Final Fantasy Type-0 HD coming to PS4/Xbox One (no Vita), Agito coming too (iOS/And)

Shucks, the #NOVITANOBUY movement on the blog is HILARIOUS.

I think I may chime in as well for the kicks.

I get them. I was one of the many people who supported all initiatives to bring Type-0 over. The VAST majority of people who did are PSP/Vita owners and fans. And it definitely hurts when the game you advocated so much for comes to other consoles but not yours. I mean, even Xbox owners will be able to play it.

That's a low bar.

Considering the mess that the FFXIII saga was, definitely. But Type-0 seems to actually be a great game. Here is an import review (from our own Kagari) just in case.

Final Fantasy Type-0 Import Review

If you read an earlier post of mine, you'd see how I was a bit disappointed that Type-0 was missing Vita, yet happy it was on PS4. I bought FFX HD on both Vita and PS3. And while having it on a portable with suspend/resume is useful, it felt like such a downgrade going from the PS3 to Vita version in terms of both audio and visual quality.

Now Type-0 was designed as a portable game. So the benefit from going to PS4 on top of a hypothetical Vita version while great, wouldn't be massively so even I would want it. FFXII is a huge and expansive game, and a small.screen wouldn't do it justice, nor would I want how far they could enhance the game to be limited, hemce why I don't even want a PS3 version. I want it to be made in as much glory as possible without Vita limiting it

I understand you point of view, but to instantly assume that a Vita version will "push down" the quality of a console version (unless you have any proof) is just gratuitous thinking. Also, If they ever release FFXII HD on Vita and any other console, you are free to completely skip the Vita version and let those who prefer portability to buy it.

WHOOOOOOOAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!! Completely unexpected!

I like how Famassu argued the same point twice in his rabid bid to tell Vita owners they're irrelevant.

The point is, it would sell on the Vita. As was shown with FFX remaster. Squinex didn't shuttle the Vita version for lack of sales.

Another relevant question: FF Type 0 was designed for a portable platform and if I understand it right, it has quick mission structures catered to the mobile audience. How is this going to work on consoles, I wonder...

By all reports, the game structure will actually benefit from this port.

For instance, the control scheme was heavily restricted on PSP.

I can actually understand the Vita rage today. They had initially said there WAS a Vita version, but then it turned out to be an error. Ouch.

Forcing a PSP game to go to next gen instead of its sister handheld is something only Square would be crazy enough to do.

It stings that there is no Vita version but at least it will come to the west via next-gen platforms. Time to buy one when it comes out I guess.

They had better do something to make the leap worth it, then. PSP to PS3 is one thing (even that had bumps in the road, MHP3rd), but I don't think straight porting a PSP game to PS4/XB1 is going to go over well with expectations for those machines.

The funny part will be when this releases to lackluster sales, then Square Enix decides to release this on the Vita later on and it'll sell poorly again there since people will have stopped caring.

Let's not kid ourselves. They'll port it to iOS/Android instead. It's not going to Vita. Nothing from Square Enix is going to Vita. Ever again. (Except via Remote Play.)
If anything, their apathy towards the 3DS is what's more surprising.

That too: why is this not cross-gen? The demographic for this will still have their PS3s for P5. This is just insanity.

That's a shame. It's hard to face it, but time to import the PSP version. I'll buy a PS4 next year and remote play the heck out of this, though.

Well, at least they didn't go DD-only...

Also, hai Shiz! :D

Hey, you!

Not recognizing the username and avatar. ;-;

Not gonna lie, would much rather prefer playing this on my main screen at home with a dualshock 4. Still sorry for all my fellow vita owners however.

Now that I've calmed down about the Vita drama, I think it's a great thing that this is for the new consoles only.

360 and PS3 are 8 and 7 years old respectively. It really is time to move on. SE need the userbase on PS4/XB1 to grow in order to sell them FFXV.

Releasing games on PS3/360 now isn't going to help that.

Hey, we still get Mind=Zero and Neptunia PP to play.

Ice cold.

There is literally NOTHING to lose from letting existing console owners play this too. They are tossing money away.

I love how Shahid gives his blood and soul to the Vita, as a Vita owner that's highly appreciated, but that positive hinting at Twitter isn't helping. Just bury it already and mention if the situation ever changes.

The funny thing is that with his and the SQEX representative mess ups, the chances of us getting it in Vita are higher than if it had never been mentioned for the portable.

Also it is a physical release.

Does a Vita version existed ever Karagi? What's the story on this?

I'm pretty sure it exists for Japan at least. Launching an HD version of the game only on PS4 over there would be suicide business-wise.

Hell I'm surprised this game isn't for PS4/PS3/X1/X360/Vita as well.

Sure X1/PS4 owners want exclusives and are sick of the cross-gen nonsense, but Type-0 is still a PSP game and apparently there's not going to be that much work done to make it mindblowingly next-gen. S-E may as well take advantage of the massive last-gen userbase one more time to maximize their sales potential.

Instead this is the route they're going with.

Baseless speculation but uh...with the moves Sony and MS have been making to get more developers on-board the next-gen train. Maybe they pushed S-E for this? Again KH3 and FFXV are so very far away and jrpgs aren't just going to migrate to platforms that won't offer any benefits.

Why the heck did they even change the title of the game? Wasn't it called Agito? "Type-0" makes no friggin sense.
Yeah, but it was Final Fantasy Agito XIII. They wanted to distance themselves from the FFXIII line of games + they had some plans to turn it into a kind of "mainline portable FF" line of games (the sequels or "sequels" would have been called Type-1, Type-2 etc.), like these big budget portable FFs that are (relatively) on par with consoles' mainline FFs instead of being smaller budget tie-ins and spin-offs.

This assumes they put in the work to make the game look like a current gen game.

Didn't they already have it officially localized for US psp but scraped it? Why don't they just release it as a psp download. Wouldn't cost them anything to do it that way would it? I would buy both ps4 for the physical version and actually play it on vita. I loved dragons crown so much I got it for ps3 and vita but only played it on vita.

So Shahid only have power to bring games that nobody cares to vita, and when he makes efforts to bring the real deals (in that case Type-0) he gets a big "LOL NO" from developers?

That says a lot about vita's library in mid-2013 and 2014 so far...

Are you serious? Maybe the library is stale for you but 2014 has been a blast for most Vita owners so far.

I can't understand how people is blaming on Sony about this, it's an Square Enix game, not Sony's.

Shahid linked to the blog post on his Twitter. Also, he tweeted a couple of times mentioning this and the #jrpgvita initiative. So it implies that he and his team have been working on localizing this game for Vita, and yet it shows on other platforms.

In addition to that, in following tweets, Shahid has said he is fighting to bring it to Vita (even saying/joking that his job depends on it right now), so there is definitely some responsibility on Sony's side.

Vita is having a better year than 3DS, PS4 and X1, no doubt about it.

No it doesn't. It implies that they insisted with SE to bring it over. Also, how the hell would his team localize a game? That's not what his team does and SE would never let SONY localize a SE IP.

It's like Square are just trolling at this point, with the plethora of PS4/Vita indies being announced. But Type-0? Nope.

So is this going to get a substancial graphical update?. Or just the average resolution increase and some texture work?

It just seems weird that they would skip a Ps3/360 release

So many assumptions made.

I don't think anyone predicted a retraction 5 minutes after the announcement.

We should be thankful for SE keeping us on our toes. If we rest on our laurels then..... then...

I am not really in the mood to joke now.

Why can't SE, for once, do something for the Vita fans. We are willing to spend the money.
