Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

Why the fuck are they even in there. Must be hiding something good.

I ran all around that area they are in and couldn't find anything. There's a small room on the opposite side of the room they are in and if you get inside, they wont' follow but there was jack squat in it. Then I sprinted full speed all around that dark room they inhabit and didn't notice anything... Maybe some chest will materialize if you kill them all but pretty confident that's not possible in the Alpha since we're stuck at lvl 8.

Its to obviously block players from going where they are not supposed to in the alpha. A much more simple solution than having to rework the map to include invisible borders to fence off areas.

One question in particular has been really bugging me.

How big is Destiny?

We saw on the Map, Earth, The Tower, The Moon, Mars, Venus, The Reef, Vanguard, and Crucible. Id the entire game really 5 zones, PvP, and a hub? Will they all be the same size as Old Russia? Are those four story markings we see on the Old Russia map all the story in that zone? Will they all be as sparsely littered with oft-repeated missions?

Just before you round the corner with the broken glass windows, I saw a chest in the ceiling but I couldn't work out a way to get to it.

I'm not even sure if it's always there though, they seem to be random?

Kind of a waste. Maybe it'll open up in the beta. Well, if the beta has the same stuff in it.

Just barely started, went into some large building with a large dish and found "The Hive", there was this mage enemy there that the mission wants me to kill but I can barely make a dent in its health. I have tried over and over again and nothing. Am I going the right way or do I just suck.

Man Im kinda letdown with how "weak" the hunters special is in comparison to the other 2 classes.

Since truthfully that "magic" pistol sucks lol

Ammo/Loot drops need to be more noticeable on the ground.

would be nice if you brought up the ghost it would make markers appear over where pickups are. Sorta like holding down the alt? key was it in diablo showing where items were.

The first sniper rifle I found did more damage than the special.

It really is 3 shots of a whole lotta nothing. I mean sure you might be able to rip off shields in 2 shots but still the last shot isnt a surefire kill on target even if tagged in the head. Its seriously lackluster in comparison. Thats the only thing I dont like about the hunter class.

Roam around some and grind a bit or link up with another player

It's one shot kill and ranged, so just a very different beast to the others which have a single blast radius type thing. Haven't used it myself, but seem players cleaning up with it.

Loving the movement of the Warlock. Jumping is more crouching tiger than halo jet packs. PvP in general is amazing.

Its not really 1 shot kill on certain enemy types. Shooting scrubs sure, but why are you wasting shots from that weapon on scrubs? Have not done any PVP. Go use the thing you will see what us hunters are talking about. Its not all that useful.

So yeah, this game is goooooood. But holy fucking bullet sponge Batman. Devil's Lair is no joke. The enemies in this game do a shit load of damage and take a lot to bring them down. We were thinking about playing on Legend, until I saw the weapon and armor debuffs.....NOPE! Even on Brave it was hard. They need to tone it down a bit. I don't mind dying or trial and error, but not at this magnitude. I'll give it another go sometime today.

I think its more we just need to get better gear to level the damage output. I went through there also, but was thinking to myself yeah am not properly equipped for this. But if your team is split up enough to keep the fire going in different directions its not as bad.

Fantastic game though really am impressed and the weapon handling feels right, though sometimes the autoaim makes it a bit too easy since it seriously loves to headhunt. lol

Cross-posting from the clan forum, mainly to take advantage while I have the TV to myself :)

If anybody would like to play, please feel free to add me. But bear in mind I am a 30 y.o. female, so if you are a 15 y.o. boy, it might be a bit weird.

- Peter Dinklage
His voice has no character to it, it's so flat it's painful.

It's hard to know how the character was written and how much of the blame for any kind of below-the-bar performance should be directed towards whoever was directing the VA.
But then again, the Alpha is only a small slice - so it's hard to condemn anyone based on the few lines he's got here. In the E3 2013 demo for example, he showed a lot more sass.

Not quite on the level of Kevin Spacey as GERTY in Moon as far as AI companions go (based on a few lines, anyway), but I'll take it.

Sorry, yeah I was talking just about PvP

I have no problem with it - deals a shit ton of damage to boss types when you crit x3.
And it's great in PvP though I forget to use it too often lol

Oh I shouldn't think they'd mind too much.

Dang...put in a total of 7 hours...only made it to middle of level 7. I suck.

Still, buying my PS4 early was worth it. I'm going to use the next two days to get better at PVP.

I've been gaming for over 20 years and this is the first time I've playing FPS pvp. Before that, simulation sickness limited me to 3rd person Uncharted multiplayer titles and MMOs (third person)

I think Destiny is going to be worth a little headache and upset stomach.

Me likey.

Yeah, this game pretty much rocks.

Confirmed buy 100% right now.

Will probably get an extra PS4 just to be able to co-op with a friend.
Amazeatron.

That magic pistol isn't weak at all, you can use it to dispatch a heavy armored vehicle with ease, or get three easy kills and destroy the turrets pinning down the flags. I am loving the hunter so far. I played about 6.5 hours of crucible and 2 hours of PvE. I am loving this game to death. September couldn't get here fast enough. That voice acting definitely needs some work though.

What would you suggest? I'm not really sure how they're going to get any faster than a button press. I mean, I guess they could map it to a different button, but I feel like the touchpad depresses at almost exactly the same rate as all of the other buttons on the DS4.
Double-tap touchpad to bring up ghost?

Damn, this game is addictive in almost the same way an MMO is.

Cleared the Strike mission on Legend with my Titan, started him earlier today and geared him to the teeth. Joined a random mission with 2 other people, we all kinda knew what we were doing because we had obviously cleared the fight before on the easier difficulty. Didn't take us nearly as long as I might have guessed, I guess anybody even trying Legend is actually gearing up first and also Titans can actually take a hit pretty well.

I have a feeling this is gonna turn into one giant grind fest. I didn't really enjoy the missions all that much. From what I played it was; go there and see what there is while killing this. Another mission was a fetch quest. I do like the exploration and the looting bit, that's fun. But as I said, I'm not gonna play a game which builds on fetch quests and grinding.

I'll wait for the reviews.

Not feeling the PVP at all. But PVE is very much awesome.

- Bosses have way too much health. It took me 20 minutes to destroy the spider tank... And if you die you got to do the 20 minutes again.

Exactly how I feel about it.

It feels unbelievably grindy until level 6. The bosses are just ridiculous. PVP didn't float my boat at all, very unbalanced.

Oh, and it should balance strike missions like FFXIV so you don't end up with 3 scouts or whatever. The horde bits are unbelievably unforgiving.

My Impressions

Overall:
Good:
  • - it is ton of fun
  • - free roaming
  • -artdirection and IQ
  • -enemy design
  • - long time motivation with all the loot
  • - Strikes are awesome, but too generic
  • - Weaponfeel

Bad:
  • - too few lootdrops
  • - no sound option and language option
  • - no ADS sensibility option
  • - to much ADS
  • - hipfire not accurate enough especially snipers ( more Halo would be good here)
  • - to repetitive
  • - no chat with other people unless you invite them
  • - Hunter too weak
  • - AUTOAIM ( just turn that shit off for everyone)
  • - Bosses are just bulletsponges

All the stuff goes for PVP too but here some PVP
Good
  • -Mapdesign
  • -Teamsizes
  • -EVERY Weapon does the same damage in the same weapon class ( LOOT IS NOT IMPORTANT )
  • - Super are soo cool and it is very Strategic
  • - the ammo solution is great
  • - agility

  • - ALL verhilces beside Sparrow ( everything that can shoot is a nogo for me)
  • - Turrents must be gone
  • - no chat
  • - Autoaim
  • - Hunter way to weak, Titan a lot more Armor
  • - make hipfire Halo like
  • - PLEASE go with 60 fps in PVP !! ( technical it must be not that hard)
  • - sometime weird Hitdetection
  • - ADS sensibility !!!
  • - Radar could be more precise

Maybe I will have some more ;)

Really don't think this is the game for me, but it's pretty fun all the same. I don't know if I'm missing something, but things seem awfully repetitive once you get back down to Old Russia after visiting the moon base thing. Do you just potter around doing missions from beacons or is there more 'story'-ish content? Because I did like ten of the beacon missions and they were all either 'Go here and kill this guy' or 'Go here and hold Square on this thing', and when I got two identical ones in a row (going all the way through that building with the radar dish from the first mission) I called it a night. I did see a couple of those random events, one protecting a crashed satellite for four minutes and another to take out a chubby spider mech that was dropped in, but blazing away with my primary weapon and waiting for the grenade cooldown to finish was getting a bit tedious.

So, I don't know, I've never been much of a co-op guy so this probably isn't for me. Trekking back and forth through that level with the enemies respawning constantly didn't really do it for me. The shooting feels really good, but when you can't just pick up the guns your enemies were using it gets boring pretty quickly. I know you can't really judge a Borderlands-ish loot-lust sort of game on the first few levels before you find any really interesting weapons, but that's all this alpha really is. Ironically, the switch to infinite randomly-generated weapons actually seems to give you less variety than what you'd get in a Halo game, at least from the few hours I played. I saw regular assault rifles, 3-round burst ones and single shot ones, and all the secondaries I found were just shotguns. I was getting into situations where I really needed something to take down shields or whatever the yellow-health-bar guys had, but I didn't have anything like that... so I just shot them a bunch. And the grenade and special moves take so long to recharge it seems crazy. Didn't exactly light my soul on fire, y'know?

But then, I'm not typically an FPS or MMO fan, and I'm relatively immune to the Diablo style of loot lust, so maybe I'm just not the target audience.

Great, great game. Aside from the lack of loot (which I have no strong opinions about currently), the main issues I have are with Dinklage's craptacular voice acting (some of the worst shit I've heard) and the frame judder which is hugely noticeable.

This is a definite purchase otherwise!

There's only one story mission in the Alpha, and even that slice seems like two checkpoints of a mission.
I'd expect the completing campaign to give you enough XP to get close to the level cap. Whether or not the campaign mixes things up more than the dozen short missions that seem like dailies straight out of WoW in their structure remains to be seen - but I don't feel like the Halo games lacked for variety in their campaigns.

Endgame might end up grindey - but we really don't know that until the game's out.

Truthfully if you want to hit things dont fire from the hip. You add accuracy to hipfire then all you have is people not using ADS. Seriously hate games that make firing from the hip have any sort of accuracy. And when I say HATE I mean HATE. Not this namby pamby hurt feelings kinda "dislike" as a replacement for HATE.

I posted some opinions previously, and they were pretty negative. Since it's free to try at this point, I poured about four more hours into Destiny today, doing random missions, the Strike and PvP.

After about five hours, I think I'm finally starting to understand this game. If your initial impressions were as bad as mine, then give the game some more time, and definitely group up with others. This game is meant to be played with others. No question. For anyone on the fence, having friends to play with makes the game instantly better. I only played with randoms, none of whom used mics, but it was instantly more enjoyable once I grouped up. Playing this game solo is going to create a fundamentally bad experience. Don't even bother trying.

Despite this, Bungie make the mistake of setting the roster default to "Friends" only. Change your roster to "Public". The game instantly becomes better being able to group up with randoms. Its also worth noting that the game is experiencing bugs where you won't be able to see other people at all, so using this Alpha as a metric for the final game won't work if you're encountering the bug.

Anyway, Destiny is a lot better now that I've spent more time with it. Approaching it as a "shooter" is the wrong way to play. Its an MMO first and foremost, and has its own unique style. Once you approach it correctly, and play it as an MMO, things start to click together, and Destiny starts to work. It takes a while to find the groove.

Combat is simply a mix of ducking out from cover, using the environment to break LOS, ducking into cover when you need to reload, and timing the pauses in combat to recharge your shield. Its less about your speed and skill with shooting, and more about tactics and gear. Forget what you think you know: the usual FPS plays simply don't work here. Circle-strafe is all but worthless unless there's only one enemy. Jump-shoot is almost entirely ineffective. Sprint-reload doesn't work. A liberal mix of ADS and from-hip is needed, to keep your mobility high.

Also, the "Boss Health" issue isn't an issue with the Bosses, strangely enough. It's a weapon issue. Most players simply do not have Heavy Weapons, which deal massive amounts of damage to the Boss' weak spots (give yellow damage). The Spider Tank takes around 25 minutes to kill without Heavy Weapons. Its a fucking joke. In my second play of the Strike, I had a Heavy Weapon, though my two buddies didn't. A typical RPG kinda weapon. This time, we did it in about 7 minutes. Heavy Weapons, man. If you have a Heavy Weapon, hold Triangle to actually use it, rather than just pressing triangle. They also make facing off against those Knights and Captains with Shields much easier, due to their massive damage.

The PVP is kind of shit right now, frankly. Not responsive enough, even by Bungie's standards. The balance is fucked, too. Players don't begin with Heavy Weapon ammunition. This means vehicles rule the map. Whoever has the better pilots, wins. No contest. They really need to fix this, makes it virtually unplayable.
Also relying on your PvE gear is terrible. Weapons seem to do the same damage in a class, ignoring their stats. I imagine players will have PvP and PvE sets of gear. I hope Bungie add an "auto-equip PVP Gear" thing, because it'll get really fucking tiring swapping sets out. Trying to use a semi-auto rifle in PVP is impossible, whereas a simple shotgun is a fucking killing machine. Horribly unfair.

My earlier comments about the sterile world and lack of story still stand. The game lacks any and all context, and the world is utterly empty of anything relating to story. I'm not just talking about the Alpha, either. I mean the world is just... empty. Enemies are just there. Building have little in the way of context or purpose. Even the Strike failed to tell anything resembling a story. Its really, really weak, and what is there is horribly boring and generic. Disappointing on all fronts.

Overall, though, my opinion has improved dramatically with more time. Learn to play it the way Bungie designed it, instead of like a normal shooter, and it gets a lot better. It's not all good, though. Bungie's terrible story telling, mixed with Peter Dinklage's character, nearly ruins the entire game. There's just so little to actually see in Destiny that its really hard to push on without the progression. Having hit the level cap, I'm done with Destiny till the beta - there's nothing worth revisiting for the sake of it.

I won't be pre-ordering, and I'll wait for the beta before making a purchase decision. The story telling needs to pick up A LOT and the PVP multiplayer almost needs a fundamental re-do before this would be an instant purchase. Its alpha though, so there's time for them to address all of the issues. I hope they do, its very interesting, and has lots of potential.

I didn't register anywhere, but they still send me a code to my PS+ account (EU).
Oh well, got to try the game but I'm not convinced. It's fun and actually pretty great, but it feels grindy and the stronger enemies take so much damage, it's not fun to shoot at a normal sized enemy for 3 minutes with 3 people.
Love the design/artstyle/skyboxes though.

btw is there are way to remove shields quickly? Seems like that takes the longest while afterwards the enemy's health can even be one-shoted.

Another thing, this is obviously a coop game but what can I do to actually support other players besides reviving them? Are there some abilities or whatever to give ammo/shields etc.? Feels weird otherwise.

oh and I also don't like that only your currently equipped secondary weapon gets ammo. I like to switch between a sniper rifle and a shotgun etc. based on the location, but then the other weapon will start out with 0 ammo... (not to mention that I think the secondary ammo that you can carry is too low. Sure, maybe change with leveling up etc.)

Have got a few hours in and game is excellent, very promising. It better come to PC, gah.

Both big enemies in the Strike mission were a bit of a slog, but i'd put that down to other people being underleveled/weak/bad and lacking heavy weapons ammo. Another left after failing the second one, got a new guy and it went way faster.

Trying a hunter now. The flame pistol is fucking insane, tutorial boss down in 3 shots.

Exactly.

Destiny even more so then halo seems to be about movement. Don't give us all that lovely new ways to move and then force us to stand still!!!

The Spider Tank can be killed very quickly with ordinary weapons if your group knows to focus fire on a leg, and then shoot the exposed core when it falls down. You don't need to use Heavy Weapons for it and the groups I've been in all have not bothered on that boss.

To kill the Knights and Captains, aim for the head. Every shot should be towards the head. This game dramatically rewards headhunting, you do yellow damage to the head and many times it's a several times multiple of what you do to the body. On the Hive Knights in particular, shooting the body does almost nothing, shooting the head is graphically more effective. The Captains are the same way, shooting their heads makes their shields drop much faster. Other mobs which are Elder versions and have yellow HP bars instead of red ones, again same deal, shoot the head to kill them quickly or shoot the body and empty a whole clip into them to do nothing. The Auto Rifles are nice for PvP, put them away in PvE and use the Pulse Rifles and Scout Rifles so you can headshot more effectively. Also Sniper Rifles are your best friend in PvE, they are wonderful for doing big damage on the bosses if you're out of Heavy Weapon ammo and you are out. Right now. Seriously.

Played the first hour solo in free-roaming and i was fuckin hating it
Started the first co-op mission and the game started to shine

How many of myfriends will get the game is gonna decide if i buy it or not, it just doesn't work solo

Really? I tried that - shooting the exposed core - didn't do any additional damage. I must have been doing something wrong. In any case, my RPG make light work of it, and made the end boss of the Strike enjoyable, which didn't seem to have a weak point apart for the center of its face-side.

Played one minute. Threw a grenade in the water and the game crashed as it hit the water. This is definitely an Alpha. Will try again later.
