does beg the question, if fake, what is McWhertor on about in the OP tweet - trolling?

Could be the NFC game or the one to use the figures mentioned before. Or something like Scribblenauts or a mix of all above. XD

Oh wow I just realized how huge those ad things are. And they would take almost half of one just for regular blocks?

exactly. those blocks end probably 7 feet off the ground. it's a real waste of space and an unusual one when the smash bros. fighters take only that top segment anyway.

a fairly unlikely, but possible scenario could be that the game is real, but the art work is not. i get the feeling nintendo keeps most things under a tight lid, so if some guy from polygon is aware of this being a thing, perhaps someone else does too... especially if more than just video game people (like toy companies) are involved. it could even be that the concept/idea is real, but even the name is made up.

Fake or not, I'd LOVE to play with a Mario level editor -- I've been wanting one for years. Also, I think sticking with just NES-era SMB-style stages is perfect, because they're so simple and straightforward.

I mean, I was really into the idea of Little Big Planet, but that game is almost too deep (for me at least), and requires a big time commitment to make something great. Making Mario levels would be like "tweeting" out a level design -- you get a little inspiration, belt a stage out, and have something satisfying.

Of course, even basic 8-bit levels take a lot of care and consideration to be done well, but along with an unavoidable sea of crap, I think people would make lots of great stuff, too. What'd be REALLY awesome is if, along with demo levels from Miyamoto and co., the game included little tutorial challenges to actually TEACH you the basics of great game design. A game like this could become required playing for all aspiring game designers.

Actual "how to design a good level" tutorials would be great. Especially if it's from a master from Nintendo itself. Would make it worth the money alone.

Anyone else irritated that not just the Maker pic but also the Smash pics are reused? This is E3 and they reuse all art-assets?

I really hope this isn't Nintendo's big game.

I hope you all enjoyed our program this morning, but before you leave, I'd like you to step inside one more world for the Nintendo Wii U.

*BOOM*

*The viewers go wild!*

MARIO MAKER!

Mario as a big announcement isn't unprecedented, something to keep in mind.
Yeah, but this isn't a new Mario. Ιt seems like NES remix to me and if it's indeed the next big title then I expect Nintendo Land levels of disappointment.

At least there's still Zelda.

Actually, to add some fire to the water, I'm a Gamestop manager and there has been an Available SKU in our computers for 3DS for some time now (about a month or so?) priced at 34.99. Not full price, but close enough to paying the Nintendo tax.

Not sure what that means and all, but yeah.

So it's a 3DS SKU? What is it under, Mario Maker or what, or is it just a blank listing?
Erm... yes.
News to me. I had an E3 party that year so I didn't see any online reactions.

Wait, people were disappointed with the Nintendoland reveal?

Yeah.

But then it ended up being a pretty solid game once released. Nintendo seems to do that a lot lately...every game is sort of ho-hum at first showing, but then most of their games end up being really solid. Like 3D World got a bland reception, but ended up being beloved once it came out.

I thought Adam Sessler's head was going to explode on spike tv right after nintendo closed with nintendo land. I felt the same way, just sat there thinking no way they closed with that.

That's definitely how I felt about 3D World... not so sure about Nintendo Land though. That games not fun.

A complete side issue, but one advantage of the Nintendo Direct/Digital Event format is that there's no longer the risk of non-native English speakers getting nervous on stage and rambling for 12 minutes (I don't think it was that long, but it felt like it) about the rules of a game before demonstrating it.

WAIT

Mario Maker Game Jam sounds like a good idea

Shit

Now I want this
Mario's Mushroom Jam, made with fresh mushrooms!
Of course...the conference sucked up until that point, everyone thought we were about to get a megaton, and it was a mini game collection.
The worst was it was shown twice! The beginning and the end of the presentation. All of us were like "but before you go, we got...more nintendoland to show!"

I'm actually more excited for Nintendoland 2 than a new Zelda, for the couch multiplayer aspect. Nothing beats dat Animal Crossing, Mario Chase or Luigi Mansion game.

To each his own I guess....wow.

The reveal trailer showed us the level design direction, real multiplayer confirmed in a 3D Mario and the cat suit mechanics. That's enough information for me to know how the end product will be like. It's like when I tried Wii Sports Resort sword fighting (tech demo) I was picturing the final Ghrahim fight (end result). Hype trailers a la Twilight Princess are more exciting I guess but offer no substance, you're just as clueless of how this Zelda will play before you saw the trailer. You could say I get excited from seeing the potential, but Nintendo always capitalizes on it.

"My name is Shigeru Miyamoto. I created Super Mario. This will explain how we created the levels for Super Mario Bros. Follow along and create Super Mario Bros. with me."

The ultimate level design course based around one of the seminal games in terms of level design from the creator of the franchise himself.

If this was Nintendo's huge game, I don't think they would just put one generic "ad"

Only thing keeping me from saying it's fake - why the heck would you come up with Mario Maker as your fake Nintendo leak? Unless that's what the forger wants us to think?

So conflicted. :/

Oh wow I just realized how huge those ad things are. And they would take almost half of one just for regular blocks?

Yup was about to say that, it looks just wrong, thats too much wasted space and really clashes next to smash bros.

#teamfake.

If this is true, I'd imagine Nintendo might experiment with another new pricing scheme or make it free to play.

Yeah, if it's real I see it as a free-to-play eShop title.

Similar to Steel Diver's pricing model: the base game could come with just some basic building blocks, but you could pay for a full package that consists of a lot more that you could put into your levels. Different enemies, items, structures, etc.

I wouldn't be surprised if its both.

I used "Wii U" there, to respond to the person questioning what Nintendo's big game will be. I think that will be a Wii U game....errr...Zelduh.

It makes me wonder. In an interview for NES remix, it was mentioned the 3ds didnt have the power they were looking for to run it. Do you think this same problem will occur for Mario Maker? Or maybe the Dev was just blowing smoke 'cause they wanted an exclusive Wii U eshop game to help the Wii U out in any way possible?

First thing I thought of when I saw the title was Nintendo resurrecting Marionette pr another of those experimental project Nintendo has been working on over the years. That would have totally made sense if Miyamoto's smaller projects he's talked about wanting to work on was developing some of those same ideas he never got to release as full games.

I mean, a Super Mario Bros. editor seems more obvious but when I think of a top secret Nintendo project, that's were my mind goes first.

I think this really has a ton of potential.

I'd love it if they gave us access to Mario 2, 3, World and All-Stars sprites as well. Allow players to upload stages, vote on the best ones, then let you download them. You can play through them with Mario World physics. Or Toad from Mario 2.

But it'll probably just be Super Mario Bros sprites and have no online connectivity whatsoever.

If it's real, Nintendo should allow the level creator to charge for his stuff if it's really popular. Like a free-to-get-paid system or something.
