Mario Maker Rumor Discussion Thread

I hope this is just a small reveal amongst a bunch of others.

It's cool but more Mario doesn't excite me regardless of the form.

That said, people are always begging for level editors from Nintendo so it's nice that we're getting one.

I hate leaks though.

I agree that it's fake, but Mario level design would be a compelling game for many people, let alone the fact that you could PLAY other people's levels...

Don't misunderstand me, I think it would be fun too, and would totally buy it, even more if you can mix different mario games, and i'd love it to be part of a new "maker" series.
As you say, we could play users's creation, problem is 90% of these would be barely playable and i don't think nintendo wants people to play bad mario levels.

I always wanted a level editor/creator to be introduced in the New Super Mario Bros. series, & this is certainly the closest thing that we'll get. It does make me curious if this is only limited to the original Super Mario Bros, or we will also get Super Mario Bros. USA, Super Mario Bros. 3, or even to create our own levels in Super Mario 64.

Nintendo tends to represent everything Mario in 8-Bit Nes look.

One of this things that made Wario Ware DIY so great is that it actually structured a single player experience around learning to use the tools. In some sense it was just a robust tutorial, but I greatly enjoyed how it presented you with baby steps so you never felt overwhelmed with the tool set. If simply given the tools, I would never have known where to start.

One of the early 'challenges' had you make pixel art for a Dragon Quest style monster. Instead of simply having you draw it, it had you first do the eyes, then the mouth, then the body, and then the game assembled it for you in an interesting way.)

Absolutely! The "babysteps"-style tutorials were brilliant. The game also had the "dojo" where it would give you specific design problems you had to solve, very "programming logic" in their nature. The internal programming engine reminded me a bit of what I´ve tried in Game Maker.

It´s a bit of a shame that everything you could do had to be limited to the typical microgame format. I would have loved to expand it into longer minigames without time limit, like the ones in the other Wario Ware games, like Pyoro or that endless paper airplane one.

It´s going to be interesting if this is just a simple little level editor, or if they go for something bigger in scope, maybe teach some level design principles, how to make balanced and appealing levels that aren´t just EXTREME BRUTAL MARIO KAIZO RAGE!!!.

I mean, making ANY level editor for basic Mario levels isn´t something all that special. I hope (again, if this is actually real) that they aim for something a bit higher and with more polish!

This seems like an obvious enough idea after LBP's success. I wonder how much custom art and such the players will be able to make, as well as how robust the level creation tools are.

That banner really doesn't look real to me. The other kiosks each showcase a Nintendo character (presumably for Smash 3DS) so why would a single kiosk with Mario Maker be sitting next to three Smash kiosks. Furthermore, they wouldn't have separate pictures of Smash Bros. characters without Mario or Link being at the front. I think the original banner is of Mario which makes more sense since it adds fluidity to the kiosk layout. If Mario Maker is real then so be it, but I doubt that's it in the pic.

While the idea intrigues me greatly, I'm not to keen on it if it ends up being an exclusive for Nintendo 3DS. I'll buy it on day one if it comes to Wii U though.

You missed that? There is a thread somewhere... I'll try to find it if someone doesn't beat me to it.

Long and short of it is just that. A new game is going to be announced and that game is going to have a 90 minute presentation JUST about it.

Isn't it more like a developer roundtable? Like what they did with Ocarina of Time 3D?

Hmm, good thought.

I feel like I've already learned a tremendous amount about their 2D Mario level design philosophy from the Iwata Asks feature but it would be really interesting to see something like this implemented.

Related to this, generally speaking, each new 2D Mario game tends to have unique enemies or obstacles in every level. A potential 'Mario Maker' would have to incorporate the ability to make these element and not merely be about placing tiles/sprites.

This seems like an obvious enough idea after LBP's success. I wonder how much custom art and such the players will be able to make, as well as how robust the level creation tools are.
Given the one piece of leaked/faked artwork we are working off of, I think it's a given that there will be pixel art tools. If it were simply a matter of placing pre-existing assets than they probably would have used an art-style more similar to the latest entries in the NSMB series.

(again, I recognize that this is just a rumor but it's fun to speculate)

I think Wii U would make more sense to be honest.
Way easier to create a level on a touchscreen the size of the Wii U's...plus the 3DS has the different aspect ratios between screens making things a little trickier (although I suppose streetpass level trading would be popular in Japan on the 3DS).

Looks great, but I hope this isn't Miyamoto's new IP.
I think it very well could be.

Just look at the Mario Artist series. Miyamoto has repeatedly mentioned the concepts behind these games in Iwata Asks features.

A lot of these elements have already popped up in other games but I think we could definitely see him doing more with this.

If this is real, I don't think it will be a simple level editor. I think it would more likely be more of a Mario Artist / Mario Paint / Warioware DIY at its core, but with the concept structured around ultimately producing Mario content.

Actually, I believe there was a little cheat you could do to get ride of the time-limit that someone discovered.

I really want to play WarioWare D.I.Y. again, but such a shame the online component is forever down and you can't actually share them anymore.

This is exactly my thought as well.

Certainly seems plausible but I lack any faith in Nintendo's competency at this point. My big thing will be to see how "online" this is. It wouldn't surprise me at ALL if this is a full-featured Mario editor that you can share with all your friends locally!

If this has legitimate, straight-forward online functionality with no dumb jank I'll be very impressed.

Where have you been?... Nintendo's online (Mario Kart 8 says "hi!") has been vastly improved.

If it's real, then this seems like one of those Wii U games that will show off the controller. It's pretty cool that this concept is presumably tied to the classic Mario sprites and not the vile New Super Mario Bros. aesthetic, but I find it difficult to care about these games centered around user-generated content. My distaste may stem from the fact that these sorts of games usually play like crap, so maybe I'll actually like this. Nintendo isn't going to fuck up Mario's jump.

This, exactly. When has Nintendo ever dropped the ball on how a game plays, how it feels, especially a 2D platformer? If this is real, the one thing we can trust %100 is that it will play well.

Now, a lot of people have been talking about different tile-sets and while that would be awesome, I want to have selectable physics. Mario 1, 2, 3, and World all have very distinct feels and it would be awesome to be able to utilize some or all of those in custom levels. Maybe even play a Mario 1 looking level with World's physics? Ooh, or what about powerups? Drop a Tanooki leaf into a Mario 2 level? A Magic Carpet from 2 in World?

I think I'm gonna pass out.

I guess Nintendo could be so cheap with this they recycle a hand model...

From what I understand it may be possible. Buy DIY showcase. Import minigames to it and use a save editor (I think the one of romhacking.net works on showcase anyhow, if save if wifi copy blocked use homebrew to dump) and extract the MIO files. It is more steps than the retail game as but it is better than nothing.

There's nothing cheap about it. The images are composites anyway, there's absolutely no point whatsoever to do a new hand model shooting for every ad. Would be a complete waste of time and money.

The fact that the Animal Crossing and Pikachu NFC figure banner is right behind it I would be lead to believe this ties into Mario Maker somehow.

-It's probably in the Wii U section, next to Smash Wii U, because they normally split Wii U games from 3DS games.
-There could be pictures of Mario/Link on the other side of those Smash banners. Additionally, it's not like everything is set up, so I'm sure Mario/Link are advertised elsewhere. NOT TO MENTION, both franchises are likely to be represented elsewhere by other titles, so this is a way to differentiate things.
-A single kiosk with Mario Maker is sitting next to three Smash kiosks because it isn't a big deal megaton but a downloadable game they want to show off (besides, we don't know if more Mario Maker kiosks are being set up behind the camera person's POV).
-If the game's real, why wouldn't this pic be real? Somebody just made a lucky guess?

I wonder if at some point they made NES Remix 2's Luigi game and went "I guess we could just release these tools to the public."

Wasn't that just basic graphic hack SMB running in an emulator that mirrored the output?

Or do I actually need to go and put some significant time into it?

I think some people are seeing this wrong anyway, there's 3 demo stations with a central 'mario maker' pillar for the middle one. There's no demo stations that we can see for the smash bros. stuff.

edit: hmm that can't be right because you can see the blue arm thing behind the central one overlapping it. And it must be hanging from the ceiling as it doesn't touch the floor.
