Final Fantasy Type-0 HD coming to PS4/Xbox One (no Vita), Agito coming too (iOS/And)

we already have placeholder box art.
I've seen that for a lot of downloadable games. I just don't believe they would release a physical copy of a PSP game for PS4/Xbox One. Maybe in Japan and Europe, but not in North America. I'd like to be wrong on this.

I'm not familiar with Type-0. Can anyone tell me what kind of Final Fantasy this is? Is it similar to any of previously released FF? Like FF9, or 10, or 12 or 13 maybe? Or is it similar to a game like Bravely default?

The game structure is mission and chapter based, like FFX-2 or MGS Peace Walker. However, this is the second FF game post FF10 to have a over world map. Later on you can get an airship too. IMO, although with some problems, this game was way better than ff13 nonsense.

The game also has a online multiplayer mode where people can drop in/out for limited time to help other players. Certain items can only be obtained through multiplay.

- timeline:

2006 first announced as FFagitoXIII (along with FFXIII and FFversusXIII) for mobile phone.

2008 changed the platform to PSP

2011 renamed to FF type-0, still PSP

2011 released in Japan

WHAT THE FUCK. Out of ALL the megatons I thought of that I'd see after my finals, this happens?

I don't understand. I thought Squeenix didn't want my money. But fuck, take all of it.

Edit: time out. No vita version? Wow. I don't have a vita but that sucks for all the fans campaigning for it.

I know why, but still, I'm finding it difficult to absorb that anguish has been the dominant response to this announcement. It's pretty incredible that not only are we finally getting Type-0, but that it's also being turned into a current generation game. What SE has been lacking isn't handheld presence, but console presence - this announcement takes me, at least, back to when FF titles sold consoles. It's a move that vastly exceeds what anyone could before today reasonably expect of SE, one that makes sense for the game/franchise, and certainly one that makes sense for fans of the franchise as a whole.

Again, I can understand the disappointment. The idea that there's some grave injustice being done here, though, is just groundless.

This is basically Square's console output from March 2010 to end of 2014 (roughly 5 years):

Final Fantasy XIII-2 (sequel)
Dragon Quest X (online MMO, Japan only)
Kingdom Hearts 1.5 (HD port)
Final Fantasy XIV Realm Reborn (remake of the disaster from 3 years ago)
Lightning Returns (sequel)
Final Fantasy X/X-2 (HD port)
Kingdom Hearts 2.5 (HD port)

And now that we're getting yet another HD port from a 2011 game that was on a handheld from 2004, while screwing over Vita users in the process, it's a move that "vastly exceeds what anyone could expect"?

Okay.

Isn't Shahid like THE Vita guy over at Sony? It seems strange that he found out about a major game coming to the system through the PS Blog.

Thats why I think the Vita version was cancelled with the decision to do a complete remake instead of a remaster or simple translated release.

Ok, GAF. I know nothing about Final Fantasy Type-0. I am a big Final Fantasy fan from 1-10, but never played anything since that other than FFXIV (MMO). Didn't touch any of the XIII stuff.

I love traditional JRPGs and have been wanting to scratch that itch on PS4. Should I be excited?

If you have a decent PC you should play FF12: IZJS through PCSX2.

so, the real question here.

Are they going to delay Agito until this is out? That game is obviously ready and pretty good too, I want to play it more but rather play the localized version, problem is the game spoils type-0 plot so I dunno what they'll do. Type-0 hd is probably ways off still.

i really don't see why not. there is no precedent for them to do a digital only release.

Okay.
Next up will be FFXII HD, Crisis Core HD and Lightning Saga HD.
By then PS5 will be announced and Square Enix can shift FFXV and KH3 over to that platform.

Nothing for Japan except smartphone ports because they don't buy consoles.

Hopefully this also means FFXII HD will be PS4 only and will do away with Vita and PS3
Your wish will be granted. Virtuous will be kept very busy in the months and years ahead.

Hopefully this also means FFXII HD will be PS4 only and will do away with Vita and PS3

Would you care to elaborate on that please?

I can't believe the amount of people who, besides wanting the game on PS4, also actually/actively want it NOT to be on Vita or other consoles.

Wow, the Vita listing made this announcement a mess. I was waiting for a Vita port of the game, but since this is not happening or not being confirmed anytime soon, I'll just import the PSP version and play it on my PSP.

I do, because they were looking for an opportunity to bring the game over that would make them money. Vita wasn't the way to do it.

I don't think it had anything to do with Vita fans "hounding" them.

If you really believe that then there's nothing left I can say.

I don't see how you can miss all the effort we made in the #jrpgvita campaign, Operation Suzaku and how every time a Jrpg is mentioned with the vita, Type-0 is near-immediately mentioned. Heck it got to the point where fans actually completed a full tanslation for the game just 2 days ago. Square was happy to sweep the whole psp localisation business under the rug and we refuse to let them. We showed them that there was demand for the game in the west and the 'miscommunication' was just a giant kick to the balls. As to how a HD remake will not make money on the Vita, last time I checked FFX/X-2 tells a different story. All we ask was for a vita version to be release with the next gen version. For Square to throw us a bone and show that they're actually listened.

What kind of FF is this? Never looked into this. Is it like XIII?
No. It's an action RPG with a miniature world map, chocobos, airships, mission-based structure and all that shebang. It's more of a traditional FF than FFXIII in many ways, though it's battles are more action-y.

SE is a horrible company and it's financial reports show that.
Yeah, they are such a horrible company for listening to their fans and bringing a game over to what is a large potential audience. Buu fucking huu.

And lol, there's much more to bringing Type-0 over than what you understand. Opportunity cost is pretty big, localization itself can be extremely expensive (especially for a text & voice acting heavy RPG like Type-0, the game has, after all, the largest or at least one of the largest VA casts of any FF ever), there's the QA that needs to be done properly, they'd have to put some serious effort into marketing it (that alone can easily have a budget in the millions, especially for a big franchise like FF, and you don't have to go anywhere near GTA/CoD level ridonculous marketing efforts) and distribution itself is not cheap. 2 million is seriously low-balling it a fuckton.

It was only mentioned in interviews because people was asking about it... Seriously, when have Square ever said anything about type-0 without being prompt to do so?
I think they did bring up the localization in the Japanese Final Fantasy Type-0 Ultimania book that goes in-depth with FFs. They said they know a lot of people want it outside of Japan and they are trying to think of ways of making it happen or something like that.

What? Companies make announcements all the time. Square have been bugged by everyone outside of Japan for 3'years asking if it will ever be localized. Most of the time the answer was we want to but we'll see. Vita owners kept the interest and demand going for Type-0 and that's a fact.
No, that's not a fact at all. FF fans kept the interest going. Vita isn't the home of FF or anything, so it's probably false to claim that they are somehow the largest group of people whom without the localization would never have happened.

Whenever I asked for Type-0 to be brought over through various channels, I didn't ask for it as a Vita owner/fan even though I own it and even though, sure, I thought Vita was a strong possibility as the platform for the localization/port. I always did it as a Final Fantasy fan and I couldn't give a flying fuck if it was a quick PSP digital localization, a Vita port, a 3DS port or a Type-0 HD PS3(60) port. I think it's far likelier that a majority of fans who've been asking for Type-0 are those kind of people instead of Vita owners who will never ever want to own any of the current gen platforms.

Urm.. My point is that Square was pretending Type-0 didn't exist if no one was asking them about it. So if the PSP/Vita fans wasn't hounding them at every turn, do you think Square would have mention Type-0, even casually, at any point during the last 3 year? Do you think that they'd work on the HD remakes anyways?
Final Fantasy Type-0 is bigger than its platform. People kept asking for it because it's FF. All of those Twitter "tell us what games you want" things attracted a lot of people who didn't own a PSP or Vita to ask for Type-0, it wasn't purely just Vita owners. Fans of FF, Square Enix & good action RPGs in general want to play it and I'm pretty sure a majority don't give a fuck if it's Vita or 3DS or PS4, they just want a localization to exist in any way possible and I'd think a PS4Bone release makes a lot more people happy (since people actually want a PS4 & Xbone) than releasing it on one of the worst selling platforms of all time that will probably be dead pretty soon.

Okay.

Yeah, but at least Type-O is something completely new. Those Kingdom Hearts games were already here before, the XIII series has been middling from its inception and FFXIV is an MMORPG.

Type-O will pretty much be our first look at a breath of fresh air since being stuck in this "Lightning is WAIFU" jerkoff fest that's been plaguing us for almost half a decade now.

Knowing SE they might just release it anyway lol. It looks more text heavy than most handphone games so that might take a while on it own.

I sure hope not though. Agito spoils a very huge endgame twist in the first two lines of its opening.

Well said. There was so much done to let SE know that their fans wanted this game and it's been a long wait. If no one had said anything to them over the last 3 years about bringing this to the west then I would bet my life that we wouldn't have had this announcement today. The lack of a Vita version after this long is a massive kick in the balls.

i really don't see why not. there is no precedent for them to do a digital only release.
I can't think of too many PSP games that were ever released on PS3. God of War Origins is one example, but it's a first party game and was because it was a collection. It's a rare exception. I honestly don't see Type-0 being released on disc in America. An exception might be if they released a PS4/Xbox One Fabula Nova Crytallis collection. I'm almost certain this will be download only.

I think it is still too early at this point to actually know or speculate whether it'll just be digital.

It's obvious that it will sell better on anything that's not a Vita.

Also, is Japan getting this?

I'd think it's safe to assume they'll be physical copies lol. Are you really going to rationally deny that?

EDIT: It's not some PSN/XBL game, it's actual full fledged game with content.

When can we expect this to come out? I doubt this year. Most likely next year. Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX is coming out this December. We have no other games until December.

this is going in circles but i just really think you are wrong. I don't see why they wouldn't do a disc release, it being a psp game does not ruin the chance of a disc release.

I would put forward that making a Vita version of the game would have been a problem however you look at it.

On the one hand, if they made it for Vita but also new consoles, the game would show it's lesser brethren roots. On the other, if they make it new gen only, they can go to town with it, and not have to worry about a whole bunch of crappier assets being made for the Vita game.

I suppose they could have made the new version ps4/bone and just ported the PSP version to Vita, but that would still be disappointing for Vita owners.

Can't win without essentially, making two new versions of the game, handheld and new gen.

Edit: I would also assume this will not be retail, and will be downloadable like AC:Liberation.

THANK YOU SQUARE
YEARS LATER BUT
STILL
I'VE WANTED THIS FOREVER

Ugh, no Vita version? SE continues to be one of my least favorite gaming companies.

Didn't the Vita version of FfX outsell PS3 version in Japan?

Type-0 might be popular but it's still a niche game and I don't see them putting this on disc. Well, agree to disagree, since I, too, am part of the target audince and took part in the #jrpgvita tweeting. I never cared where it hit (save 3DS, because ugh those screens), I just wanted it. I think Type-0 is one of the biggest games SE has made, was a well reviewed games, sold extremely well, and that they were always looking for an opportunity to bring it overseas. You can think that they just forgot about a game that they admitted they had localized and were just letting it languish.

It's all good. I'm getting a game I wanted in a language I can understand. Profound happiness.

Thanks man! Very informative.

Also, I have a question. According to Wikipedia (heheheh) Agito is actually a prequel to Type-0. I thought it was a mobile port.

Is it actually a prequel?

It's going to be the second major FF release (after XIV: ARR) for the current gen consoles. I assure you it will receive a physical release.

it's final fantasy. it's the most non-niche jrpg.

and using PSP ports as an example doesn't work. This is the first time a psp game has been ported to a next-gen console. There is no precedent.
