Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

Good news! I somehow got it sent to my really old PSP PSN account instead of my current PS4 account so just finding my old login info and stuff got me to the download.

Thanks for the help though guys <3

Welp I am a believer. This game is a lot of fun and there are so many smart touches. Like being able to look at a random player and invite him to your party. Looks gorgeous, the addictive drip of loot and XP has got some serious hooks. Weapons are fun, customizing your dude is deeeeeep, and melee is surprisingly rewarding. My warlock's bomb cool down is boosted by melee, so there is some risk reward to that.

Gotta stop thinking about it. Oh and the level cap is 8, and what do I just get? A level 9 pair of uncommon boots that double the defense of my current boots lol.

Seriously, those on the fence or were starting to lose hype for this really need to give this a chance. Find a friend and start exploring.

Yeah, not feeling this at all. Just a really bland experience so far. I'm gonna play more over the weekend to give it a fair shake, though. Some random thoughts:

The frame rate is dodgy. Yeah, I know it's alpha. I just can't stand sub 60 shooters.

The controls/movement seems kind of sluggish.

It's also hard for me to distinguish enemies from the background a lot of times. To be fair, I've always had this problem in an FPS.

Haven't seen any kind of drops other than ammo and health. Found some plants I could harvest. Crafting system?

The PvE seems pretty fun. Need to try the Strike still but I enjoyed running around the zone with my brother and knocking quests off. Though I would want to see some more hand crafted stuff instead of these seemingly random beacon quests. But there obviously be more for real quests like the intro one in the Alpha so that'll be cool.

Not really feeling the PvP right now. It just feels messy and random with everyone bringing their stuff in and the only actual stuff on the maps being ammo. The shooting is fine and the time to kill is kind of a midpoint between CoD and Halo, which I kind of like. But then I get bummed out when someone rounds a corner and just happens to have their super move charged and instantly kills you with no possible counter or warning.

The presentation is impeccable. Even seeing my username fade in on the character selection menu is impressive. Also, it's the first time someone makes me like flat design (I want some of these guys to make a computer OS). Bungie has some of the best designers in the industry.

This game looks very ambitious and next-gen. You can see where the money went.

They really do.

I sure hope the boys at the Bungie offices are reading this thread.

I don't like CoD style online FPS games where you run around a map waiting to find the next Left Trigger + Right Trigger moment that is over in two seconds at the most and that's definitely what the MP was. But I don't really know what I was expecting so it's hard to feel too bummed out.

So far the alpha has deflated my hype considerably but it's still above the line where I'm interested in buying the game. I have to see how the rest of the weekend changes my mind. Gonna play most of the weekend so who knows :-)

Impressions:

The game is nicely polished for an alpha. I bet it'll release on time.

It feels very similar to an improved Halo. In fact, everything they changed, they changed for the better. If you liked halo and you like leveling/gear and such, you will love this game.

If you are not a shootbang fan, this game is not going to change your mind. It's better than Halo, and it's very solid (as you'd expect) but definitely not revolutionary like Bungie would have us believe.

Metacritic score guess: 88% ;)

Ugh... 6.5 hours of error messages. Still wont connect to servers... welp. This was a bummer. Off to bed now, I really hope it works tomorrow :-(

Really enjoying this game. Exploring the world gives me all types of feels.

Had one public event pop up with only 2 of us there. Killed a few but had to eventually back away to avoid death and time ran out on us. I wonder if Bungie was watching and laughing at me :O

Loving how responsive the controls are and the game looks pretty nice. Knowing the game is in alpha, makes me look forward to what the visuals will be like at launch.

I didn't like the respawning enemies, every so often. That was kind of annoying. Its not like I go somewhere else and come back. I kill them all and literally turn my back, take one step forward and there they are all behind me again. That totally breaks the immersion you get out of exploration.

Framerate is steady. Out of a 3 hour session, I maybe noticed a slight drop once or twice but for the most part its rock solid 30. Which leads me to the only true crime of Destiny, the fact that its 30fps. The game would really be something beautiful at 60fps.

Overall, im pleased with the game's direction. Its looking like a possible day one. If they can get it at 60, it'd be a definite day one.

Edit: the cursor style UI leads me to believe that this will be coming out on PC, someday.

I will say now that I have a better understanding of this game. How expansive the final game is will probably be the make or break deal for me. How many free roam zones are there? How many strikes? How many story missions? How many competitive maps? Etc. The Alpha seems like such a tease and leaves you wanting, a good thing, so I am hopefully given the time and money put into this that there is going to be a lot to see and do.

Got 2 emails with 2 different codes, EU account, even though I applied for code only once. Is there any challenging co-op content in Alpha, like dungeons/raids? If so, I will probably just gonna give that code to my buddy and long time Halo/Bungie fan to play together. Are codes even tied to accounts or anyone can redeem them?

strike mission includes 2 bosses.

Stupid question, but how do you melee? I've been having fun playing for the past couple of hours, but I still haven't been able to do it.

I can't log out, anyone else having this problem? If so, i'll report it tomorrow.

Only option I have to quit the game is to hold the ps button and close application.

I just played for about an hour doing that first mission. My initial impressions below:

-I though the creation tool was pretty cool, though I can imagine the lack of customization options may lead to a lot of "samey" looking characters.

-The first mission was definitely meant to be played with friends (I don't think anyone on my friends list has access to the alpha).

-The visuals look okay to pretty good. I really like the art-style, though.

-The gun-play feels very good, in my opinion. Be way I can describe it is Halo of Duty.

-I wonder if the enemy count scales when more players are participating. Although I never quite felt overwhelmed, there were plenty of baddies to keep me busy.

-Speaking of the enemies, they're pretty dumb. They don't strategize all that much beside retreating behind cover and rushing you when they're close. I'd like to see them flank more and pressure my position. I felt like it was fairly easy and straightforward to outsmart them.

-I think the open world is interesting. I didn't get to investigate every nook and cranny, but it kept my attention.

-Indoor sections are appropriately creepy. Going at it alone definitely made me more cautious.

-The "boss" at the mission wasn't anything to write home about. I think it may have just been one of the stronger enemies with a yellow health-bar. I ran into an "Elder" in the open world and it had a similar health-bar.

Overall, I think it felt like a very polished alpha. I didn't love the load times from orbit to wherever your destination is, but I think that's something that can be ironed out. I also hope they work on getting the player to understand the nuances of the experience and upgrade system. My PSN is: rich7sena if anyone wants to explore tomorrow (US, EST).

Yeah, fuck that strike mission. Slogged through those bosses. Then we finally got to the sphere boss. We must have spent 20 minutes to get it to half health. Then we died. And sphere boss back to full health.

I turned off my ps4.

This is the only problem I had with the alpha, but then again it made you really work for the win.

My team had a harder time with the devil walker and its bullshit 1 hit laser kills. That boss we definitely spent an hour+ on since we all died.

So does anyone know how you're supposed to kill the Devil Walker in this Strike mission?
I'm guessing you pour as many bullets as you can into it and use supers if possible. I think legs are a weak point and when it falls go ape shit when its core opens up.

Man now I get it. The upgrade system is definitely more of an rpg setup than even borderlands I think I was expecting halo! Now that I've wrapped my head around it and understand the loot I really see the potential. Hopefully the graphics will improve and you can pick up the aliens weapons by launch.

Loving the game so far, played about three hours and finished the Strike, but got some cool level 9 gear as a reward :(.

Having a strange issue - I've run into plenty of other players in free roam mode and had no trouble matchmaking a team for the Strike, but the Tower has been completely empty all three times I've visited. Feels really lonely.

Anyone that wants to add me to their PSN friends list, feel free:

I thought it was hilarious Bungie gave level 9 items when the cap is 8. :(

My only gripe right now is they really need to tone down those bosses, unless I was doing something wrong.

I played for about an hour today before a massive thunderstorm came through with tornado warnings. Yup.

Overall, I think the graphics are gorgeous. Screenshots and YouTube don't do it justice.
The interface and how you interact with is different than what else is out there, kinda like a mouse cursor. The controls are pretty responsive but I wasn't able to figure out how to perform the Titan classes first special attack, maybe unlocked at later level?

The enemies are plentiful and leveling up does seem to take awhile, getting to level 15 may take sometime. The first mission is interesting and the new enemy surprised me at first but they were fun to fight.

The Tower is a pretty interesting place and you control it in third-person rather than the typical first-person.

I did meet one player who stood around shot something then left. Hope I can play more tomorrow.
