2016+ Gaming Laptop Thread: Embracing Pascal's Wafer (Please Read OP)

Hiiii ! Kinda need help in getting me a Secondary Laptop as My Gaming Laptop ....preferably :
Has an i7 chip
Budget:$2000-$2500
Screensize: The biggest in the range of my budget
As long as it can do wonders and can max some latest games today then i'm good

Technically, can we like us a $500 laptop to use Steam Home Streaming?

receiving a stream from your gaming PC? Should be absolutely fine. you just need decent video decoding which all modern laptops will have hardware support for.

Could anyone advise what kind of IQ and framerates I should expect with this laptop?

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=tr&lc=tr&dlc=tr&docname=c03957198

quoting myself from earlier - did some quick tests on a lenovo Z510, but the processor, ram and GPU are identical

so on that exact machine (albeit upgraded to 8GB ram), I'm getting

Bioshock infinite:
benchmarking tool
- high detail, average 37fps
- medium detail, average 44 fps

CivV new game so almost nothing on the screen..
- all settings on high, 2xMSAA - average 44fps
- default (all settings high except Leader scene, tessellation, water and shadows at medium) - average 61fps

What's the point even of putting 12gbs ram in a laptop that doesn't have any specs suited for gaming otherwise :P

That's pretty much the worst you could.
Sorry, I know very little about computers, especially when it comes to graphics cards, or in this case the lack of them.
I'm sorry if this is an extensive question, but does anyone know of a really good gaming laptop I can get for around $600, or the best I could get at that price if "good" isn't possible?

Guys, where would be a good place to buy a laptop in a bricks and mortar store in New York? Any suggestions? I'll be staying near the airport and travelling in to Manhattan.

Even people who don't live in New York, but are American - what kind of store chains would stock laptops at decent prices? Thanks.

I think you should be shopping around for a laptop with i5 4200U/4200M, 8GB RAM and GeForce GT740M/745M. Something like this could fit the bill: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834231455

Not very familiar with US prices so someone else will probably find a better deal for you.

Okay, a couple years ago I picked up an Asus N53S for myself, and my sons each got Acers (I don't remember the models on theirs). My Asus is still kicking and doing a pretty good job for what I want it to do.

The Acers, however, have taken a beating. Mostly because the boys are always on them, either for school, the Internet or for playing.

So, I'm thinking new laptops for them. However, I don't want to go ape-shit because the eldest is finishing up his sophomore year and it's likely when he goes to college he'll either need another upgrade or get specific instructions about the type of machine he'll need.

In other words, I need another two year machine.

Country where it will be purchased: USA
Maximum budget: $600
Max size (can be in screen inches, dimensions, weight): They have 15.6 displays now, so I'd like to keep it there.

Planned usage (what kind of games or specific games it must run, if heavily gaming at all). Ideally you'll point out what resolution and settings are your standard, based off of what I've laid out in the OP:
The Acer is 720p and runs Diablo 3 pretty well. I'd say Intel Quad Core with an nVidia would be the choice here. I'm going to doubt that I can get them into 1080p at the budget above. We have consoles for many of the games they want to play, but they really want to enjoy things like D3, Minecraft and other Steam games they pick up on sale (so not necessarily the latest/greatest) at medium to medium-high settings without suffering lag.

Whatever else you find relevant, misc. things such as desired battery life, screen resolution, fan noise, etc.

So I'm going to make a modification to my budget. I have the opportunity to pick up Lenovo Y510p's for $869 through an employee purchase plan. I'm a bit dismayed about proceeding without an interest free financing option though.

Two questions:
1. My own experience with Lenovo is not good, but that's with their ThinkPad line. Is the Y510p a good laptop for what I need (above)?

2. Is there anything available at Amazon that would compare favorably at that price point?

Thanks for the tip. That is a nice looking laptop alright, but
a) It's over my budget which is around 2,000 dollars or 1,500 euros, and
b) It gets around 3 hours battery - not nearly enough for me, sadly.

If I was buying it to use mostly on a desk at home and had the extra cash I'd seriously consider that one, though.

Laptops with the Longest Battery Life

With that budget, I'd wait a couple months, just in case Nvidia or AMD announce new GPUs for Q3.

Best Buy I suppose.

You can run Civ 5, especially the "tactical mode" or whatever it's called, on a potato. I say this from experience.

i5-520m with Intel HD Graphics got 20-40 fps in native 1280x800 on a mix of low to med settings.

Sweet! I was hoping for at least 30 FPS so if my new one can do 60ish it would be amazing.

Yeah the CPU will get you by well, in Civ 5.

Man I can't wait for Beyond Earth!

Yea I know :<, one of the reasons I went back to a windows laptop, its the game I was always hoping someone would make!

I love my Alienware M18x R2 laptop and here are my specs:

I-3720 QM
Dual Crossfire 7970M AMD
8 GB Ram
500 GB HDD

However I am thinking of upgrading my GPU to either 780M NVIDIA Dual SLI or wait for news about R -M295 X and go Crossfire. Problem about AMD cards is that their drivers are not as stable as Nvidia.

Plus each 780M GTX cost like $700.00 (Yikes)...

Any advice?

2. Hmmm.... this one (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IQ4E0ZI/?tag=neogaf0e-20 Comes out June 10th. I know squat about MSI, and it has an i5 instead of an i7. How much of an issue is that? Looks like the MSI has a newer nVidia card than the Lenovo Y510p though.

The GPU will be much weaker. The Y510P comes with SLI 760m's (one of them is in a caddy that can be replaced with an SSD or a ODD). The MSI laptop has a 840m, which is a very low end chip. It's basically comparing a 780m vs a 750m.

If I were you I'd just try an eGPU or just sit tight--your specs don't seem to be that bad and upgrading GPUs on laptops is always really pricey and is often more trouble than its worth. Worst comes to worse Ebay that laptop and buy a new Razer Blade, it'll probably end up with a lower net cost.

I want my laptop to be stronger so I don't think selling it to EBay is an option.

So, it looks like these two are probably my best bet unless someone has a better idea or is wanting to sell their laptop at a low price. Of these two (both provided in this thread) which one is the better deal?

Any reviews out for the 3k MSI gs60 yet?

I haven't found one.

Dual 7970Ms is still a really strong setup. Don't upgrade until 20nm Maxwell.

20nm Maxwell??? Can that fit in my M18x R2? When is it coming out?

As far as we know, the MXM 3;0 slot will continue on and will fit the next generation of mobile GPUs. What we absolutely don't know, is when they're coming out. Seems like either Q4 of this year, or Q1 of 2015.

2x 7970M is so powerful, it makes no sense to upgrade now. Just overclock them.

I think this is the 3rd time I've asked about a laptop in this thread, but I haven't really been super impressed with what I've seen so far so I haven't bought anything.

I just found out today that I'll be moving to Korea for at least a year next month, so I really need to find something soon. The Asus N550JK-DS71T looks fantastic. I do see that it only has DDR3 RAM, but I have an older laptop with 2 sticks of 4gb DDR5 lying around, so I should be able to just swap them out.

Other then that, I'm pretty much just look at random lenovo's (z series and y series) and that acer a7.

Other than the ram, is there anything else I should know about before pulling the trigger on the Asus?

Edit: The MSI GP60 doesn't look too bad either. I hate how there's so many options, lol. When I bought my previous laptop, I pretty much knew what I wanted immediately.

There's no such things as DDR5 RAM sticks.

If you're going to spend $1100, you should go for a laptop which has a GTX 860M, such as the Y50 or Sager NP7358. The Asus not having GDDR5 VRAM will hurt a lot, even in the games you listed a while back. Why spend if you don't go for longevity?

Can you guys tell me if:

Intel® Core™ i5-4200U Dual-Core
NVIDIA® GeForce® 820M
6 GB - DDR3-1600

Will run GW2 in High settings 45-60fps? :|

Highly doubtful with that GPU. Might need at least an 850m to pull that off with a native 1080p resolution.

Hey guys, hope you can help me.
I'm about to get a new notebook/ultrabook within the next 1-2months.
I'm from Austria, so any german site would do the job too, if someone bothered looking through one. Or just some models I can look up if they're available for a decent price here.

What I'm looking for:
Budget up to 900€ (less doesn't hurt)
13" - 17"

1366x768 - 1920x1080 (would prefer 900p or 1080p for multitasking, dif. browsers etc)
8 gig RAM (again, multiple programs open ; maybe one with 4gig and I'll just add a 4gig stick)
1 SSD + 1 HDD (I'll at least need one with a HDD, and the possibility to add an SSD)
No need for a DVD Drive (so the Drive would be replaced with a SSD)
If possible, no num-pad (I hate those, they annoy me)
Also, don't need a touchscreen (would prefer one without? At least won't use it)

Will use it for LIGHT gaming (got a PC for those 1080p/60 ultra settings), browsing, music,+videos (no editing, just listening watching haha), school stuff, welp, normal useage.

Already wanted to jump on a MacBook and buy the 500€ premium for being a Apple user. But I don't really like MacOS nor do I want to learn to use it. Also IÄm so used to W7, that I'll just formate the HDD and install 7 on it.
BUT I adore the look of MacBook Pros, so please convince me to not get one.

What about the same rig but with a AMD Radeon™ R7 M260?

This would be easier if you followed the guidelines from the OP.

True but the drivers are mehh....

But I'll stick for 7970m Dual Crossfire for now.

Question, if I update to a new AMD card instead, do I need to obtain modded vBios for those?

Hey gaming laptop GAF, I have a recommendation request. Last year I treated myself to a Lenovo Y580 based on the version of this thread active at the time, and I couldn't be happier, so let me start with a big thank you from a well satisfied returning customer.

A friend has now asked me to source something solid for him, and I'd really love some help finding something that meets his requirements.

His brief:

1. Budget of £500
2. Must run Civ 5

My preferences:

1. Good build quality, reputable mfr, good warranty and support
2. Useful screen size, circa 15"
3. Must run Civ 5 smoothly at reasonably high settings

Civ 5 requirements:

Minimum
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8 GHZ or AMD Athlon X2 64 2.0 GHZ
Memory: 2 GB RAM
Video: 256 MB ATI HD2600 XT or better, 256 MB nVidia 7900 GS or better, or Core i3 or better integrated graphics (see note)*

Recommended
Processor: 1.8 GHz Quad Core CPU
Memory: 4 GB RAM
Video: 512 MB ATI 4800 series or better, 512 MB nVidia 9800 series or better

Please gaming laptop GAF, even a few pointers of well-regarded machines at the lower end of the market would help my friend and I out immensely. I feel a bit of responsibility here as the last few times he's visited us we've rampaged some games of Civ together on my trusty Ideapad. I'd really love to get him something to do the job at home!

Thanks and respect in advance.

PS. I note that a poster above had almost the same brief but had done some homework himself and proposed a Z510. Someone else also confirmed that the same machine upgraded to 8GB RAM ran Civ rather well. Would this be a recommendation?

I just ran the Unigine benchmark on my GT60 and the result is this:

I've been looking for other 870m results online and have found nothing so far. Is that score good, bad or just ok?

EDIT: Also ran Unigine Valley:

So I decided to get the y50 and I've had it for a week or so.. It's pretty awesome, but I got the base model with 2 GB vRam and i7 4700HQ.. It's probably one of the best laptops on the market if you want a slick size/power combo as it does use the new Maxwell GTX 860m. I believe Asus has a couple of laptops being released to compete with the y50 very soon and all three models, the Lenovo and two Asus, will have UHD versions as well..

Yeah, that's a pretty great laptop. My GE40 has pretty similar specs as yours, I have the 760M though. I just wish MSI would have also build in keyboard backlighting, that would have made it more perfect. I like the design of the Y50 btw.

Been asked to look up a laptop for my niece:

Country: UK
Maximum budget: £370-380
Max size: No real limit, just the typical for this price range 15-16 inch I guess.
Planned usage: Minecraft / Homework. Probably more of the former than the latter, and free to play / indie games. Ideally would want something with a decent i5 in it (I realise i7 is probably out of that price range), and a decent amount of RAM.
Whatever else you find relevant: She's a teenage girl, so I'm to understand that the laptop has to be somewhat aesthetically appealing.

Update: This any good?

As I stated before, Civ 5 can basically run on a potato, so something like this will work well for you: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DXFF6QC/?tag=neogaf0e-20

This is the closest equivalent I could find in your price range on Amazon.co.uk: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00H52J2WI/

I want my laptop to be stronger so I don't think selling it to EBay is an option.

I was suggesting to Ebay it and buy a new stronger laptop.

The latest series of core i are good enough to play minecraft using he integrated graphics. I always found the previous versions a but too slow. So that laptop should be fine. If you can squeeze to £450, this lenovo z510 has dedicated graphics.

As an example of this, I ran Minecraft for the first time on my computer and maxed out everything at 900p and got 30-60 fps depending on what was going on. It wasn't until recently that I realized that Nvidia Optimus was using the integrated graphics to run Minecraft.

So I've been kicking around the idea of buying a beefier laptop to use as a primary PC in my house. I already have a gaming-class desktop so this laptop wouldn't need to be ultra powerful but I would like the capability of playing games on it. Stuff like SC2, D3, and Unreal3-based games.

Form factor is probably almost as important as specs for me. I want something relatively portable.

I've been looking around and found this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834233022

I'm looking for some feedback on it. Does anybody have one? How's the performance? How's the build quality?

Gigabyte tends to have decent build quality but their design is either love it or hate it. Personally I can't stand 2005-era design even if it's in modern form factors and done in a tasteful manner.

Looking at the specs, it seems to be Gigabyte's Razer Blade competitor, but no mentions of battery life doesn't make it seem like it'll have the same long-lasting life as the Blade. Since I have a Blade with the exact same specs, I can tell you that performance is good enough as long as you run everything at 900p (Razer chose a 900p screen over 1080p as they knew the chipset wasn't good enough to run everything super well at 1080p and 900p native is better than 900p upscaled; Gigabyte didn't do the same thing, it seems).

In most games, such as Bioshock: Infinite, Dishonored, Wolfenstein, and the Arkham games, maxing out all the settings at native res gets me 40-60 fps, usually on the high end. The one exception has been Metro: 2033, where bumping down from DX11 to DX10 and setting the graphics preset to "normal" still only gave me 20-40 fps.

Worst comes to worse, you can also use Steam In-Home Streaming from your beefy gaming computer to your laptop.

If you truly want portability, look to the Sager NP7338. Not only is it smaller, it packs a much faster GPU than what you're looking at there.

The Gigabyte one is bigger in length and width but it's thinner than that Sager. Plus the Sager is a rebranded Clevo so battery life won't be too great. Then again, it probably won't be too great on the Gigabyte notebook.

Thanks for the info. I was curious about the Razer Blades but they just seem to pricey for me. I had planned on using steam in-home streaming for games that wouldn't perform well on whatever laptop I do get. I'm not too concerned with battery life. I have an Asus Transfomer t100 I use for on trips. I wasn't too clear on what I meant by portability. The portability I'm looking for is moving around in my house and the occasional trip to a coffee shop. Good performance at 900p would suit me fine.

Anybody have thoughts on how something in this performance range will hold out going forward? Say 1-2 years down the road? I don't follow mobile GPU/CPU releases too closely.

Thanks for the info. I was curious about the Razer Blades but they just seem to pricey for me. I had planned on using steam in-home streaming for games that wouldn't perform well on whatever laptop I do get. I'm not too concerned with battery life. As a minimum, you really should be looking for a laptop which has the new GTX 860M.

If you want something larger than what I posted above, the 15.6" Sager NP7358 would be best.

Spending $1.3k to only end up with a GTX 765M based laptop, in 2014, would be highly unwise.
