I can totally see Hades or whoever overriding the codecs when a Palutena/Pit codec is started.
Yeah, I anticipate codec call Easter eggs with the KIU cast, on Palutena's Temple and Reset Bomb Forest.

In fact, someone should've tried spamming the taunt button on Reset Bomb Forest at E3.

Snake has to be in. Nothing beats the feeling of laying down C4 and blowing it at just the right time. NOTHING!
I love watching competitive matches with Snake players. The way they'll roll backwards, drop a mine, roll forwards, then detonate it as the foe rolls past them. So amazing. :-)

Uhm... I see more and more people believing the leaker, but I'm still sceptical.

Correct me if I'm wrong, we know for sure he guessed Little Mac, Palutena, Mii and Pac-Man.
- Little Mac returned in the new Punch-Out for Wii.
- Palutena was teased to death. Sakurai also developed Kid Icarus Uprising. Furthermore, he said he was going to put more female characters in Smash 4.
- Mii is also playable in MKW, MK7, Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, basically every Nintendo character-based online game.
- Pac-Man is Namco's rep.

I don't count Greninja as an actual prediction -- every Smash introduced a Pokémon from the latest generation, and of course Smash 4 is no exception. He simply said "Pokémon from X/Y".

The hardly predictable characters are Villager, WFT, Shulk and Chorus Men. The first two were posted after their reveal. The latter remain to be seen.

And he completely failed to predict Rosalina.

After?

Wii Fit Trainer, Villager, Little Mac, Mega Man, Pac Man and Mii were leaked before the Nintendo Direct.

Fuck, now I need Snake and Pit and Palutena all on the battlefield (maybe even Pitoo alt for Pit leading to even more different conversations) and have it be such that if any of them start something their "codecs" interrupt each other

Team starfox could also do it

You would need pure evil in your heart to not want Jiggs back.

Has Sakurai ever mentioned why Jigglypuff got in over the more boring obvious Pokemon choices?

I would assume it was part setting the comedic tone of Smash. Or it was because of hardware limitations and they only had room for another ball character.

I get sad when I think about him/her being on the chopping block before Brawl.

Well, you're wrong about the timing of the Villager and Wii Fit predictions. They were definitely predicted before E3. This can be proven. You also neglected to mention Mega Man, which isn't really a simple or obvious guess.

I think the Greninja can be explained by what Sakurai said at the roundtable. He locked the character list when the game started development and knew he wanted to include a Pokemon from X/Y, so he just left a generic slot open for it. After talking with Game Freak artists, he decided on Greninja. It's entirely likely that someone who saw all those things would have seen the list when Greninja was not Greninja yet.

He predicted Villager and WFT before their E3 reveal. In fact the fact that he was the one and only person that seemed to guess Wii Fit Trainer (and with accurate name) is that gave him so much credibility.

Then there's the fact that there's a Rythm Heaven enemy in Smash Run which makes Chorus Kids all the more likely.

Like its really easy to dismiss his predictions as hindsight, but the WFT and Chorus Kids ones should really be almost enough evidence.

It was because he wanted another character that could fly like Kirby but didn't have time to put in Dedede.

Villager and WFT were revealed before E3 2013 actually. Mii Fighters by name was leaked.

This needs to be in, and I expect nothing less than like 5 minutes of running commentary over the match.

Villager ("Animal Crossing Guy"), Mega Man, and Wii Fit Trainer were posted about before last year's E3, so no, it was not posted after their reveal. All three were correctly predicted prior to their reveal, along with Little Mac, Mii Fighters, Palutena, and Pac-Man (and Greninja, kind of, but not specifically). And with a Rhythm Heaven enemy showing up in Smash Run, a Rhythm Heaven character is very likely now, too, which would be Chorus Kids.

How can you not believe a leak this credible? This reminds me of the very credible Pokémon X and Y leaks that were almost entirely correct yet many people didn't believe them. C'mon, it's obvious that this source knows stuff. We're getting Chrom, Shulk, and Chorus Kids.

EDIT: Beaten, a lot! D:

My only issue with the credibility of the leak is whether or not the first and second (and I guess third) leaks were actually from the same person.

I think the first leak absolutely was credible. It's too many wild guesses that turned out to be accurate. Whether the second and third ones are credible depend on if they're that same leaker or not. It's impossible to know for sure.

We could've had Bubbaboom in Smash 4 instead of Greninja.

In his first leak, where he listed ONLY SIX characters, the leaker included Wii Fit Trainer, Villager and Mega Man.

Think about that. If you were a faker, trying to make a list that might turn out right so that you could look clairvoyant after the fact, would you really waste one of your six guesses on Wii Fit Trainer, a character that literally no one else on the Internet guessed?

Or Villager -- Sakurai had previously ruled out Villager, during the Brawl days, saying in an interview that Villager (and Nintendogs, and other such franchises) wouldn't work for playable characters since they don't lend themselves to fighting. As such, the dialogue among Smash fans at the time was that Villager stood no chance.

And then Mega Man... For all intents and purposes, MM and his franchise were considered "dead" before E3 2013. Many people thought he was unlikely since Capcom didn't seem to care about him anymore. Thus, he seemed unlikely from a "relevance" standpoint.

So if you were a faker... Would you really only guess six characters, and then make half of them THOSE characters? Btw, those three were confirmed within like 24 hours.

Any knowledge of probability whatsoever shows the odds of guessing that are astronomically low. That's like winning the lottery multiple times over.

Rosalina, meanwhile, was between leaks. Little Mac then came true, and later Pac-Man and Mii, as the leaker said.

A note about the Miis -- in the third leak, posted before the E3 Digital Event, the leaker correctly named the Miis as "Mii Fighters."

As for "Pokémon from X and Y," in the second leak, I think this vagueness is clearly attributed to the fact Greninja was chosen by Sakurai before he even had a name. As Sakurai revealed at the roundtable after the Invitational, he chose Greninja based on his earliest reference drawings. It's quite possible the leaker saw Greninja back when he didn't yet have a name, hence "Pokémon from X and Y."

Also, the leaker is the only one to suggest Chorus Men, a Rhythm Heaven character, something uncommon on people's guess rosters. And guess what? A Rhythm Heaven character has since appeared as an enemy in Smash Run.

Everything is coming together. The leak is all but fully confirmed.

The Pokemon leaks were inaccurate in some areas. There's no telling whether or not the information in Gematsu would be subject some inaccuracies as well. Games do change throughout development.

Not sure what leak you're referring to, but I'm talking about the leaked info regarding the new Fairy-type and such. I don't even remember what all it was but it ended up being almost all entirely correct, with a few incorrect details here and there.

Early on there was the infamous Mr. XY leak, where it said Froakie's final form was Bubbaboom. Just making a joke!

It was actually on PokeBeach where the XY leak was posted, sent to him by a member on Bulbagarden whose roomate was a tester at Digipen.

Actually, Pokebeach got information closer to release from the same source he claimed which did turn out to be false.

I think that there are a few possible things of note about the leak. First is that it's probably old. The fact that he posted "Pokemon from X/Y" even right before Greninja's reveal seems to prove that.

Also the whole Lucas/Ness discussion had to have happened early on, and also proves he doesn't necessarily know the final roster. Unless that was something Sal just threw in for kicks, considering it had no real new information.

Along with the fact the leak was broken up into parts adding information, mayyybe there were somethings he didn't know about?

Also it might be obvious who knows what and when, which would lead to someone breaking up their leaks because it's not worth risking your job over.

Super Smash Bros for Wii U & 3DS Thread 10: He's keeping us waiting, huh?

Running late I guess?

Uh, I wasn't aware he talked about WFT, Villager and Mega Man here before the Direct. I thought he posted on Gematsu first. So, either it's an actual leak, or someone got extremely lucky with his predictions.

Anyway, just like he didn't predict Rosalina, maybe other unknown characters are in.

I'm really trying to wrap my head around why people think Snake being cut is "a given"

If he's not announced by now, it's not going to happen.

There's no real reason to wait, all the other third party characters were included with some sort of event (E3. announcement of three-game Sonic exclusivity deal) but there's sort of nothing between now and when Smash officially comes out in Japan.

I also think pictures like this basically say "Yeah, these are the third parties in this game."

Yep, all of that sounds reasonable.

And I must admit, thinking about it more, Rosalina does lend credence to the idea there may be additional characters the leaker hasn't mentioned.

That, and the fact the leaker never made it explicitly clear that the newcomers listed are the only ones left.

Also it might be obvious who knows what and when, which would lead to someone breaking up their leaks because it's not worth risking your job over.
It's kind of fascinating to think about someone working on this project who's a legitimate Nintendo fan (rather than just an artist, etc), and having to keep the roster to himself.

He actually posted it on NeoGaf too, in a thread about what characters you thought would be revealed at E3.

I think he said he didn't want to post an unconfirmed rumor yet, but there were details in the leak that led him to trust it, so he stealth-posted it so he could take credit for it later without risking the integrity of Gematsu.

Unless the reason to wait is to make noise.

Lure everyone into thinking Snake is gone.

Then dial the hype to a Spinal Tap-y 11 with a launch trailer reveal.

Nah. No amount of luck would ever make someone seriously say wii fit trainer lol.

Yeah, Sal runs Gematsu and had received the tip in advance, but since he was unsure if it was legit, he posted it on GAF (the unedited post can still be found here) and framed it as "an unlikely guess." Lo and behold, half of it turns out true within 24 hours, and so he goes to press with the story of its origins. Since then we've received two more leaks from the same source, each one timed before a major Smash event.

I thought the main deal was Wii Fit Trainer and Animal Crossing Villager being predicted correctly, which virtually no one else did (especially not in combination).

ALSO predicting Palutena, Pac-man, Mii, and Little Mac is just bonus.

Sonic was revealed way after the three game exclusivity was announced, which was in May. He was announced randomly and uneventfully during the October Nintendo Direct

Wait a second, I had no idea Japan was getting the game almost a month in advance. What the hell, that full roster knowledge is gonna taunt me well in advance, it's Brawl all over again. A shame it isn't a worldwide release, and almost a surprise after Pokémon did so well with it.
