Digital Foundry: Switch 2 vs PS4 - Elden Ring, Hogwarts Legacy, Final Fantasy 7 Remake + More

Guys I have one question. Do you think those developers showed docked or handheld versions of their games? What version do you think a sane publisher would show? The worst looking, or the best looking?

They had their games docked and undocked in the show floor. Obviously for trailers they are going to show the docked version.

Is it possible DLSS games require an additional download for higher resolution textures?
Not really. High-res textures and DLSS are completely separate. Besides, are optional high-res textures on consoles even a thing? As far as I'm aware, you always get the optimal textures for the hardware. It's PC that sometimes has 70GB texture packs for high-end GPUs.

there were Xbox 360 games with optional installs that added high res textures.
like Battlefield 3 came on 2 discs on 360 (SP and MP), and had an optional install like that on disc 2.

currently on current gen there's Warthunder that has an optional 4k texture pack.
basically these are optional because some might not want to waste storage space and not want them installed. on 360 this was especially of concern because technically a hard drive was optional on that system.

The whole point of DLSS is to gain performance while retaining the impression of native image quality.

Nintendo already has games running at Native 4K without upscaling (like Metroid Prime 4). Adding DLSS would only improve performance in these cases, not degrade performance.

Yes, but adding DLSS to bring a game from 720p to 1080p or 1080p to 1440p or 4K would degrade performance and may not be worth it.

No, it does not work that way. It's upscales lower res imagines to higher res using an artifical intelligence algorithm.

You are thinking of shaders.

Almost guaranteed docked. Some fans are high on the copium and thinks it's better than it is. I think a ps4 docked is good for it's form factor and thermals.

Power on Par with a mid range PC?

What year is it?

In 2025 the base PS5 is on par with a mid range PC. Not a handheld console with an underclocked 3050 maybe 2050.

I taught Nintendo guys dident care about graphics..

I mean, they went from ps3 to ps4-level of graphics, this is more than acceptable for a handheld device, so can't blame them.

However, as a console for couch gaming on a TV set it's rather average, i wouldn't buy any multiplatform game for something like this unless i had no other console/pc to play it on.

I will say they just had a press release and the system releases In less than 2 months. They shown the games at the press conference, they are not going to magically get better in that time frame. Future games we will have to wait and see.

I think you'll be surprised when we get final footage. It won't be a huge change or anything but there will be ways it is better. For example, I don't think we've seen any footage of Cyberpunk at 40fps yet.

Though it's definitely on Nintendo for deciding to show this footage.

Well, as expected, a base PS4 somewhat improved by the more modern architecture that will be a huge graphical leap compared to the first Switch, the only thing missing was that NS2 did not surpass a hardware that came out in 2013 for $399, I see that now DF does not count.

Eh....plenty of better places to play these games. I want to see a deep dive on the enhanced games on Switch 2 personally. Stuff like this is just not relevant to me.
But is important to be covered since apparently somehow switch2 is going to be awsome for third party ..specially new games not cross gen coming in the next 5 to 10 years.

Dont do this to urself bro, we got enough selfrespect here on gaf to not play cp2077 on lastgen mashines :D
sooooo .... don´t play it on Switch 2? /s

Terrible video (well, not the video, but the PS4 performance), although I played through Witcher 3 on Switch and had lots of fun. Maybe one day I´ll get a PS5 ...

For some it is true… until they can flex ;).
You never care about the outcome of the race until you're first, or in some guys here's case until you get a small boost of energy, manage to overtake the last guy before you (who's retiring after this race), and think you are now in first place because you are still so far behind you don't even see the contestants in front of you.

DLSS is not just free tool to just use whenever you want. DLSS has a performance cost. They speculated that it either the System just cannot run it without serious problems or developers have yet to use it. Time will tell if it gets used regularly in the future.
Maybe Nintendo wants to avoid another PSSR-like fiasco with a hurred up AI scaler...

Finally a better quality FF7R trailer:

Depends on what you call "graphics", most of us don't care about hyper realistic art styles, therefore are not impressed by RDR2 or similar games, but more power to make stylish games look even better has always been applaud. Also, many of us play on PC and other platforms.

A desktop 3050 pulling 100W is only good for 1080p60 with DLSS in recent games:

Desktop 3050 is substantially more powerful than 3050 mobile, and in turn, 3050 mobile is clearly more powerful than Switch 2 (based on leaks) even when docked. Switch 2's ML/DLSS resources are very constrained.

xenoblade chronicles X had a high def texture pack to download

We already saw some of them yes (Star wars Outlaws, Split fiction, Wild Hearts from what I recalled)
