iOS Gaming June 2014: A Comfy Beach of Sunshine and Screen Glare!

What ios games are you playing ATM pitta? I saw you started battleheart how's it going? I am a level 14 ranger/bard and am enjoying a lot although it has got a tad grindy as of late.

Probably Out There.

:P

I'm playing yeah...Out There and Battleheart Legacy (didn't have much time for this lately, I was level 13 or something like that....I'm waiting to have more time) as single player games.
Putting more time again in Out There after the latest update.
I can't help just to love this game....can't wait to see red ending again.

Plus, of course, I'm playing a lot of Naval Tactics and my usual drug, Lost Cities, as multiplayer games.

So are you saying between FTL and Out There, Out There is the better game? I haven't played any of them, but maybe I'll pick up Out There.

Well, tricky question (both are great) :)
They are completely different games imho, but, and I know it's controversial and I'm sure the vast majority will advice you the opposite, I enjoy much more Out There than FTL (which, btw, I already deleted).
FTL is an outstanding port of a nice game...but to be honest I found it a bit boring when I played it obsessively on iPad...I remembered it to be much more compelling when I first played on PC long ago then waited for the port.
It's just....combat...frantic, nice...but it's just that in a really non existent storyline (I had great expectations about the new and improved side quests but really...it's just that).
You really feel like Picard under a Klingon heavy attack, and it's great...over...and over...and over...
If you look forward that, it's a great game.
Every run you unlock things and such for next ones...it's god send for people who like achievements and those things (I do not).

Out There is much slower, I love its lonely and deadly atmosphere and it has a really cool story for the 2-3 peoples :P that complete the game (the recent update should address it).
After a ton of hours I can say that the main complaint about Out There (being too random) is not entirely warranted and the same could be said for many other games (FTL included).
It would be a really (useless) long discussion...I just prefer Out There and I simply LOVE the part after the first beacon, when you get near the markers...not to mention when you are looking desperately for specific tech or resources to complete the game with the good endings.

So to answer, yes...I prefer Out There but again, they are really different games...the only thing in common is that they are brutal and set in space, both being rogue like-ish.
If you love space, you should buy both :)

sounds like they'll be charging for online play - is that normal with digital boardgames?

Someone on the BGG forum mentioned standard online play would be free, so it sounds like there will be some form of online tournaments that have a regular fee.

Anyone play Star Trek Trexels? It's $.99 and I'm curious about it.

I watched this review (or another quite like it) a while ago, and the conclusion I got was it makes your typical village builder type Smurfs-IAP-centric game look like a steal. $100 purchases left and right, premium currency that takes months to farm, stay away.

Super excited for Crimson Clover hitting Steam, I'd love for an iOS port with iCade support to happen in the future... I weep for the long gone era of iOS shmups hitting the AppStore left and right -_-

The new game of Gameloft is quite fun, called Rival Knights. It is a medieval lance competition game. IAPs are quite okay, you can compete in daily competitions and win an substantial amount of cash. Played over 2 hours and got enough money to buy the best equipment .

When you progress in tiers you have new kits to buy and upgrade, making 5 overall to maintain.

It's a fun game for sure, more then I thought back when I watched the announcement trailers.

Thanks for the long reply, Pitta! :) I guess my biggest worry was playing one and being burnt out on the formula, so I wouldn't want the play the other one. But since they're different enough, it seems I have no need to worry about that.

Speaking of space games, this one is sounding really cool.

Tharsis

Tharsis is a turn-based, perma-death, realistic space strategy game. With dice. And cannibalism. It puts you in control of the first manned mission to Mars, just as it’s struck by a hulking asteroid.

But some part of you knows this landing is possible. In fact, the more you think about those signals from the Tharsis region, the less you believe you'd be first to set foot there...

Defy the odds, make the difficult decisions, and embark on the most important rescue mission in all of mankind.

Being released by Gaijin Games (BIT.TRIP) under their new (offshoot?) label Choice Provisions.

Anyone else playing Folt? It's a gorgeous little puzzle game where in you try to clear the screen of the necessary goal by "folding" squares onto the play area. It's pretty neat, very easy on the eyes (the animations are GORGEOUS), and gets quite complex once you beat the first 15 stages. Oh, and it's free. Highly, highly, highly recommend this game.

I like Folt too, but it's obvious the design has a large emphasis on in-app purchases to reduce the ridiculous choke points. A real shame, because the core design is solid, but they're clearly putting their focus on this.

This is level 22. The split level setup has such a tiny percentage chance of being solved, as returning through the block is unlikely to happen with random colours. The only way to keep playing is to pass this level.

You'd never see such a choke point without gameplay alternatives in a non IAP driven puzzle title.

I doubt one game could burn out the other one, being them pretty different.
Actually I know people that alternate them, finding both complimentary to each other!

Oh, that's great! Then I won't spend all my money in the first League. I guess, gear becomes more expensive as well.

The new balance in Out There is outstanding.
Easier game, but still thrilling.
In 4 games, I've been at one step to the good red ending 3 times in a row.
Always at the edge of my seat.

Do not read if you do not know what blue and red ending means.

After gathering everything I met the enemy ONE SYSTEM from the Architects system.
Enemy destroyed my Death seed tech AND Death seed blueprints....I already had even the Wormhole tech installed and two Omega to activate the complete ending sequence.

Sigh.

I'm still shaking....what a masterpiece.

Beware the update introduced some visual glitches unfortunately.
Nothing major, but still....I've read the dev is already aware of those and submitting an uodate.

Speaking of space games, I just saw this on Pocket Tactics.

http://spacecom-game.com/

6 player multiplayer. Reminds me a bit of Eufloria, from what little I've played of that.

A strategic-to-the-bone, starfleet command game with a heavy focus on multiplayer. Spacecom is a battle of strategists in which deception, smart movement, and choices to battle decide victory or defeat.

No coincidence, no luck. Spacecom pushes your ability to strategize with a focus on real-time tactics and planning.

Now that I've made it further, I definitely agree. I'm now on stage 28, which gives you a very small playfield, 3Wx9L, with three locked pieces at the top and bottom and asks you to survive for 24 turns. Considering you only have a 3Wx7L space to work with, you're destined to lose. The thing that really bothers me about the game is that these locked spaces (not "x" spaces, but blocks with locks as icons) are never clarified. If you match up three like colored blocks to the locked space, nothing happens. But the game never tells you why or how to clear the blocks. There has to be a way to clear the locks, because otherwise they would just be "x" blocks. Because of this, I'm now ready to throw in the towel. I like the game a lot, but this shit is just pissing me off.

Hey guys, I just released a new trailer for the game I worked on, Hazumino! We've got a free content pack coming up with a new level and new characters very soon.

Cheers!

Downloaded. I find it fairly difficult! But it seems like a good game to just unwind to, and I'll probably get better over time. My only minor complaint is that if you do the control style for buttons, the buttons are only visible for a short time at the game's start. I'd like an option to keep them permanently visible.

Thanks for downloading! Haha, I hear comments about difficulty a fair bit, but like Tetris you can get a lot better with practice. :)
Thanks for the feedback on the buttons as well, I reckon I can add in a permanently visible option for the next version!

I think the difference is that a bad game of Tetris lasts quite awhile. Here you can fall behind and once you do the game is over in mere seconds. It doesn't feel as salvageable as a typical Tetris fame.

Yeah, that's true. We designed the game to be snappy and played in short bursts, but do you think more salvageability would improve the experience?

I might not be the best judge. I haven't seen other people play it to know what a good baseline score is, but I'm on the first zone and my high score is a measly distance of 300. If the levels are meant to be cleared in one go, the level distance is like 2500 if I recall correctly which means I'm doing pretty poorly.

That may just be because I spend too long placing each individual block.

It definitely is snappy, and good for short bursts. I just never feel like I'm doing a particularly good job.

Final Fantasy 3 has been updated to version 1.7.0 with support for iCloud saves and transferring saves between the iPhone and iPad versions.

Kickstarter is up for the digital version of Twilight Struggle, Playdek will be handling it

Backed.

I have to agree with you. I never really got into FTL, but Out There gripped me right from the start. It creates the strongest feeling of isolation I've ever experienced from a game.

Final Fantasy III was updated with cross save, hopefully this is a thing SE will keep doing with their mobile games. FF3 isn't universal though, mind.

What's new

• Game data saved with iCloud can now be shared across devices! At home or away, on your iPhone or iPad, pick the play style that's best for you.

Could some kind soul grab me a Deus Ex code for the Canadian store? IGN promo still not available in Brazil. :(
Deus Ex: The Fall isn't available here either so this time it's an one-two punch. :P That said, glad it's free so I can grab it on my USA account, I was planning to get the PC port eventually but this is even better.

SE seems to have issued a press release for Japanese media where they confirm cloud saves are coming to the other FF games as well.

If anyone wants to play some Naval Tactics with Pitta and I let us know. It is a fantastic game and we are trying to get a 4 player (or more!) game going.

Pitta I will leave it to you to start a new one look forward to it :)

Sony has released a Fat Princess game, soft launching in Canada. It's a match 3 game that features tactical RPG stuff that serves as background noise. It's...fun and the production values are nice. Despite being free to play, it's pretty generous in doling out diamonds (which you use to upgrade your troops, stingy on the coins which is the other currency in the game). It isn't innovative or really very deep, but hey, make it to Level 15 and you get a free code for Fat Princess on the PSN store.

Get it here.

Apple Begins Rejecting Apps That Offer Rewards For Video Views, Social Sharing

We’ve heard these rejections are now being received by a number of app developers, some of whom are posting details of their notices more publicly, like this example on MobileDevHQ’s forums, where a confused developer wonders, “so we can’t encourage users to share stuffs [sic] on social networks anymore? This is one of the oldest tricks in the book and even Candy Crush uses it.”

looooooooool

Thank you, Apple.

Are there any visual novel/adventure games for iOS, like Phoenix Wright or Ghost Trick or 999?

There is phoenix wright and 999 (999 is sort of stripped down to the bare bones...no puzzles IIRC).

Phoenix Wright offers the first case for free if you want to check that out.

I would have thought me mentioning those three specifically would make it understandable that I knew those three were on iOS. Or at least that i had already played them. I guess not. So are there games on iOS similar to those three without being literally the exact same as those three?
