2016+ Gaming Laptop Thread: Embracing Pascal's Wafer (Please Read OP)

Not in my opinion.

Where exactly would you even look for improvement though? That is, what are your serious critiques of the GS60. They can't exactly put stronger GPUs in there really, can they? Not without drastically changing the footprint, and the same for the CPU... so are there any serious improvements you can even make to the GS60?

Well, there is another good option, the Gigabyte P35G-V2. Might as well throw the Razer Blade 14 into the mix as well. Though the latter gets way too hot for my liking.

All of these new slim gaming laptops are impressive for what they offer. As you alluded, these companies have pretty much pushed the limits of what can be crammed into a chassis, so my critiques all run into that wall. I wish they had better speakers, but where are you going to fit them? I wish they ran cooler, but where are you going to fit the beefier fans?

I can't help but to think the slim laptops will take over, if Nvidia's 20nm can deliver on the 2x performance per watt promise. Of course people like me don't care about size and go for the strongest kit available, but if next year's GS60 has the strength of two GTX 870Ms, which would be like having dual 660 Tis, then there will be a lot of converts I think.

Just disabled the GTX 260M on my Asus G72-GX about 15 minutes ago since I got snow at about 10 PM and it didn't stop after an hour. Not sure if I'll get a new Laptop or a desktop (Don't really have a desk to tether the desktop to - I use my laptop on the couch/at the coffee table, or in bed.) Most likely I'll wait it out for a few months and get a build (again, not sure if laptop or desktop) with a maxwell GPU and a quad core I7 - should allow me to game at 720p/1080p on all but the highest end games for the next 4 or 5 years.

Until then... WE INTEGRATED GRAPHICS!

Personally I just don't like the way the GS60 looks I would like something with a cleaner aesthetic.

I'd like them to fix the WiFi, the flimsy screen, and a lower rpm fan range.

I'd like them to fix the WiFi, the flimsy screen, and a lower rpm fan range.

Yes, that sounds like something that should have been fixed a while ago... I'd really expect those kind of issues to go away after the first or second generation of a system, you're speaking about the newer 3K models, or just the original 1080p version?

Thoughts on http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IMTQ6I6/?tag=neogaf0e-20

It's only like $40 more expensive than the 15 inch dominator, and may or may not have more RAM (The amazon page for the 15 inch has 2 GB)

I'm thinking of just buying a gaming laptop replacement now and waiting for Haswell-E and Maxwell 800 series in ~Q4 for a new desktop build.

So I'm looking for a new laptop(mostly for school) and am on a hella limited budget. I know nothing I get at this price will be a good gaming machine, I just want something that can play stuff like CSS, FTL, and other less demanding games(I still have the first Witcher on Steam unplayed). Any recommendations? Was looking at the lower end Lenovo IdeaPad G510s.

Per the OP:
Price range: $400 or less
Country: US(would prefer Amazon since I have Prime)
Dimensions: No real specifics. Looks like most laptops in that range are 15.6 inch

As a minimum, you really should be looking for a laptop which has the new GTX 860M.

If you want something larger than what I posted above, the 15.6" Sager NP7358 would be best.

Spending $1.3k to only end up with a GTX 765M based laptop, in 2014, would be highly unwise.

This one has caught my eye, because it is relatively thin compared to other clevo's. Not too crazy about the two tone color scheme but I can probably get used to it. I really like the chassis style in this one but the specs on that are rather weak.

Couple questions for anyone really, has anybody bought a laptop from xoticpc? I haven't had any dealing with them in the past, they seem priced competitively. Is turn-around time on orders quick? Secondly, is it worth buying a msata drive for the OS install? They seem kind of pricey but I'm assuming they have around the same performance as a normal SSD?

I just bought http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834231455

Is there a way to expand the Memory to 16 gb?
The QA on the page says it can only use 8gb, but I'm betting you smarties can figure it out.

Doubtful, knowing ASUS its probably soldered on. Either way you really won't need 16 GB; that GPU will bottleneck you hard.

At that price point, the best you can hope for is integrated graphics, and this laptop is the best I could find (Intel HD 4400, which is above a 4000, which in turn ran games like BioShock:Infinite, Metro Last Light and Crysis 3 on lowest settings at a decent framerate.)

Any thoughts?

Saw this refurbished one in curry's too http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/comput...6ea-refurbished-15-6-laptop-21835837-pdt.html

Also, this list in general is of their refurbished laptops with the i5-4200U http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/comput..._ba00002522-bv00169428/8_xx-400-criteria.html

If your ok with refurb (check warranty and return policy so if they look scuffed etc you can return easily), then I'd go for one of the listed with an i5-4200M. It'll run a bit quicker than the 4200U models and the integrated graphics will be faster if gaming is needed.

The U might give slightly more battery life though

The original 1080p model, but I don't think the 3K models fix any of those issues.

You'll have take the bottom panel off, to see if the RAM is there.

I'm quite fond of thee GT70, since I own one.

I'm really liking what I hear of the upcoming GT72. Problem is, it's set to release in October.

I've purchased through XoticPc. Delivery time was pretty swift.

mSATA is fine. It's just a smaller SSD, after all.

Would anyone not recommend this? If so what might be the reasons?

No, because it has the outdated 750M. If $100 is your budget, you should be buying something with an 860M, such as the Y50, Sager NP7359, or Sager NP7338.

Nice thanks for the heads up found this http://www.sagernotebook.com/index.php?page=product_info&model_name=NP7338 for about the same price.

Is there any benefit to having windows 8.1 these days? I can pay an extra $15 to go back to windows 7 which I tend to prefer, would anyone talk me out of going 7 over 8.1 when 8.1 is cheaper?

I need some "technical" help. I just bought an HP Notebook, not very powerful but it'll keep me entertained during my business trips.

I'm the UK, so the laptop has UK plugs, however I'm going to America for a while, and I don't want to use a UK>US adapter, but instead I want to get a US cable for the laptop, it'll just be easier to handle around.

My problem is that I don't know the name of just the cable, not really the adapter, but I want to be able to find the cable shown in the picture below. Thanks for the help.

Eh, Windows 8 w/ Start8 installed is just a better version of Windows 7, to me.

All I can suggest is that you either contact HP, or buy a US adapter from eBay.

Trying to help a friend with a new laptop purchase but I'm having some trouble. Was wondering if any of you guys could help.

Wants:

1080p screen
8 GB ram
at least a 13'' screen
No more than $1000

Does not care about:

Gaming
Portability
Battery life

The problem I seem to be running into is his wants of a 1080p screen / 8 gigs of ram. That usually throws me towards a high-end ultrabook which can't really be found for under 1k (even though he told me he can't stress enough that he doesn't care about portability / battery life). He's willing to buy an SSD separate (Crucial MX100 256 gig which is about $110, so that leaves us with about $890 to work with)

I know some Clevo's can probably hit this pretty easily but I'm really not familiar with them. Any help would be great.

Tell him to configure one of these to his heart's content.

It's an IEC-320 'cloverleaf' cable. Should be easy to find a US one on ebay for cheap. I assume the actual charger is universal?

I'm looking for a laptop for work, but I also wouldn't mind to be able to game on it. I don't really have a budget in mind (depends how I feel when I buy it), but I don't think I'd spend more than $1300. I never had a laptop before, so I'm not sure how much the weight plays into the portability.

The stuff I do for work includes a lot of web development, which includes using Photoshop, Illustrator, whatever. I also do some side stuff with sound engineering, so I'd like to be able to do that as well.

As for gaming, this isn't the highest priority, but it'd be nice to play at least Dota 2 at a good quality. I have a desktop for the more high-end gaming, and a lot of the games I'd probably be playing on here aren't too graphically intense. But I'd also like to make sure that this laptop lasts for a while.

For display size, I have no idea if I should go for 15 or 17 (13 would be way too small). I'm leaning towards the larger, but I'm not sure how much bulk that would add to the laptop I do know I'll want an SSD (boot/OS, and most used programs) and a HDD (other stuff) in there. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Useage:
general usage (Office, browsing, HD Movies, iTunes, most of the time all at once). Maybe some browser/MOBA gaming, nothing fancy, got a dedicated gaming rig. Even a iGPU would do the job
What I'm looking for:
Budget up to 900€ (less doesn't hurt)
15"
(13" is too small, 17" maybe to big)
1920x1080 (for multitasking, dif. browsers etc)
8 gig RAM (again, multiple programs open ; maybe one with 4gig and I'll just add a 4gig stick)
1 SSD + 1 HDD (At least SPACE for a SSD, and I'll replace the HDD with one)
No need for a DVD Drive (if it has one, okay. If not, will most likely replace for a HDD/SSD)
If possible, no num-pad (I hate those, they annoy me, but there aren't many 15" without one)
Also, don't need a touchscreen (Aleast won't use it. Any downsides to one with a touchscreen?)
Needs ETHERNET Lan + W-lan]

Still didn't find anything which suits my needs.
Would it be the best to get something one with only 1 HDD, take that out, put a SSD inside and work with USB3 externals?

Just found these two. They are the same price, one freeDOS (got a W7 CD and want a SSD anyways, so idc):
MSI GP-60
i5-4200H
8gb RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 840M 2gb
500gb HDD
[(+ mSATA-Slot for a SSD)
MSI CX-61
i5-4200M
8gb RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GT 820M 2gb
1tb HDD
(doesn't say anything about adding a SSD)

So the first one should be able to hold the included HDD, and add a SSD, with keeping the ODD, right?
Also, how hot would it get with a 840m ? I hardly ever want go game on it, that's why I'd even prefer a iGPU, cause it would be a lot cooler/less noisy. Would it be save to just deactivate the 840m?

Country USA
Maximum budget - ~$500-600
Max size - Don't care, so long it's small enough to be easily carried to and from school every day.
Planned usage - Schoolwork, and games-wise just as good as I can get for the price. I will mostly be playing Dota, older strategy and indie games so it doesn't have to be anything too intensive.

Intel® HD Graphics 4600
6.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3L SDRAM 1600 MHz

Just looking for something that will play mid range games at a decent price.

or perhaps this?

This.

Looking to replace my 2 year old asus g75vw (660m gtx). Used primarily for gaming, as max as I can get. That MSI gt70 dominator (870m gtx) is looking pretty good but I have no experience with the brand. Are they comparable to ASUS in terms of build quality and reliability?

I wanted to ask, will there be any gaming laptop that might be = to GT70 Dominator in specs? Like having GTX 880M 8GB, blu-ray burner and 17" screen for 2000 or less? I just don't like how the Dominator GT70 looks.

Figured I might as well chip in with my experiences with the Lenovo y510p. Got it for $900 in January with the single-card GT 755M, model 59405668.

  • I have a Synaptics touchpad, and it's totally fine for most things, but it should not be used for gaming due to lack of physical buttons.
  • Non-gaming battery life is an impressive 5-6 hours. Limiting the maximum processor state helps a ton; you don't need 2.4GHz of i7 for web browsing.
  • I've seen the matte screen and it's pretty cool, but I have the glossy screen and it also looks good, especially indoors.
  • The y510p models come with two different WiFi cards. I hear the 2230 has awful connectivity issues, but I have the 7260 and it's good enough.
  • The i7-4700MQ is an absolute beast. Runs Dolphin and PCSX2 like a champ. Emulation was the primary reason for me getting this laptop and I'm more than satisfied with it.
  • Idle CPU temperature is currently around 40C. Regular PC gaming puts it around 70C, intensive emulation (forcing turbo boost using ThrottleStop) can push it up to 98C. Haven't yet experienced a forced shutdown from overheating, so that's good.
  • 6 pounds, portable enough.
  • Appearance-wise it doesn't stand out a ton, which is a plus. It smudges surprisingly easily, but that's not a dealbreaker.
  • Has a DVD drive, which is useful.
IMO for $900 the y510p is the most balanced gaming laptop you can get. It's less a gaming laptop and more a well-designed all-purpose laptop with gaming capabilities, which is great.
I wouldn't get the SLI y510p as I hear that model is far more prone to overheating and throttling, not to mention you lose that awesome battery life.

The only major downside is that the headphone jack produces a very noticeable hiss. I have earbuds with a volume slider that can turn down the hiss, so that's not a problem for me.

  • Edit Update: Playing through the Battlefield 3 campaign at high settings, 900p, no AA. Framerate is 60fps for the most part. CPU temperatures hit a maximum 87C, but GPU temperatures hover around 90C and can go as high as 98C. Might be an issue for play periods of more than a couple hours; haven't tried playing for more than 2.
  • Recently deduced that the GT 755M is pretty much spec-for-spec a GTX 650 with 2GB, if this helps anyone.

Is your laptop still in good shape? I'd like to recommend that you wait until October, for the updated MSI GT72. The all aluminum body, dual fan cooling design, IPS display, and larger PSU are all huge additions over the current GT70.

Hey thank you for getting back to me. Yes my asus is still in great shape and it still plays mostly everything on medium to high. But I thirst for new tech!

laptop gaf, I need your help.

I don't nessicicarly need a gaming laptop, but there isn't a regular laptop gaf and I can play games on the one I got now, so i guess that counts.

So, could you all help me find a latop that at least has the same specs as the current crap laptop I have now for the cheapest price possible?

Thread title says "Read OP!" for good reason.

What a very informative thread!

So, I'm going off to college in the coming months, and therefore need a laptop that is of course durable and lightweight. However, (since I'm posting on here, after all) I want to be able to play games on it in my spare time (If I ever have any). Here's my info:

Country: USA
Budget: $600-$800
Size: At least 13''.
Intensity: Would like to run games at 720p60, and perhaps 1080p60-ish (40-60FPS). 1080p native resolution for the screen is desired for other purposes.
Other: I'm looking primarily at last-gen (and the gen before that, believe it or not) titles. Current-gen is nice as well, but not a requirement. Good battery life is a must. I also intend to do video editing, photo editing, light programming and 3D design.

Pulled the trigger on one of these from xotic. Ordered last weekend and got a tracking number for shipping yesterday. Delivery on Friday.

Thanks for the recommendation K.Jack!

Anybody else using something with Maxwell hardware? I'm coming from a desktop so I have no point of reference on whether its better or not that the non-Maxwell stuff

Definitely ordering from these guys. Incredible build + SSD + MS Office?
Yes.

I'll try to look for something in my price range first, though. As is, that will eat up a lot of my budget.

Alright, this is about $830, and I'm really liking the looks of it!

Alright, this is about $830, and I'm really liking the looks of it!

Yea basically. Here's basically what my build is
-15.6" FHD 16:9 LED Backlit Wide screen (1920x1080)
-4th Generation Intel® Haswell Core™ i7-4710MQ (2.5GHz - 3.5GHz, 6MB Intel® Smart Cache)
-NVIDIA® GeForce™ GTX 860M (2.0GB) GDDR5 PCI-Express DX11 w/ Optimus™ Technology
-8GB DDR3 1600MHz [1x8GB] Dual Channel Memory
-120GB Crucial M5 mSATA SSD
-1TB 5400RPM [SATA II - 3GB/s] (was a free upgrade)
-6X Blu-Ray Reader + 8X DVDRW/CDRW Super Multi Combo Drive (added a Blu-ray reader)
-Intel® Dual Band AC 7260 802.11 A/AC/B/G/N 2.4/5.0GHz + Bluetooth™ 4.0 (opted for the intel wireless card)

I didn't buy an OS or Office since I have a retail copy of Win8.1 already. But their prices don't seem too bad for OS's. I opted for the bigger slower 1TB hdd since I bought the 120GB mSATA SSD for the OS install.

Only thing I'll say about the pricing is the only way you can get the 3% discount is if you pay with cash. Paying that way just seemed to be a large pain in the ass. I opted to pay with Paypal so my total came out to around $1100.

With the first setup, I figure that in theory the dual GPUs should be able to push the extra pixels for that 1080p res... But I'm worried about microstutter... This is the main concern.

The second laptop looks solid all around. I'm sure that the 755m should be enough to drive that res... Plus the added bonuses of more capacity (RAM + HDD) and faster CPU (sort of).

I know that people probably ask for miracle laptops that can run games in ultra for 500$ all the time, so I'm going to try to ask for something a tiny bit more reasonable.

Country- America

Max Budget- 700-800$

Max Size- Ideally between 15 and 17 inch screen size.

Usage- Microsoft office, lots of typing, web browsing, lots of gaming. The key thing I want is a laptop with enough power to run demanding current gen games like Witcher 3 and Assassins Creed Unity, but I just need enough power to run these games at at least very low settings and very low resolutions (even 800x600) at 30fps. I just want to be able to play these type of games, graphics aren't a priority.

Preferred resolution- 1080p or around 1600x900.
