Digital Foundry Tech Analysis: Destiny alpha on PS4

How did you manage to play games last gen?

this is getting ridiculous.
30fps is acceptable in certain genres, but fighting games, FPS, racing, and character action games, I need a smooth frame rate with responsive controls.

Because of this, I have to play many of these games on PC. Destiny was a game I was mildly interested in, but the more I see of it, the less appealing it becomes.

The low FOV, gigantic gun models, tanky controls, and awkward animations all contribute to that. I have yet to buy a PS4, but I can surely look past Destiny as a game to consider when I do get one unless the 30fps cap changes between now and launch.

Well I've played the alpha and it's great fun. The controls aren't tanky, 30fps really isn't the end of the world, the FOV is no worse than any other console shooter and yes the animations aren't fantastic but you're having too much fun to notice. Graphically the game isn't anything special and that really doesn't matter as much as you might think because the gameplay is really solid.

It does sound like you're too used to playing on PC to really enjoy pretty much any console shooter.

People complaining about the graphics: have you played the alpha?

It doesn't look like a cross-gen game at all, it looks stunning and I can't wait to explore more areas.

Not that we can get consistent 60fps on PC anyways. I remember my 7970 getting wild swings of 35-120 on BF4. Watchdogs is also another difficult one.

Yeah I've played the alpha and it is not a bad looking game. The character models in the creation looks good but the environments doesn't that good in my eyes. The number of people saying how good it looks has made me question my own eyes and pay more attention to visuals while playing but I'm just not seeing anything "stunning".

Both of those games were pretty poorly optimized. And if a game is having drops, you can always turn the settings down to improve it. Native res and 60+fps are the two most important things for me when it comes to graphics/performance in games. There are tons of shooters on the market, so I will just play the ones that meet those requirements.

Those character models look amazing, it's a shame the actual in-game faces look nothing like that.

Y'know while 60fps is most definitely preferred in all games tbh, I never had a problem with the Halo games back in the day. I can live with it, as long as theres no dips. Just about.

Is Watch Dogs poorly optimized? Because a poorly optimized game will run shit no matter the settings and rig. WD just needs super high spec'd pc to run. My 670/3570k can just play it at 1440p in 30fps, I will not tone down the effects to the point it looks like a ps2 game to have it at 60fps.

Forget WD, I can't even get consistent 60fps in System Shock 2 which is 15 years old. It's not the only game that has sudden random fps drops.

Are you playing the alpha?

No, unfortunately. I've got it on pre-order though incase it does turn out good. I've got my beta code waiting...

I've only seen what Bungie have shown and unfortunately it looks a bit like Borderlands but with no personality whatsoever. Borderlands was fun even when playing on your own. I'll want to do that in this game.

Sounds like the mk8 issue, only that the frame is repeated three times? Wonder why this happens, even when they opted for 30fps

Looking forward to trying the alpha and seeing what this is like for myself. Lag tends to be a bigger problem for me in online games. Not seen anyone mentioning lag so I assume it's all good.

You will be pleasantly surprised come beta, because all the doubters that got into the alpha are sold on the game. It's really fun playing on your own, I was a solo player too in Borderlands but unlike BL joining someone else is really seamless.

I think it looks okay, but it certainly looks like a HD port of a PS360 game. It's the first time I've played a game and felt it was drastically hurt by being cross-gen. Everything feels so inert and barren. It's pretty disappointing presentation wise.

This being x-gen is one of the most disappointing things in recent memory. It is more the gameplay limitations as grfx aren't a big deal to me, 720p solid 30fps is all I need.

Ever since reading the Naughty Dog lamentations of how they had to butcher their AI to fit on 256/256 memory architecture, I've come to appreciate just how limiting last gen is.

I think Destiny will be a good game, but that is all--kind of like Titanfall. I really think if either Titanfall or Destiny was full on next gen, their impact would have been much greater.

All the fun talk reminds me a lot of what people were saying about Titanfall. I don't think fun is enough to fulfill Activision's ambitions.

I'll be really interested to see how the player counts are 6 months after launch.

I think it looks pretty good, 60fps would be a gofsend for this game though

Would really like to try this with the XBO controller too before deciding wich version i'll get, got friends waiting to co-op with me there but i'm really loving the DS4 analogs

Personally I think it was a mistake to support the X360 and PS3 but Activision can't let go of that large install base. I'd rather to have PC support instead but who am I.

Cross-gen? Can PS3/360 handle it? (And yes, I'm serious--I have no idea about tech.)

It's virtually no more expensive than FXAA:

That's a difference of about 5%.

Just wanna chime in here from the Alpha: playing the Alpha solo was the worst thing I've played on my PS4. Its not like Borderlands at all, where you can still play it solo and enjoy it for the action, loot, story and humour. Solo-play Destiny is boring, and not very fun. The game has little story, and what it does have is terribly executed. It doesn't play like a normal FPS, far too slow, so you have to play it like a typical group-based MMO. In a group, the game is really quite fun, infinitely better than playing on your own, and you don't mind the lack of story at all with others to play with. I was a doubter, and the alpha has convinced me to wait for the beta, but yeah, don't get Destiny if you're intending to play on your own - you'll hate it.

Can't agree more with this

Played the first hour solo in free roam and i was hating it, as soon as i started the first co-op mission and the multiplayer the truly changed and became fun as hell

Looks good in the build we are playing now. Wouldn't mind seeing a few more of the missing effects.

Tesselation
Improved AA and AF
Some OBMB would be great
Maybe a slight super sample for PS4 like the Lego games?

Overall though it looks great for a cross gen game.

Interested to see the DF head 2 head since it is 1080p@30fos on XBO and PS4, hopefully they don't neglect the extra horsepower.

they should not be judging an Alpha, It's early and its expected to be rough.

This alpha is the best thing so far to form an opinion of. If we shouldn't say anything about the aspects that people find negative just from this alpha, then should we also withold any positive opinions as well if this alpha is insufficient to form an opinion of? They decided to present us with this. Of course we should be allowed to judge what we are playing. Wouldn't Bungie benefit from constructive feedback from this to make the end product even better? Technically I find the game disappointing but I have to say that the more I play it the more I like it, although I'm still not completely sold on it.

It shows 60 fps, but only 30 unique ones, some are shown 3 times some only once.
Right, so you essentially always get 30fps in 60 seconds, but rather than every frame being present for exactly 2 refreshes, some get 3 and the next gets one? Not really a smooth 30fps then. Plenty of time to optimise tho. Presumably that "one refresh" frame, or the one after it, are at a reduced resolution or level of fx to get back under the 33ms rendering budget ?

Really silly to try and judge the story from an alpha that starts you at level 3 with no context or tutorial.

I expect the final game to have plenty of story and lore.

I hope so. I do wonder where the 'fun' is though. The gunplay and environments just don't do anything for me (based on what I've seen so far). I've heard its a bit more twitchy than Halo.

So that's why I thought the framerate wasn't a smooth 30. Interesting.

agreed, I also felt something wrong with the game and I posted in the other thread. I didn't know what it was. but I was thinking either frames not smooth or something to do with the animation needing to be a lil speed up. but I guess It was the frames.

Not at all. The world itself is devoid of context and purpose. Entirely. The Strike, for example, doesn't attempt to tell any kind of narrative with its structure. There's nothing in the world to demonstrate purpose, or provide a history or interesting narrative. It's entirely reliant on narration from Dinklage. Borderlands, for example, tells little stories through its dungeons; there are physical story clues throughout the world to help piece things together if you pay attention. There's also little discoverable scenes of objects, laid out to tell some kind of story. Destiny is devoid of anything. And what little story we do get to see is terrible. Peter Dinklage's voice acting is atrocious, and the dialogue is horrendous. "That Wizard must be from the Moon." Ugh.

My main complaint for the visuals that I hope is fixed by release is the frame-rate judder. I notice it every time it happens in the alpha.

The game looks good overall and sometimes it looks great. The lighting in some sections is really good. And I love that the flashlight your ghost gives you in the dark, casts shadows on the environment. People dogging the game because it's 30fps should play the beta next month if they can't get in the alpha. The controls are very responsive and pulling off headshots is easy. Oh, and shame about the use of FXAA. SMAA needs to become the norm, not FXAA. Infamous and Ryse's IQ is top notch.

Wasn't object motion blur also missing from the halo reach beta? I expect it to be in the full game.

Hao Reach actually does not have an object motionblur, Digital Foundry confuses the effects of screen motionblur on edge screen polygons to be object motionblur quite often. They did this in their halo reach analysis.

That's... a Titan 6GB SLI

I could show similar percentages with a GTX 570- to a 7850. The percentage difference is minimal in performance.

I think it looks beautiful on a big screen, and I haven't run into any issues with performance myself.
It's a bit baffling to see POM absent on a lot of these games that have featured it in their initial demos. Watch_Dogs, Destiny. Hopefully they will be able to utilize the effect on consoles in time.
