Personally I think he might have multiple codenames, one for each area the game takes place in. They could be act titles like in mgs4 and reflect what Snake/Boss is feeling.

Wow! That's really interesting. I've speculated about this game every day, yet have never thought about that.

Wait what?.. ohhhhhhh Now I see it.. I feel dumb now..

Don't feel dumb!

NeoGAF is a big place. I expect you to become quite familiar with gathering new intel as you plan your next post.
Sorry, I tried!

I wonder where this new Mother Base is built. Off the coast of Africa? And do Diamond Dogs leave this base as well to move into a base on land, like Outer Heaven?

HOLY SHIT I FIGURED IT OUT!

At the end of the Red Band trailer for MGSV when we see Big Boss shooting 3 or 4 soldiers in the head. Those soldiers are his own! Something must happen where Snake flips and loses it and kills one of his soldiers, the body thats already on the ground at the end of the scene that we see when the camera moves to the right. The other soldiers all gather around and hold him back and when the alarm goes off he shoots them all in the head. You can tell something is not right with him at that moment and the real big red flag is the fact that he shoots them point blank. When has Snake ever shot someone he didn't have too, especially kill them like that.

This is obviously the point when Big Boss finally becomes the villain.

Fuck. You're onto something. O_O

Here is something I dont understand: They just greenlit a remake of Metal Gear 1, so if I understand it correctly, this The Phantom Pain is about Big Boss building Outer Heaven. And you saw the big shell rig from Metal Gear Solid 2 in the trailer as well? Big Boss build that?

And then in the remake of Metal Gear 1, Snake will infiltrate these very same locations you're trying to build in MGS5? Much trolling Mr. Kojima.

Have any more sites given their impressions on the 30 minute demo?

The big shell rig in the trailer is your base for the game, Motherbase or Outer Heaven. It's completely unrelated to the one in MGS2
The remake is just a fan-remake, and I think it may even have been scrapped already. Kojima will probably tie the events of MG 1+2 into this game, or another (though he says TPP is his final Metal Gear game lol)

I have a feeling Big Boss is gonna be so Paranoid in this game that he won't know Friend from Foe.

Could it be possible that Punished Snake hasn't been replaced by the name Venom Snake so much as it describes another phase of the character's mental state later in the game?

I mean the game is supposed to be episodic, so perhaps with each few episodes (like in GZ they all had their own credits) he is reintroduced with different codenames, slowly reflecting his descent into madness. We saw in the last trailers glimpses of Snake being "punished", grieving over the past, his missing limbs, comrades and being hunted by demons in the hospital which is like divine punishment, we saw him even say to Kaz "I'm already a demon" as if to say he doesn't want to go through with the whole revenge thing and still wants to play by the rules as he already feels guilty for getting people killed.

Now unless this has all been revised and they're just going with another direction for the character, I think the name would have still been relevant in the parts they were showing of those old trailers because it was more about him being a victim and his grief, whereas this trailer focuses on Big Boss's anger and the venom built up inside him which must come after all that. He seems completely different in this trailer, merciless and even more hellbent on revenge than Kaz was in the redband.

So maybe it's like Naked Snake (Snake Eater) -> Snake (Peace Walker/Ground Zeroes) -> Punished Snake -> Venom Snake -> Big Boss (for realsies)? I remember Kojima saying this is a story about "how Snake becomes Big Boss, a villain threatening the entire world" so maybe this all just describes a transiton. I could be wrong and they've just changed it because people thought Punished Snake sounded dumb. Is the japanese codename still the same?

Are they gonna change up the logo ?

I'm not a big fan, it was fun during the Moby Dick studios thing.. but its time to move on. I can imagine it would be hard to read and is confusing on store shelves.

Also was a bit disappointed with this years e3 trailer after 2013's excellent red band.

I don't think so. They were being controled by someone, most likely Manits. It's the most logical reason yet to explain their zombie like movement, and that one dude who didn't give a shit about anything.

I don't think killing his own men is the point he becomes a villain. His downward spiral is going to include many events, and while there will be a single point at the end that cements his status as a true villain, it's going to be something bigger than killing mercenaries.

oh wow! Ok thanks for clearing that up.

I find it strange that it's a oil rig unrelated to big Shell from MGS2. That seems weird.

Back on solid ground in Afghanistan, I was really impressed by the emphasis placed on approaching encounters in a non-lethal manner. If you want to build up your base, you can’t be John Rambo. Luckily Snake has a load of new tricks to help complete his mission without getting blood on his hand(s). Thanks to his prosthetic arm, you can attract guards by knocking wherever you are in the world, no wall needed. An active weather system brought a blinding sandstorm through the valley, and while it definitely obstructed the player’s vision, it also allowed Snake to move about under the cover of sand

Wall-less knocking confirmed.

I don't think it's quite that exactly.

Like I said before, both Kaz and Big Boss go back to Foxhound eventually, which means they both go back to work for Zero. In Kaz's case, it doesn't seem to be a ruse, while in Big Boss' case we can presume he does so only to secretly turn against Zero.

Skull Face is trying to kill Zero, and we know Zero wanted to make MSF his military arm with Big Boss as the man in charge but it didn't work out. Skull Face probably believes Zero will manage to get Big Boss on his side, so he destroys Mother Base and tries to kill Big Boss and Kaz.

Big Boss and Kaz seem to think it was Zero who was behind the attack on Mother Base, but it doesn't seem to be the case considering the above, it was Skull Face who is trying to take down Zero.

I'm guessing that at some point in the game, Skull Face finds out both Big Boss and Kaz are alive and want to take down Zero, so they all team up. But at some point BB and Kaz realize it was Skull Face who took down Mother Base and might also end up on different terms with Zero.

The scene where Big Boss is with Skull Face seems to precede the following one where I believe the alarm is going off because Big Boss is taking down Skull Face and the whole unit down himself. He's switching side, and will take down the biggest threat Zero ever faced along with Kaz.

This would justify why Zero would believe both are back on his side at the end and eventually go back to Foxhound. I'm sure the game ends with both Kaz and Big Boss having defeated a "bad guy" and going back to work for Zero, and only Skull Face fits that profile. It also gives a justification for Kaz to really regret his descent into madness since he was "wrong" about who was behind Mother Base's destruction.

What happens after though is either Big Boss tripled-crossed Zero, or MG1 will be retconned to have a whole other meaning (and MGS4). I'm guessing it will be the former: he and Kaz went back to Foxhound, but Big Boss was secretly planning a bigger revenge.

Tweet from the twitter of Kojima"

What happened to "Punished Snake"?
So on one hand it looks like Venom Snake is his "official" name, but on the other it looks like it was intended from the beginning and not a last minute change. So where does Punished fit in? It can't be a name they've changed because as he mentioned "V has come to" has been mentioned since GDC.

And you saw the big shell rig from Metal Gear Solid 2 in the trailer as well? Big Boss build that?

And then in the remake of Metal Gear 1, Snake will infiltrate these very same locations you're trying to build in MGS5? Much trolling Mr. Kojima.

The big shell from MGS2 was built after the tanker sank at the beginning of MGS2.
It was meant to be part of a cover up that involved the Patriots swiping the marines corp's Metal Gear Ray, then sinking the tanker and blaming it on Soild Snake. The tanker sank was said to have caused a massive oil spill and so the Big Shell was supposedly built around the area as a decontamination facility over the "polluted" area. Of course, this was part of the cover up and the Big Shell actually was built atop of Arsenal Gear which would house the mass produced Metal Gear Rays.
So it's completely unrelated to anything with Big Boss or or with Phantom Pain seeing as it was built in 2007.

I'm confused, what is he saying?

They're showing a behind-closed-doors gameplay demo that's 30 minutes long to select press today. The cardboard box and fulton recovery are likely featured which is why people are laughing. It's a stark contrast to the super serious trailer from yesterday.

Ok, Thank you mate!

Oh god.

I don't know what to think. I... I need to go do some soul searching. Anyone have a song I can play while I walk down my rain stricken street?
