Destiny Alpha Gameplay Leaks [Update: Luke from Bungie comments, read post 1557]

Complains about quality of footage.
Footage is only in alpha.

Let's at least see the streams of the playable beta first. If you could sell based on quality of the alpha build, a lot more devs would have taken noticed and there would be a lot more suckers on steam early access.

To be honest, it's probably just a ruse from bungie to get the non-casuals hyped (or at least talk about it) before e3.

Sucks I can't view it.

Can the mega links be viewed on smartphones/tablets?

This isn't alpha. They will call it that, but it isn't. The game is out in September, if it's still in Alpha they are having development issues...

I've been into games long enough to know this going to be pretty boring. I'm getting the same feeling I got seeing Brink the first time and everyone was going nuts over it pre-release.

Its almost as if aiming down sights make you more accurate.

Also, its almost as of it's harder to aim straight when you're hopping around like a bunny.

But what do I know?
Except that I like being able to move around freely while still being accurate. This isn't some realistic military simulator so there's no need for all that kind of stuff.

I like what I see, but I want to see some setpieces.

I am a bit confused how he keeps coming across various people though, he doesn't seem to be playing with anyone, so are just dropped to a big world with randoms? How many players can populate on the world? How do you communicate?

I need to know this kind of info.

The "quality" of the footage has nothing to do with how unbearably boring the game looks.

I love it when you cant do that because its ridiculous.
It may be ridiculous, but it is fun, and one of the (many) things that made Halo great. Also, there's plenty of games that have accuracy penalties for things like jumping, running, etc. and it would be sad (IMO) to see one of the few developers that still made FPS's without them to follow what is now the norm.

Oh well, maybe I'm just getting worried over nothing, and the final game won't have accuracy penalties when jumping (especially for precision weapons) Or that's what I hope, at least...

Exactly..

We really need to get these saved and uploaded to torrent sites or sharing sites. I always miss the footage.

This is the game Bungie wants us to play for the next 10 years?

It looks kind of boring and uninspired.

I too am hoping this one gets all the time it needs to be good. Doesn't really look like something I want to play for years though.

I know its alpha but that gun fire sounds like garbage. I hope its placeholder stuff. Also AI is about Halo CE level not seeing anything exciting there. But should be more polished in 3 months for launch I'm sure. Will reserve judgement for the Beta.

Can't wait for the inevitable PC release a year or so later. It's insanity that a game like this isn't on PC in the first place.

while sure, everyone should be able to play everything anywhere they want, this looks to be the most couch-and-thumbstickin FPS ever couch-and-thumbsticked. makes halo look like quake 3.

I don't think time is going to help it at all. The most frustrating thing is that $300mill marketing budget, if the game turns out to be pretty average, it's going to be rammed down our throats regardless.

It looks fine, although I agree there's nothing that really pops out about the gameplay. To those defending it because it's in Alpha, do you realize how long this game has been in development and how close we are to release? The game is probably not going to be changing much.

the respawning enemies are pretty bad. not only does it happen extremely quickly, but the encounters and enemy types have no variation - its always the same baddies spawning in the same spot. hopefully just an alpha issue. in one of the clips he kills 3 enemies, then opens up the UI to check his equipment before finally going back into the game and those three enemies are alive again and attacking. stupid.

but, it also looks like a MASSIVELY open halo style game with loads of customization. i'm so so in. the subtle time of day transition added a ton too. was cool when he landed in old russia and it was predawn. after entering a structure underground he came out and it was early morning complete with bright sun. very nice.

Looks super super boring

if this didn't have the bungie name on it noone would give this a second look after seeing that footage

The movement being so painfully slow and the ADS doesn't help, I was expecting more interesting AI since it's bungie.

Only watched part 1 and skimmed through part2 (too dull to watch it all) but it looks generic and dull as can be

I think that was an "entrypoint" to a mission, so the idea is that you speed through there, and because that area overlaps into a public area, it 'resets' for the next person coming through - given there could be a fair few people in a public area, it needs to reset fairly quickly.

that makes sense. i'm hyped.

Definitely need to see more (especially non-alpha footage). I'm liking the environments and the openness. The gunplay looks ok, seems closer to Borderlands than Halo (in my opinion).

I think from this early footage, the most disappointing thing to me is the enemy AI: appeared to be quite stupid, no use of any tactics. Maybe this was just being played on an easier difficulty setting, or they've had more time to work on the AI since then.

Still excited for this this fall, likely a day one buy for me.

Exactly..
It doesn't need to be a military shooter in order to have a sense of realism in the gunplay.

It is just a matter of preference, though. Destiny isn't Halo, but its not exactly going for gritty realism either with numbers popping off enemies when you shoot them, so I suppose there's no real way to say either way is more fitting for the game.

I can't even bring myself to finish one of the videos. I want to like this game, but I just can't. There's something... missing, and I can't put my finger on it.

I don't know. This is Jason Jones' magnum opus that he and part of Bungie have been working on since Halo 2?

Doesn't look inspired. Seems as if his ideas would've caught the world on fire before Gearbox beat them to it with Borderlands. Art design screams Halo, while that isn't a bad thing, would've hoped that they would've switched it up a bit.

Sound design and voice acting? Yuck. Like mentioned earlier, with AI interaction like they've done with Cortana from Halo, I expected more, something better. One thing is for sure, if they keep Marty's music, soundtrack will be spectacular, always is.

It just looks boring. A typical FPS with little to nothing new or inspiring about it.

I hate to say this, but from what we've seen, and how much info they've let us know, if this is all it is... And there isn't more that they haven't shown...

Should've stuck with Halo, or worked with MS to bring it out of the incubator years ago.

We'll see.

I'm glad this gameplay got leaked. E3 is always so fake with how games actually are, but this pretty much tells you exactly how it's going to play.

Edit: Oh and the music score is still pretty awful in my opinion. Is this the same composer as Halo?

It's cool to see that you can summon a Pike at any time.
You mean the hoverbikes? The footage I saw of it made it look painfully slow but the other player's one was much faster. Did the player here have a slow starter bike, or was he just taking his sweet time?

And I've gotta say those environments look amazing. They're the one part of this that impresses me, both in scale and scope and detail. There is a day/night cycle right? Or is that lighting baked in?

One last bit: I know this game is about RPG levels and enemies are just long hitpoint bars, but I can't square what I'm seeing with what I love about the Halo games. I don't want the core combat relationship to be between my leveled gear and the hitpoint bars of my enemies - I want it to be between the moment to moment tactical decisions of weaponry pickups and range vs enemy AI behaviors. Its throwing me off too much.

Grunts and Jackals weren't exactly the smartest of enemies in Halo either, just to point that out. The enemies in this footage look like very low level, low rank enemies. The Hive enemies you see a lot of in the footage are called Thralls, and are litterally the lowest ranked type we know of from the Hive race. So they are basically Grunt/mindless flood tier.

And could you clarify what you mean by generic? Because so far it seems to be a word people use without knowing what it means really. Only games I know of that looks similar to Destiny, are Borderlands and Halo. Generic doesn't really apply, when in an entire industry, there are only two other products that are similar to the third product.

I didn't catch all of the footage but it looks the same as it has always looked to me: could be fun, if it's not all that novel.

And space magic, don't forget space magic. LOL.

But yeah, I don't care about realism or anything, I just care about fun. And for me, things like accuracy penalties, forced ADS, etc. are not fun at all. In fact, there's not a single FPS with forced ADS that I like, and the only FPS with accuracy penalties that I like is Counter-Strike (also one of the few shooters that still doesn't use ADS, thank god)

Anyway, I'm not expecting Destiny to be exactly like Halo, but I would like it to be a FPS that's closer to Halo, instead of COD or BF.

Wait, his twitter says "Designer at Ubisoft". How much trouble this guy is facing for streaming this?

Well, If it's true that he works at Ubisoft???

He didn't compromise Ubisoft company, so he should be fine.

There is no legal action to be taken, due the terms of a strike only to some social media sites

Not sure I agree with the claims of it looking generic. It looks uninspired, but that could be entirely down to the location and the fact that the footage is from very early on.

Generic it certainly isn't.

bare in mind that weve seen footage with gunplay and very limited ADS. it seems that ADS has been added to assist with aiming at distant enemies and is not at all needed for close to mid range, despite the guy in this leaked alpha using it 100% of the time.

Throwing realism aside, as a weaponry based loot game, hip-fire accuracy and on-the-move accuracy are just two more elements that can help define each weapon's unique flavor and usage. I'm sure you'll see weapons that are far more hipfire friendly, along with ones that might be nigh useless without ADS. Sniper rifles will lose a lot of accuracy with motion, whereas a carbine might have much less. And both of those qualities might be manipulated with upgrades, assuming there are weapon upgrades like different stocks and scopes and grips.

It'd make sense anyway, to foster a varied arsenal of weapons to collect.

Did the streamer go into the city at least? I always imagined the city to be a ahhhh yeahhhhhh this is next gen moment.

You know because hd towns are tuff.

I definitely want to try the beta, but I'm not gonna lie, it's seems as if Destiny is missing something.

I just can't put my finger on it. A lot of money went into this game, but I still can't see it.

Generic it certainly isn't.

I honestly don't think I've ever seen a word misused as much in a gaf thread, as "generic" have been in this thread.

I don't think it looks that bad. The problem is that the enemies are super, super uninteresting. They literally just rushed the player and were taken down in less than a few shots. The Wizard wasn't any more exciting, considering he just floated around in that room and threw a couple smoke bombs. No attempt to engage the player at all.

My assumption is that is an early game dungeon of some kind, which might explain why it was so easy. The narration from Dinklage seemed to suggest that; if the player hasn't already reached the moon, I assume there's still quite a lot of story left.

If every dungeon is that easy and every enemy that lame, however, Destiny is hopeless. I don't care how pretty the game is, or how incredible the class-building stuff is, a shooter lives and dies on its combat.

EDIT: Spontaneous co-op looks functional and rad. Dude just rounded a corner and another dude was just there. Awesome.
