Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

The game is wonderful, but it certainly needs proximity chat for communication with strangers. Or is it already there and I've just heard no one else speak?

Finally played a game of Crucible... What the hell was that voice actor doing in the booth.

Some of the worst dialogue I've ever heard, and it also doesn't help he's talking constantly. Dinklage isn't nearly as bad as this guy.

The amount of hate some games get, in this situation Destiny, is unbelievable. No matter whether I think one game is going to flop I never wish for it to happen because that means mass losses of jobs.

The vitriol in some people's thoughts...

Yea, I agree. I am shocked, and excited at how much positive feedback it is getting. It seems like every game is met with at least 50% hatred. It's good to see this garnering excitement. I have to keep reminding myself that it's going to have a "cinematic story" mode too, because I've already had a blast without it.

Really enjoying this so far. Playing as an Exo Titan. Feels nice, still learning the ropes of my abilities and leveling up. Would be nice to team up with someone with voice chat to ask for help.

Sad to learn the alpha is ending so soon, me and my brother had so much fun with this today, also had some gaffers join our fireteam from my friend list on PS4 too which was cool

I love Destiny it is amazing, bring on July for the beta and obviously September

What do you all think the beta will be like, will it feature pretty much the same stuff as the alpha or maybe it will feature new and more missions like that mission with the spider tank? Maybe we will get an extra planet and get to explore Mars? I wonder if it will be more polished too? It already looks beautiful the way it is but i understand this an alpha so surely the graphics will improve? Not that they need to though

What are you all expecting from the beta compared to the alpha?

This game is fucking ace. I'm actually excited for it now. It's already a buy, but it would so, so, so much sweeter if they had managed 60FPS.

Played it for a hour orso and yeah it's fun but the VO in story and MP are a bit of a bore. Like there reading it when just waking up. Hope you can change something at full release but i think you can't.

PvE makes me want to keep my preorder and PvP makes me want to cancel it. I'm doing terrible in MP. Also, I'm entering a match with a guy in DestinyGAF. Did GAF make a clan or something?

Deathmatch should have been the alpha mode for crucible. Barely anyone captures objectives

EDIT: Who is the idiot who made objective B on the moon in the open and in front of a turret?

My thoughts:

1. Explore respawn rates need to be toned down a little bit, but more importantly they need their areas and group composition randomized. When you know exactly where what group of enemies is going to spawn every time it takes away from the immersion, and the whole "turn away, take a step and turn back to find them spawned again" thing is just silly.

2. It might just be me but in multi when I'm using a scout or pulse rifle, if I'm not aiming down sights I feel like there's little responsiveness in regards to if my shots are hitting or not. Obviously I can come up with the conclusion based upon if they die or if I die but mid fight I either can't tell at all where my shots are hitting and how I need to correct most of the time, and I don't have this issue when any other weapons.

3. If load times are going to be this long in the retail game (doubt it,) I would kill to be able to have my thumbstick rotate whatever planet we're in orbit above or change the day-night cycle or even alter the weather, purely user-side only things that would help kill the time.

4. Please fix the soccer ball physics on the Tower so it doesn't get stuck in random stairs, thanks. And maybe toss in a couple of goals too.

Wait what?! I haven't seen a football, let alone one you can play with, at all in The Tower! Where's it located?

I havent been able to try The Crucible yet, because I keep getting disconnected from Destiny's servers. Error code: Bee. It always happens as the space ships swoop down to land. I can't stay connected to my friend in a fireteam, either. But if I join the strike with randoms, it works fine...

bungie.net says they are aware, general networking error.

What do you do with weapon parts and other materials you get from breakdown gear?

Supposedly with weapon parts you'll be able to use for upgrading weapons, though I haven't been able to in the alpha. But with the other materials I've been able to upgrade uncommon armor, something I didn't discover until a couple days ago, so that's pretty neat. You can also do material exchanges in the Tower.

This spot over here is where it spawns.

Do you have to go somewhere to upgrade the armor? Spinmetal is the only thing I've used.

Really enjoyed this, level 8 and I dont think I will play much more, Ive seen everything the the alpha except PvP which I wont be touching, I get a Halo ODST vibe from this for some reason.

Thx for the link since I just signed in to check the feedback so far. It seems like it's similar to what is being talked about on GAF. :^p

- Bosses in the strike having insane health pool
- FOV being too close
- More interaction options
- Potential level cap of 20 being too low
- Enemy AI not up to par
- Shotgun needed a look at in the crucible

I'm already looking forward the beta to see what kind of adjustment bungie will make based on feedback. :]

I could do it in the inventory screen, when hovering over the armor it'll tell you to press triangle to upgrade instead of to view details. It appears it can't be done with normal/common armor tho.

I thought you upgraded the armor from using it, not materials, just like the weapons

I dunno, when I upgraded my chest plate I'm pretty certain it took an item from my inventory. It could be setup like weapons for the alpha though. But I'm certain I remember reading that Bungie was going to put a huge emphasis on modifying/upgrading your own gear using materials.

Really? I'm not so certain, as upgrading basically consists of either unlocking or switching out armor "skill" loadouts.

Yeah definitely, but I thought they mentioned you had to upgrade them in different ways using materials at the tower. They can be upgraded from experience though too.

I think I'm just going to avoid the videos and wait till I play it myself. Just feels like the type of game you need to go hands on for a little bit to fully understand what the game is about.

Here's hoping I get that invite tomorrow...

Yep. From videos, it might seem boring. But actually playing it will reveal the solid gunplay, immersion from the game's environment, spontaneous Public Events and a few more stuff that you need to experience firsthand.

I gather it won't be the most popular multiplayer game for montages and such, but wilk be very popular with RPG and even dudebro players.

From the stuff I've seen the Devil walker could use a bit of a health pool nerf to it's legs, make it not take so long to cripple it but keep it's overall health pool the same. I love the challenge the strike stuff looks like especially on legendary, the 'bullet sponginess' has looked fine in videos where the group is well geared and works as a team to bring down stronger adds like the Fallen captains.

It seems to be a great challenge for fps who's bigger challenges these days comes from dying instantly when popping out for one second rather than enemies that actually get position on you and take advantage of your mistakes.

Why in goodness name is the menu interface handled through a cursor if I can't use the touch-pad to move the icon? It works well for text entry elsewhere on the system, why not here?
