Liveblog thread for 3DS new Nintendo IP announcement (Code Name STEAM)

Only two localizations.

That's it.

Nintendo has 5 nintendo-published titles for 2014/2015 for 3DS. Five.

Has anyone asked Reggie about the lack of 3ds games at the show this year? It's fine if they want to focus on wiiu and leave 3ds for a future direct but at least convey that to fans.

er, isn't the purpose of tonight's 3DS roundtable assumingly to announce new games? I'm kinda confused by all this concern about how they've barely announced anything about 3DS games before they've even held the 3DS event.

There hasn't been any interviews with Reggie except one with IGN and they didn't ask anything.

Not new games, one game is supposed to be announced tonight.

They're only announcing one game apparently.

I think the reason for Nintendo not announcing so many/any 3DS games at all is because they are gearing up for the next gen handheld.

90 minutes is awfully long for just 3DS Majoras Mask. Although with all the recent hints, how can it not be that. Personally hoping for Metroid though. It is probably NFC games given the length of the presentation.

what's funny is I would bet money in a month or so we will get a 3DS direct and people will be like WTF why not at E3?????

Nintendo is just crazy like that.

90 minutes is awfully long for most games, not only Majora's Mask.

They announced the NFC transmitter for the 3DS. So there have to be some games that use it... On the other hand, Nintendo is known for letting those peripherals die quickly

On the one hand, 90 minutes for one game would suggest it's something fresh and innovative and new... Something potentially polarizing, hence Nintendo taking the time to explain it in nuanced detail to the press, so they can explain it to us and sell us on the concept.

On the OTHER hand, I can also totally picture Nintendo unveiling Majora's Mask 3D and taking the time to explain a handful of new features in exhaustive detail, as well as reveling in the history of the project and so on.

RE: 90 minutes; it's not a 90 minute presentation on a game, it's a 15-20 minute presentation on a game and then a Q&A with developers and the 90 minutes is mostly about reserving people's time rather than saying they'll fill it all. This isn't the first or last time they've done this. I'd expect more like 45 minutes total based on past events.

I guess I'd have two reactions:

1) If you exclude the 7 titles Nintendo has already published for 3DS in 2014, and combine the two Pokemon SKUs, then yes they do currently have 5 Nintendo-published titles slated for the rest of 2014 (a total of 12 this year) + whatever they announce tonight. It's not clear why the emphasis on 2014 titles would mean that they aren't going to publish titles in 2015, and I'd expect to hear more about those later.

2) The 3DS is in its twilight years, and it's pretty normal for releases to ramp down. Most of Nintendo's major franchises are on the platform, and most of them have hit saturation in terms of number of releases (IE you only get one Mario Kart a platform, only one Animal Crossing, but you can have a couple of Mario games, etc), and they've done a bunch of new IPs. I wouldn't expect some crazy turnaround or something. The 3DS is about the age the GBA was when its successor was announced, and the lifespan of hardware is presumably shrinking rather than growing on the basis of rapid mobile SOC innovation and renewed competition from non-dedicated devices.

Elite Beat Agents: Dancing All Day
Hotel Dusk X

I would lose my shit over a new Ouendan/EBA game

On the topic of lifespan, I suspect the 3DS has one year of life left before it's successor is announced. A year and a half before the successor is out, probably.

But Guessing Nintendo is an impossibility.

They could have a retrospective thing I guess. Like they go through all the Zelda/Metroid/Mother games before announcing the game. Then add in questions and it doesn't seem too long.

It would be pretty smart of Nintendo to announce a bunch of 3DS games tonight, spreading the release of new games across the entire week instead of one presentation like MS/Sony/EA/UBI

Don't crush my heart, N

Nintendo usually has a 3DS direct but odd they havent announced localizations for 3DS games outside Layton vs Phoenix and Fantasy Life which are 3rd party games.

If that's the case, I don't see how this could be remake, since most people understand most of the mechanics. Even with 45 minutes, that's a lot to cover for a game we already know. Whatever that' new can't take up that much time to talk about. Not to mention it would spoil it.

I completely disagree with this. I think it's more that they wanted all Nintendo press coming out of E3 to be about the Wii U to prove that it is still alive.

That's exactly it. Nintendo's objective this week was to prove that they are fully supporting the Wii U now and into the future, and to make people want to own one. If NeoGAF is any indication (which, I admit, it very rarely is), mission accomplished.

I wouldn't be surprised if we got a Nintendo Direct in the next few weeks which is focussed on 3DS.

I'd probably disagree there. Yeah, the GBA had a shorter lifespan, but the DS had a ~6 1/2 year lifespan, while the 3DS is less than 3 1/2 years old, and the hardware's bestselling game just launched back in October.

While the mobile market does change the scene, Nintendo is... Nintendo. I don't think they really see mobile as competition. I at least personally see them as continuing to stick with hardware longer because, regardless of rapid innovation from non-dedicated devices, the amount that Nintendo themselves can innovate per hardware iteration is now significantly less than it was in the Game Boy era. Putting out a new, improved device sooner than later would just mean a higher price tag and, between the 3DS's own launch woes by being pushed out too soon and receiving a quick price cut combined with the Vita's failure to launch, I definitely believe that's something Nintendo wants to avoid.

Also based on recent talk about no longer keeping the console and handheld hardware development so separated, I think Nintendo won't put out the 3DS's successor until we're closer to their next home console in order for the hardware to be able to interact in ways that the 3DS and Wii U, by all rights, should be capable of doing.

It is true, though, that they typically only put out one iteration of franchises like Mario Kart etc per hardware cycle, so expectations of exactly what Nintendo will be releasing should probably be tapered some at this point.

It would make a lot of sense if it turned out to be Final Fantasy Explorers.
