Digital Foundry Tech Analysis: Destiny alpha on PS4

wrong. the joy of video games is seeing your inputs represented onscreen. if something gets in the way of this, like a less-than-ideal framerate, then you better believe my enjoyment is diminished.
Maybe it's time for a new hobby? You should try kayaking or biking maybe.

Yet another PS4 game without tesselation. Was Sony's "DX11 emulation" snake oil, or is something else going on here?

Would love to be proven wrong.

The frame pacing issue is interesting after the last few months of people saying that console games have perfect frame pacing which is why their 30fps looks so good.

They could be doing some with the scale of their encounters that couldn't be possible with 60fps. Just because it's 30 doesn't automatically mean it's "last-gen."

i expected more out of bungie's next gen debut. they're planning on releasing several more of these - do you think any of those will hit 60?

imo, "the scale of their encounters" doesn't excuse the fact that the gameplay feels more sluggish than battlefield or CoD. for a first person shooter, 60 should be the standard.

It is definitely missing effects apparent in trailers and the E3 2013 gameplay demo.

Being Alpha I expect another layer of polish before release, possibly for the beta.

This isn't alpha and it's almost out of beta. It's three months from release, which means it's a little more than two months from going gold. What you see is what you're going to get.

When a big game releases early builds as "alpha" and "beta" three months from release, they aren't alpha and it's a highly polished, selective beta that is being sent out.

Games fun as hell but to me it's the worst looking next gen Aaa game so far. I'll blame that on cross gen. Hopefully thing improve out of Alpha.

I think it looks okay, but it certainly looks like a HD port of a PS360 game. It's the first time I've played a game and felt it was drastically hurt by being cross-gen. Everything feels so inert and barren. It's pretty disappointing presentation wise.

And its so unfortunate too that they don't stop hamstringing these games and let them fully shine on next gen systems. I understand the business side of things, considering the installed based of previous gen systems, but it would be have been incredible if they focused completely on developing for current gen hardware

This is literally the opposite of what everyone else who has played the alpha has said.

I'm impressed with it, I was expecting a lot more hiccups and snags for an early release build, and a lot more menu or interaction issues for Bungie's first open world RPG. The art direction carries the visuals heavily and the engine is coping well so far. I'm pretty much sold on it after not really caring much beforehand.

I'm glad Bungie didn't follow this philosophy with Halo 3, otherwise we wouldn't have gotten those Scarab battles.

Nothing in the article on FOV. God damn it.

I like the game itself but I'd rather wait for a PC version where I can adjust the FOV and get 60FPS. I still can't believe Destiny isn't on PC. It's basically PC Gaming: The Game.

A PC version that's not coming

I played it... solid 1080p@30fps... the only disappointment is the FXAA that makes the imagine a little blurry sometimes.

The game will be the next big thing in the industry.. and it delivers.

A PC version that's not coming

A PC version will be announced within a year of the console launch. Acti is banking on Destiny to become a pillar franchise and limiting its availability, especially considering its MMOesque nature, is incongruous to this goal.

I think Destiny is really lacking visually, frankly. Really just feels like a higher resolution last-gen game - which, I suspect it is, ultimately. The realtime lighting and self-shadowing are nice, but everything else is serviceable at best. Glad to hear the FPS hiccups are just pacing problems, hopefully they can clear that up.

Welcome to this gen!

It's going to be a looooong ride :(

I was honestly more surprised at little things like the towers not swaying when a ship warped in. That and dust no longer kicks up. It was a cool effect they must've had to take out because of performance issues.

Here is the section from the E3 2013 demo "recreated" in the alpha.

Obviously you don't get the story bits, so its missing Ghost turning on the lights, enemy locations, and the dramatic ship entry at the end.

However it is a good example of how in tact the graphics, in particular the awesome lighting is.

After watching this again, the IQ and framerate seems to have been downgraded in certain areas.

After watching BigTnaples video, I disagree.

I haven't been really paying any attention, but has there been any 360/PS3 footage anywhere for comparison?

It has the same shitty AA as ACIV, meaning the outlines of things shimmer when the camera is panned. I really fucking hate this, it is my biggest gripe by far, mainly because it is so rare to see so clearly on my TV. I can count the games that have it this bad that I have played on one hand. Hope they sort that out for the beta and final game.

This I like, I am not looking at the damn lines
Iook at how clear it makes everyhing look. I said it before I hate blurry games.

I highly doubt we'll see much footage of anything other than ps4 until launch. I'm assuming the last gen versions are pretty butchered considering the scale of the game but who knows what magic Bungie might be able to pull out to make them decent.

Are people really expecting every cross-gen game to be 60fps on next-gen? Destiny looks absolutely amazing, there's tons of micro-detail in the world, with sometimes crazy texture quality (the rust on all of the cars) and an awesome lightning system, all in an open world.

There's no way I could see this running at 60fps without major cutbacks to the graphical fidelity. And Bungie's shooters have all been just fine at 30fps.

Frame pacing issues sound weird. Is it purely a glitch, or is the game doing this in lieu of tearing when a single frame is taking too long?

This is pretty nice looking and running for an alpha, especially after trying Divinity which I presume is more of a true alpha (extremely basic menus that got replaced in the beta, atrocious load times, rough performance) that all got ironed out in the beta. I actually feel like what this is a real alpha test for are the SERVERS, because I'm definitely getting some weird hangups due to lag that I assume/hope will be squashed out more or less when development is completed.

You will be pleasantly surprised come beta, because all the doubters that got into the alpha are sold on the game. It's really fun playing on your own, I was a solo player too in Borderlands but unlike BL joining someone else is really seamless.

A bit generalised as I'm really not. There's too many bullet spongy enemies and the lack of smoothness is really off putting. I'm also concerned about the variety of the missions because in all the gameplay demos, it's been pretty much the same thing as we're playing now, just with a different backdrop.

It has its moments though and kitting up your character can be fun, but unless the beta changes things, it's a bargain bin game for me.

Lol I think some people in this thread need frickin glasses.

Graphically this game is damn stunning. Lovely high res textures pretty much everywhere, insane level of detail from rutst to the alien spores on a wall, absolutely marvelous lighting.

Destiny is a marvel to behold.

/disappointed

Where is all this 1080p 60fps we were supposed to be getting this 8th Gen ?

On PC, same where it was last-gen. Console games always need to make compromises, 1008p/60fps + open world really isn't possible without giving something else up.
