Mario Maker [Wii U] is real, folks.

Looks exactly as I expected it to. Might be nice for more diehard fans but kind of unappealing. Do we know if it's a physical release or not? Some retailers are taking preorders at $70 in Canada (lol).

Looks great, and Mario games are simple enough for anybody to pick up and make a level using the pre-made objects / enemies, which beats LittleBigPlanet anyday.
I don't want a Wii U, but for those who own one, I can see this game looking like a great time.

Could it be that you just start out with these basic essentials (the 4 enemies, normal blocks etc.) and eventually you unlock things like castle levels, more difficult enemies and P switches?

I mean, the fact that even basic SMB elements let alone elements from later games were not present makes me think there will be more to this game.

Also it is probably hoping for a bit too much but I do hope this can give birth to a new generation of auto Mario vids.

The dog head undo button, the flies, the clapping hands, this is surely made by the Mario Paint team, which I believe is also the WarioWare team, and there's no way they could stand to leave this as plain as it appears on the surface.

I sense Mario Maker is going to be full of so many little secrets and easter eggs, most likely building towards some sort of meta game within the editor, hopefully even spilling into a full narrative. It starts with a few pesky flies bugging you while trying to work the editor, it eventually escalates into the Robo Fly Queen from Mario Paint trying to destroy your whole work station. Basically the Portal of Mario ROM hacking.

The fact that you can use updated graphics is what sold me on this. I grew up in the 8 bit era, and I didn't even like back then. Snes/16 bit is as far back as I will go.

I'm hoping that they flesh it out a bit more between now and release (add more enemies like buzzy beetles, more locales etc.) and in doing so, it also includes Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World aesthetics.

Well they already showed one easter egg with the skinny Mario mushroom.

I'm wondering how big of a production this is for Nintendo. Is this going to be a small downloadable game with only a relatively few people working on it or a full-fledged retail title with a development team to match?

I swear there's a post of me saying years and years ago "why hasn't Nintendo ever made a customized Mario game, where you create your own levels? A Mario Maker or Mario Manager kind of game?"

I swear this blew my mind, because I've been dreaming of this concept, including the title, for over 10 years.

I will eat a shoe if this is anything but eShop material. It is like NES Remix in experimenting with ideas, but not big enough for a 50 dollar price tag. I see it being sold for 15 though.

I'm super interested in this. I'm a huge Mario fan and being able to design my own levels without having to learn how to romhack properly is amazing.

I trust you are worth of your own words? Better start thinking about how would you want to have that shoe.

Anyone else think a companion mobile app where you can build stages on to later transfer to your Wii U, would be cool?

Cool, but impratical.

Lots of features based on testing in real time, like the mario "shadows" that let you know the exact height of the jump

ops...double post, sorry =(

Those shadows show you your last playthrough according to the Treehouse demo.

I think this too, but just looking at the UI, it really looks like the complete thing. (Unless the sides fill up with more objects, but then visually the whole thing wouldn't look great.)

Courses are so short too.

So Nintendo are selling something that one can already do for free for the past 5+ years without a Wii U?

Just watched this treetop session - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6IfLRh5cMY

And nowhere was there anything mentioned about sharing levels online. Neither did I see any options for it on the main menu. Is this actually confirmed, or are people just assuming?

The director also outright said the game is a toy to use to show levels to you friends and families. This does not imply online, only local. Not the most exciting thought.

Well since it is based on Mario Paint, they can easily add more elements by having this little guy to flip between them:

Releasing in an official capacity with an effort to make the actual process of creation visually entertaining in addition to the pleasure derived from creating levels? Yes. Sometimes I really, really, REALLY, wish that the self-proclaimed master race would realize how jurisdictionaly grey their 'platform' is when they criticize how official attempts to open up their games or emulate to new platforms are inferior to whatever has been used for years.

Because E3 demos in the year prior to release always represent the final product.

There could very easily be dozens of additional items (and no reason that the bar at the top couldn't scroll), other graphical styles such as Super Mario World, and numerous different basic level types for people to mess around with.

But the focus here was on showing off the basics of the game, in terms of how the level editing works and giving people some hands on demonstrations of the cool things they can do with it.

I know, it's just that nobody at the demo actually said or teased; "There's more assets coming that we'll show you another time" or any of that usual stuff meant to draw anticipation for future gaming events. It just felt more like them going, "This is it." Notice that the fire flower isn't even in this game, and it should come out of the same asset as the mushroom block, but no, all that comes out if you're big mario is more mushrooms.

Really wish a reporter would just ask them about more assets lol

But I am quite invested in this game already. Being able to put wings on piranha plants, and have everything bounce predictably off the trampolines at least opens up the possibilities a bit more.

Free? I mean seeing as even colouring pencils, paper and scissors to make your own cut out Mario costs a bit of money, I'm wondering how you are doing it for free.

I hope we can change the length of the levels. And you know what would be dope? Being able to create your own sprite sets. And I hope they add SMW physics...

Edit: oh, what about being able to compose your own music (Mario paint style) and use them in the levels?

The concept is great but like others have said, it needs Mario 2-SMW at the very least for assets. If they added in every Mario sprite, power up, enemy and background than it would be a definite must have hit. Otherwise its just a Mario 1 level designer.

Seems a bit light on content at the moment, so I hope they do more to give us the proper bang for our buck, but I gotta admit that I could potentially spend HOURS with this thing. Even watching the Treehouse demo I was coming up with ideas for level layouts.

I hope that I'm wrong, but if I had to guess the reason there are few assets available for use is because if people had everything at their disposal they could remake entire games and Nintendo doesn't want that because they might sell fewer copies of those games.

I think they're using E3 to throw out a bunch of prototypes and gauge interest. What they showed at Treehouse seemed pretty damn barebones (the "stage" was tiny and the palette was equally limited).

Still, a Mario Level editor is a safe bet. I mean, who wouldn't want to be able to make a Mario Level.

I just winder what the TTP (
time to penis/boobs/etc
) is when the community sharing begins. The mods are gonna be hella busy.

So far, online sharing hasn't been announced at all. Not a single hint. You'd think if it existed it would be an obvious thing to mention at E3, so for all we know there might be no community for this game. This wouldn't be unprecedented, Nintendo has shown in the past it doesn't like amateurly designed courses being put out officially, simply because if you're playing a game of theirs, the level design must always be perfect- http://www.nintendolife.com/news/20...xplains_the_absence_of_a_custom_track_creator

Going off what was said in treehouse, it really sounds like we're being told "make whatever you want" but at the same time, "keep your designs to yourself, don't be representing our brand or tarnishing the average official Mario experience." Even the director at treehouse said that, normally, he wouldn't let the silly courses the other guys were making playable to everyone, but this time it was okay because (something along the lines of) "it's for YOU."

edit: the full quote:

"There are all sorts of gamers in the world from professional to casual. You don’t have to worry about making really good courses. You can make something cool, something for your family, something that will make you smile. Just enjoy the game and not think of it as an editor tool but something that you can just enjoy while playing."

I wouldn't blame Nintendo actually, but as a gamer this would hurt my dreams.

Its not Wii U its the same style for New Super Mario Bros. That game is on the 3Ds as well. There is a button in the game to change modes. The game is just 3DS

I hate level editors so I'll probably be skipping this, even if it's Nintendo made

hopefully a budget release or a downloadable title

if we can't download other people's levels, then I probably won't buy this. real talk. to be honest I would spend more time playing other's levels rather than playing my own.

If these aren't shareable online then this is a complete waste of time.

Well I'm referring to the 'Kaizo Mario' games, fan made games were assets from classic Mario games were used to make them.
