Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 8: Put mii in, coach

I was fortunate enough to play 14 matches at my local Best Buy tonight.

The game certainly feels similar to Brawl, but the big thing, for me, was the lag in the air. Every time I tried a neutral A attack or down A attack and landed on the ground or a platform, my character felt "stuck" for a few milliseconds before I was able to do anything else.

Also, air combat just feels....off. It doesn't feel that smooth at all and is rather jerky.

Game looked great in HD though, and I really do love the stages (aside from Wiley Castle).

Where do you live!!!???? In "under a rock city"? Jesus, how did you play 14 times!?

Also, yeah, I totally agree. Landing felt like i was glued to the ground. Didn't want to jump unless i had to.

Also want to say that when I explained the possibility of the Chorus Kids after explaining the Rhythm Heaven enemy in Smash run that appeared in my run through it, many of the people were NOT happy when I pulled up the wiki and passed around the phone, this includes girls (who might find them cute) and casuals. I really think the basic design of them is off putting to people.

Yeah, the line was actually LONGER when I left than when I got there. I assume if you were like first 20+ in line, going to the back might not be terrible at some locations, but at mine, no way.
That's how mine was; I was probably at 30th and when I came out of the store like an hour later, the line had not shrunk.

That's just part of the newcomer reveal process:

1) Hate character
2) Watch trailer
3) Love or at least appreciate character

Really hope they address this. :(

So this has probably been discussed but what are the chances Miis are allowed in pro matches?

It depends on whether or not they have a default moveset, which I'm sure they will. Probably similar to how Palutena likely will be since she's allowed online. I don't see why they wouldn't be allowed if that's the case.

It felt so bad I didn't even want to jump half the time honestly. Characters were moving very awkwardly in the air for everyone. The more I think about it the less I'm interested in returning on Saturday. Two locations in my area, the one I went to was too fucking crowded.

I'm sure people who never saw game and watch probably felt similar when he was revealed, as well. People are quick to have knee-jerk reactions. They're supposed to be the "WTF" character and invoke reactions like that. People will learn to love them.

Or they FGC could just decide on a standard moveset for the three Mii types. (Though that sounds boring to me personally.)

If the game gets enough of a competitive following, a standard moveset for the three would probably emerge on its own, so that's always possible.

If boring.

Aren't the custom movesets just choosing out of 3 choices per move? Don't see why that would be banned.

I think the concern is that it would take far too much time to setup for organizers, but if that ends up being super simple then it's probably fine.

The game felt closer to Brawl than Melee for me but it's faster than Brawl. I need more time with the game because I'm not used to the changes in this game. I'm having a hard time adjusting to ZSS's faster speed in this game jeez...

Agree with this. Also removal of dash dancing--or rather the ability to cancel a dash into a dash into the opposite direction--feels incredibly wrong. Not even trying to look at this in a long-term competitive sense, the game just felt bad to play. I did not feel like I had good control over my character.

But yeah, pretty game and megaman's final smash still got a lot of cheers haha. I'm really not feeling the game but glad other people are having fun with it.

Also is there a collection of impressions/new discoveries from the demo? I know we had a list of questions going.

Same here. I was planning to go on Saturday as well, but I don't think I will. I feel I played enough of the game to get a solid impression of how it compares to previous entries.

I was hoping for something new, but instead it turned out to be very similar to Brawl. Some of the characters felt faster than anyone in Brawl, such as ZSS and Greninja, but the attack cooldown / lag when landing hits or hitting the ground almost makes the game feel slower than Brawl.

It helps me, the Mii thing, to think that the Mii just got a whole bunch of custom moves. The models aren't drastically different, so it probably took a lot less effort than if two of the Mii movesets were, say, Dark Samus and Isaac instead.

so are we expecting the only newcomers that remain to be from the sal leak?

More likely since third rumor seem to emphasized those 3 more newcomers and Lucas being cut. I guess they are almost done with roster, but they said that they are planning for Character DLC tho.

I'm all for DLC!

I didn't have much fun. Part of it was the long-ass line, part of it was that it just felt weird (Like how you can't edge hog now), and part of it is that I feel like I'm just playing Brawl sped up. Played as Samus, and she's... Well, she's faster than Brawl, but everything's faster than Brawl.

Going again on Saturday, and gonna try and get there much earlier so I don't have to stay in line for so long.

Things can certainly change between now and the release date if the community actively voices their concerns, but the game's current state is a bit incongruous with Sakurai's statements a year ago.

He said he wanted to strike a balance between Melee and Brawl because he doesn't really feel that the franchise is "in a position to accommodate new players".

Yet, after what I experienced tonight, the game most certainly isn't a "balance" between Melee and Brawl....it's almost a carbon copy of the Brawl engine.

Again, I'm a "casual" player who doesn't know the difference between wavedashing and wave bouncing. I was hoping for a novel Smash game, not a clone of a previous entry (which turned out to be Brawl), especially after Sakurai's comments last year.

The leak seems plausible by now, but it paints a very incomplete picture. We have no idea what could have changed during development, and the nebulous possibility of DLC is another set of factors to consider.

Mew2King went on stage at the invitational, but security kicked him off :lol

LOL wow

aMSa apparently posted a bunch of his notes from playing the game on Twitter and someone translated them on reddit

One interesting tidbit from this is that edgehogging isn't completely gone.

"Stealing the ledge." No special command required. If another player is holding the ledge and you approach them from above, the other player will be forced to jump out and you will grab the ledge. It seems like you cannot steal the ledge if you are in a helpless animation after an up-B. Ledge invincibility does not change anything (?)

Read the bolded there. It means when you're in your special fall state after an Up B has ended, you can't steal the ledge -- the other player has effectively hogged the edge from you.

Still kind of nerfs edgehogging, though, but I guess they had to do it this way in order to stomp out ledge stalling from the game completely (ala Brawl + Meta Knight + Uair or Melee + Sheik + Up B).

The whole jump lag thing seems reaaaally shitty. This is something that hurts both competitive and casual play.

I hope they fix that, if not by the launch, at least patching it later.

I may get some hate for this but I'm kinda glad DI is kind of out...it felt more like a gimmick. I understand its importance, but...

Yeah I did, as a whole I had no problems outside of the shoulder buttons, felt really weird trying to guard with the triggers but by the end of my 2 minute match I was getting used to it. Had I gotten my promised second match (they cut everyone down to one match due to the massive turn out) I probably would have been good with it. I trained myself to be good with the Classic Controller Pro before the GC adapater was confirmed and that awkwardness I felt the first time I used that for Smash was how I felt today playing with the Pro Controller, but I imagine after 3-5 matches I'd be comfortable with it.

Nice. What I wanted to hear.

Regular DI isn't out, Smash DI is (to some extent apparently? Or, rather, it's possibly just really hard to do).

Oh, gotcha. Yeah I just saw again that it's just after being thrown that it doesn't seem like you can. Regular DI makes sense to me but I dunno about Smash DI.

Put my reaction to the demo over in the demo thread, but long story short I was only able to play a 2 minute match (despite getting there at 4 PM) due to them taking names about an hour later. I would have loved more time to get used to it, but as my brother and me both felt it was similar to Brawl with less floatiness and slight speed boost.

Which I'm OK with. I played a ton of characters in the air in Brawl, so it'll be nice to not have to do that completely but still have air moves that aren't just short hops. If the jumping mechanic everyone else is talking about is that bad though I would hope for a fix.

Back from Best Buy...

- They surprised us with the 3DS version before we played the Wii U version
- The Wii U version had Pro Controllers, our Nintendo lady was never given a GameCube Adapter
- Sonic has a sight arc jump in his Side B, & more knockback
- Sonic has a Silver alt (white w/ Silver's wristbands), as well as a purple shade with purple Chaos Emerald wristbands
- The Egg Robo (S&K Eggman decoy) & a Rhythm Heaven enemy are in Smash Run
- Magnus is an Assist Trophy

Any other questions?
