Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (Naughty Dog) Shown - 2015

I'd say there's something going on with Elena considering he's wearing the wedding ring around his finger, which I'm pretty sure we've only seen him wear around his neck before.

In the description, how far will he go to save the ones he loves etc etc.

The ring around his neck was a different ring; it was Francis Drake's that gets lost at the end of 3. The ring around his finger is his wedding band from Elena that he has in 3.

seriously though... dat facial animation!

love the facial animations!

The way he sort of squints and glances at the magazine is really impressive. Very subtle and lifelike.

I think he looks great here, he looks older but also more realistic than he's ever been. This is likely how a real world version of him would look (Pedro Pascal, Nathan Fillion)

UC3 spoilers

He puts it on at the end of UC3. "I swapped it for something better". That line showed us that he traded the treasure hunting for Elena, I loved that scene, UC3 has so many great character moments.

Edit: beaten, but yeah, we clearly now where Nate's mind was at the end of UC3. Can't wait to see happened between both games.

I don't really want the game to go all grimdark either but the death of a major character seems a foregone conclusion at this point and I'd say thematically it would still fit. While Nate pretty much always comes along and saves his friends it's usually his selfishness and/or reckless obsession that puts them in danger in the first place. Some kind of reckoning has to take place.

And while they didn't touch on it in this teaser the first one indicates that the antagonist is going to be someone Nate horrifically screwed over in his past. They don't go into great depth about Nate's past in 3 but it certainly indicated he's capable of some pretty awful lies. And it seems like Sully is the only other person aware of them. Making Sully be the person who dies over Nate's secrets would fit thematically if Nate is going to get some kind of comeuppance.

TLoU has better animation than any game I know of using capture...

It's fantastic, yes; but to me, it just looks like someone pulling on the character's face, not lifelike at all.

MGS5 characters look more lifelike to me because of facial-capture, even though they are more stylized and lower-poly than Drake.

Kind of...just kind of letdown by seeing Drake again as the main protagonist.

Was hoping so much that a new character (an old partner from Drake's past whom he may have left behind) to be the player or a young Sully telling about his adventures...

Never the less, Day One it is.

Crazy thing is it's all hand animated (key frames) right?
Madness.

that's what I can't understand. I'm surprised that with all the resources they have they still prefer this method and it's still so impressive.. I wonder if doing all this substantially increases the development time because that's a lot of detail

They prefer the end result they get from hand animation. The animators still use the mo-cap sessions for reference, they just tweak the expressions of the actors as they see fit.

Maybe someone called him old, and he was like "Nuh-uh! I can still treasure hunt!" and he went off to prove it and then everything went to hell.

I think the most important question no one is asking is "How did drake get to that island?"...

We all know he didn't just wake up on that beach after a party.

If only there were some sort of mechanical invention that could carry people across water or the sky...

They will most likely be using facial performance capture. With graphics that good and lifelike, hand animated expressions (no matter how well done) will only deepen any uncanny valley feelings.

NDs handy work in cutscenes outdoes anything out there. I would like to see you prove me wrong.

It sounds like this might be the swan song of Nathan Drake, so you might get your wish should there be an Uncharted 5.

They have a big animation department and ONLY use this approach for the cutscenes. During gameplay the facial animations are very basic and sometimes even bad. It seems like an automated approach is used there. If you only have about 60 minutes of footage to hand animate (actually a lot less considering the face is not always up close) it becomes a lot more feasible to hand animate. Quantic Dream for example wouldn't be able to use that approach without like quadrupling their animation department.

Lies, all lies!

Okay, maybe technically God of War an Beyond are more impressive, but I still think Uncharted 3 and The Last of Us look better because of free camera control, unmatched art direction, the lighting, and the amount of detail and amazing animations that make Naughty Dog characters seem so lifelike. Kratos looks amazing, but the other characters are all pretty plastics.
Well, in Beyond you technically have more camera control than in any Uncharted, considering the Aiden feature. They make different trade-offs though (AI), so it's impossible to compare them really. Just on the surface I think Beyond is the most accomplished for sure.

He just used MGSV as an example which, while perfectly valid as an opinion, invalidates its utility in rational discussion.

Moving on...

It was the case. Because no normal UC fan would want to drop the best part of the series - Nate and Sully - from the sequel. UC is nothing but an ordinary TPS without them. There is no point in doing an UC sequel which doesn't feature Nate. I don't know how much more times I have to say this.
Also - lame speculation without reason is still lame no matter who's maintaining it. And that was the case.

Whether or not the speculation was "lame" is completely immaterial, and I'd rather you not put words in my mouth as at no point did I even suggest that making the game a prequel would be a good idea. I took issue with, and I assure you this was quite clear from the very first response, your assertion that the speculation was being perpetuated by people who had a bone to pick with the series. Said speculation was, quite literally, "Oh, there's a quick shot of a Naughty Dog developer working on an old ship -- perhaps this means 'Uncharted' is a prequel and you play as Francis Drake". To ascribe any intent to that, nefarious or otherwise, is simply illogical.

To be abundantly clear, I'm not commenting on the quality of the speculation and neither am I commenting on the merit of it. I am simply trying make you understand that it was the product of deductive reasoning based on the very little information that was available. Again, nothing more, nothing less.

Artistically, Nate looks different from past games. Not sure if I like the new look. Hopefully Naughty Dog tweaks the character model a bit to have him look more consistent with the others.

They use the actors facial expressions as reference. Would you believe me when I tell you that many of the great facial expressions during TLOU were not done by actors but by the animation team?

Yeah, this is easily the best part of the trailer to me. The subtle nuance here is incredible.

Those moments did indeed look dire, but mostly for Drake. Could this game be about losing everyone around him because of his inability to forego his wanderlust obsession?

If I had it my way, I would make it pan out like this:

1) Introduce one or two more characters to be developed who are close to Nate (perhaps a relative or friend), in addition to Chloe, Elena, and Sully.
2) Nate's irresponsibleness gets some of them killed, tortured, etc.
3) He deals with the repercussions throughout the entire game
4) By the end he has to seemingly sacrifice himself for Sully, Elena, or someone, and is finally thought to be dead
5) And as I said in my earlier post, I would have the end scene pan out like that, with Sully in a museum wandering around and feeling uneasy when the alarms start going off as he then realizes Drake is still alive (but for some reason hiding? lol pirates after his ass!)

I shouldn't have gotten too specific, but that's how I would like to see it end.

I think you're on the right track. I think his actions are catching up to him and the repercussions will be felt by those around him that he loves. And I agree that I think he's going to somehow insert himself into the equation so that he (seemingly) bears the punishment while they get away.

I'm going to guess Elena gets kidnapped by group X. Drake has to find them treasure Y or Elena gets the axe. Elena dies regardless.

Nah, I don't see ND doing the damsel in distress thing.
What we know is that drake convinced Sully to go on one last gig. Considering UC3's ending what could possibly motivate him to go on a treasure hunt again and more importantly, where does that leave Elena.
Wait... maybe she's already dead for some reason when the game starts... God I hope not, I need Elena. Damn, that would kill me.

I'm hyped as hell for this. Just the overall darker tone is beyond welcome for me. I can just imagine Nate saying: "Sully, I'm just so tired..."

UC3 was focused on Nate and Sully, yet they still included Chloe and Elena. There's no way ND would leave them out of the game, especially if this is the last one to feature Nate, Sully, or both (I'm just assuming based on the title).

Never fear, my friend. Trust in Naughty God.

Here's my prediction

Nate married Elena...she gave birth...died...nate leaves the life he has been living, takes care of the kid. Kid gets taken away or some shit and he HAS to come back into the game.

Finally I can put my finger on what's bothering me about Nate's new model. Ready?

Fauxhawk

Looks like a goddamn douche with it.

What fauxhawk? It's a regular haircut, same as every other game.

I don't need to prove or believe anything, all I'm saying is that -- to me -- after playing through the Uncharted series and TLoU a combined total of 50+ times, all the characters look like they are having their faces moved by invisible people.

From what I've seen from facial capture in MGS5 and other things, it does a much better job of accurately capturing the small, subtle movements of an actual person speaking and emoting.

It makes no difference to me which method they use, it's just a small thing I'll notice then forget about after 5min of playing.
Unlike Big Boss' stupid fucking horn.

Naughtygawd made a great teaser for U4. Now Nathan needs to drop Elena and get Chloe.

10/10. Goty. Would tap.

Edit: Off topic Q. When I look at my profile it shows "NA" for XBL, Wii U id, and so on. How can I remove that? I want it to show my PSN, location, bio only

He looks many times more realistic in U4, less stylized. I think it's Naughty Dog just moving forward realism as the hardware allows. To be honest, he looks like a doll in U3 by comparison. I think he's artistically consistent as well, just aged quite a bit. Which is another choice I think makes him look so much more lifelike, and also more appropriately reflecting the age of the actor who portrays him.
