Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

After three days of playing and completing the "final mission" this morning, I'm optimistic about Destiny going forward. I really like that it employs a "MMO lite" philosophy that makes missions feel intimate and focused. I really like how exciting it is to get new items and schematics. Overall, I'm looking forward to what this game becomes.

I haven't played PvP yet, but I'm looking forward to try it tonight.

For me it's a visual thing. I wouldn't mind tanking, and the Titan has a good super, I see people regularly get triple kills with them in PVP. But I'd rather wear a cool hood/cloak than look like Master Chief.

They are cool but some of the late armor deasign for the Titans is also pretty cool if you ask me.

Random Thoughts..

- I like Dinklage as the Ghost and don't see others dislike about his voice acting.
- I have no problem with ADS as it's implemented and see no reason to make Hip-Fire just as accurate as ADS.
- Enemy AI seems great atm. Exploration isn't as challenging as Strikes and that's how it should be.
- The Devils Lair at the recommended level of 6 with level 6 common gear is challenging. Spider Tank and the Eye are long fights but that's ok.
- Need a unified method of loot distribution for all Boss and Mini Bosses. Either it automatically goes into your inventory OR it's a bright shiny on the floor you run on top of OR it's a chest. Mixing these things makes it very confusing as to whether or not the player received loot for the fight.
- Supers should be more rare in The Crucible.
- Titan and Warlock Supers are much more useful in the one game mode that's available to play in The Crucible thus far since they are both AoE. Perhaps less so in other modes?

That's about it for now.

Hunter is the first class I made and I don't get where the love I'm seeing here is coming from. I made a Wizard and aside from different supers and melee attacks I can't see a difference.

Yesterday I played a good bunch of hours with a friend, we find out some issues pretty fast like

------Free roam

-Enemies spawn rate is fast, really fast
-So much invisible walls in non importan structures near to the main dungeon
-So much killzones to avoid exploring out the main zone
-Random enemies with high level above you in the dark zones (This is cool really)
-Beacons sidequests enable after you kill the boss area to revisit stuff you already did it.
-Allies spawn randomly too far from you but makes the enemies near to them more powerful if you get closed so you have to stick with them? can you invite them to your group?

Hope you can get a little more freedom of exploration without finding a invisible wall or a killzone that doesnt let you explore out the box in the game. We find out a hidden path near of the coast that literally makes us border half of the main building but ended with a killzone before whe could jump to the inusual rock pillars

---lv 6 Dungeon

There is no level requirement to join the lvl 6 dungeon so I found lv4 and lv5 players but we succeded to pass the security part because

Issues
-IA just ramp at you
-There are you blind spots the enemies cant reach you so the lvl 4 guy literally wipe out the small mobs and the other guy and me take care of the big ones
-Their IA cant let them pass the securyty drone so you can tank them pretty easy.
.The assassins unit can be killed pretty fast with a bomb or take the to the blind spot to the right and oush them to the lasers

-This is the biggest exploit I found in this dungeon in the first objetive, your loot stacks even if you fail the objetive. Just start the objetive (the enemies cant stop or damage the drone) kill the fallen knights in wave 2 (the ones that gives you blueprints and loot), start eave 3 try to kill the flying witches and let yourself die to restart the objetive, repeat.

cool stuff

-Invisible jackals!!!
-Halo Reach's Boneyard datapad room, so nostalgic
-Killing the spider tank reminded me of Reach's Boneyard section

And some barrier language issues like

-The missions are hit and miss if you dont understand the first speech Ghost is giving you
-There is no clear indication of going to the Tower unless you finish the first boss
-The beacons have no subs and the info they gives is too short to understant forcing you to use your sarcastic gps to indicate where to go without any idea of why are you doing this
-NPCs are so bland you dont understand what they are for

Some group suggestion

-Ah Tac com or an ability to highlight your allies if you get lost.
-A waypoint marker.
-PvP duels like borderlands in free roam.
-PvP servers

I played a bunch yesterday. Got my hunter character to level 8 did the story mission, strike mission, a bunch of quests in the free roam area and played one round of MP. Started up a Titan character and a warlock too to check those out. Titan I just did the story mission. Warlock I did that and several missions in the free roam area.

Hunter is my favorite class, followed by warlock. I got another alpha code from Amazon and sent it to my friend who didn't get one from Bungie. Hoping to play with him some over the weekend.

I love the game. Just what I was expecting from a Halo/Borderlands mash up. I love that there's no voice chat with randoms unless you add them to your fireteam as annoying people was my biggest worry with the game.

Rolling hunter for alpha.

Will roll warlock in beta.

And then pick for main character, I mean this is someone you could literally be spend hundreds of hours with right.

Gotta say: the hunters cowls/capes are pretty badass.

And anyone note that it looks like in the final game you can color your own armor?

Hopefully in the main game we will be able to easily see whether or not people in our friends list want to play alone or whether they are down to have people join them. Sometimes I just want to jump into people's game but I don't want to bother them. That'd be cool if you could set like a status. "Looking for PvP players" or "Exploring solo". I know you can set who can join your fireteam, but in such a social game it'd be cool if they took it a little farther.

Isn't that apart of their chest armor? I was just talking about the class specific gear. Like a warlock can't wear a cape or sash thing. A titan can't wear an armband or a cape.

Ohh right. Do those class items have any effect other than aesthetics?

What do I need to do to get to the second story mission?
I beat the wizard
, but I still have that as my mission. I can do beacon missions, though.

Yup and even your armor can level. I have an item that speeds up my cooldown on the super when I collect ammo.

There is no other story mission in the Alpha.

Presentation is great and it looks nice and crispy, but man is the combat boring. It's like a paired-down Halo with less interesting enemies in a less interesting environment..

After you beat the wizard, you talked to the various people in the Tower (Class trainer, gunsmith, ship mechanic), right? Aside from that, the alpha only has Exploration, a Strike Mission (The Devil's Lair, recommended for Levels 6 and higher), PVP in the Crucible. The Strike requires a 3 man team and (I think) also PS+.

Leveled up to 8 Warlock today. Shoutout to jerpie for giving me a code.

Everything overall was fun but the some pretty major faults they'll need to fix for the end game. The MMO fetch quest elements were terrible and need to be completely overhauled imo. In a normal MMO you can tell the quest level, it's rewards and usually what you have to do before you accept it so you can tell if it is worth your time. Kill x quests are bland and a really poor way to show off your game in any case.

Strike mission was good but again with ridiculously unnecessary flaws. The fight against the tank was 1000% the most boring crap ever. Nothing in the game should ever have that much health and be able to one shot you. It encourages shitty poke and hide gameplay and that just makes the already boring event even more incredibly boring. I also had an event against another big health guy and that was a joke too, eventually after spending a ridiculous amount of time and ammo he just ran away. The final battle against the giant guilty spark was better simply because he summoned waves of enemies which helped distract but again the boss had way too much health and was not fun the fight against.

dunno if its been mentioned, but claims of bosses being too difficult or drawn out are unfounded. if you know what you're doing and are equipped appropriately then the boss battles are perfection :)

I think I'm gonna go with Titan for the full game since Warlock seems to be the go to class for a lot of people. I feel like my Fireteam will be needing a tank for when facing large group of enemies.

I don't know if it's because I have better equipment or have gotten full mastery over the controls but I almost solo a Noble Dead Walker a few minutes back. If I had just one more minute in the timer, I would've definitely taken the bastard down. Took it down to less than a fourth of his health left. Lucky for it, it had a lot of company keeping me busy.

whats your primary gun?

I think the game looks amazing, but I don't like how the Hunter's feet aren't planted on the ground while sitting. Just a small gripe.

I feel like the animation as a whole could had been better animated. Some animations feel a little stiff, though typical of FPS-type games.

I mean, as much as I'd like for there to be more 'ommph' on the melee attacks of the Guardians, that would mean an input delay.

Thanks man.

Damn I just got out of hospital and I did not get to play much tonight. Any chance bungie can extend the Alpha for a day? :(

Agreed. The sound design is nothing short of phenomenal, and was the first thing that truly blew me away with my first few moments stepping into Destiny's world.

OK cool. I can't wait for this game. I'm having a blast in both PvE and PvP.

Being a level 8 titan with all green items and getting one hit killed by the spider tank on the strike is maddening. What's the point of being a tank if your getting one shotted.

Oh man, I love the vast world. I'm constantly finding new spots.
I just found the place where the gameplay section started they showed at E3 2013.

I found it at night and got some amazing shots in a dust storm with the aurora borealis lighting up the sky. Game is damn pretty

Just unlocked the second grenade type for Warlock (cluster bomb). Is it any good?

Random exploration in co-op is actually pretty fun. The art is fantastic so everywhere you turn it feels really hand designed, running across other players and/or fireteams is amusing, and Public Events where everyone in that session rushes to the scene is a great visual. I hope the rate of Public Events and player encounters are pushed a bit higher for the Beta and final game though.

The Strike mission is fun. If you're underleveled even a little or are unsure of the strategy it gets to feel a bit spongey, but it's not cheap. The Raids being bigger versions of this will be a huge mess.....in a good way.

Haven't tried PvP yet, but from the footage it seems a bit basic, and lacking in the dynamic highlight reel potential of Halo. Kill times are quick, and the heavy emphasis on ADS in the midst of a bunch of supers and extended jump abilities seems counterintuitive which puts me off (as it does in PvE). Like I said though, I haven't tried it myself and I might turn around on it like I have with the PvE stuff, but even if i don't, the exploration + co-op + loot can more than make up for it.

I'm not gonna say it's won me over all the way, I'd still like to see some large scale Scarab-esque encounters before I scream praise from the rooftops, but I get this game now, which is more than I could've said a few weeks ago. Bring on the beetah.

Thats it exactly, the Halo like movement and super jumps don't mesh well at all with third person view and ADS.

Played a good couple of hours. Isn't this just Borderlands but with other people in your game?

Basically, the structure of this game is almost exactly like Borderlands. Borderlands even had skill tree's and supers although Borderlands doesn't take you out of first person mode to use them and the recharge is a lot faster.

Trax Mallus II with damage upgraded and Steadyhand IS.
Attack damage is 106.

Yeah, I think it's leveled for people with weapons around 50 Attack. I got a walker down to 25% on my own yesterday, and definitely would have killed the damn thing if it weren't for the Fallen that kept swarming me.

Yes and no. From what I've heard, what Bungie is trying to do with the Alpha and Beta is to let players experience the game cold turkey to find out what is and isn't intuitive. If there are people thinking the game is nothing but fetch quests, then Bungie needs to make the game more intuitive in that area.

It's amazing that this even has to be pointed out to people at this stage frankly!

Is there any gear in the alpha that can get the Warlock's cool down time low? Everything I've found has been tiny at best. Class will be fun as hell once you can use space magic all the time.

There is a different double jump for Warlock eventually, right? Not a fan of the glide.

Yep. I was confused at first, too. Hit X then hit X again immediately. Don't wait for the peak of the jump, otherwise, the jump itself would be stunted and holding it will glide.

I can't tell you how long I was frustrated and thought the Warlock class didn't have it. Now, I just jump very high whenever there are a ton of enemies and blast them from the heaves and hit them with some space magic when I drop.

Damn. I love that term, "space magic."

How can I change character class or recustomise my character appearance. I pressed 'FINISH' by accident. D:

If you want to change to a different character, follow what the post above says. Can't re-customize, sadly. If you meant change the class of the character you're currently laying as, you can't do that either.

Its taken a good few hours but I'm used to the feel of the game now. It's great fun being a warlock. Just like everyone says! Jumping high and using your super on everyone down below is fab.
