What issues exactly?

Putting the infiltration in the player's hands seems far more interesting and involving. It allows you to dictate some of the experience. The kind of procedural events that could occur in your individual playthrough or indeed in repeated playthroughs gives the game an added layer of replayability. If anything it's an expansion and natural evolution of the gameplay of old Metal Gears, except rather than a room that has multiple different solutions we are given a huge fuck off map.

Open world and MGS is a match made in heaven for me, something I've wanted since MGS3.

You can't Fulton dead bodies, so it isn't an all encompassing solution.

GZ kinda had an inconsistent tone though, with stuff like Skull Face and ending cutscene stuff, as well as the audio tapes. I'm all for it if Kojima can pull it off but I'm not too sure he can. The over the top sillyness coming back makes me feel a lot better about this game.
 
The only problem I have with the gameplay itself though is still the I-droid, I just feel its severely out of place in both it's futuristic UI design and purpose, Kojima and his team are very creative people and I feel using this super-gadget for everything is just boring. Like what's the point of having a 1984 accurate stop watch if Big Boss has a super-hologram-computer in his pocket?

I think Kojima and co could of designed the UI in a way that made sense for the time period while being wholly unique. The whole future design of the UI in general just feels very out of place in the context of the game and series as a whole. And its generic really, a lot of games have the crazy super gadget + user interface these days, why does a MGS in 1984 have to have it too?

I imagine a retro-lo-fi tech style would have been much better, open the map, Big Boss spreads open an actual map, want to inspect your recruited soldiers? Big Boss opens a dossier with soldier mugshots intel and stats. everything about the I-droid just screams LAZY to me. It works though, I'll give them that, I just expected a bit more creativity from them.
 
The game looks outstanding. Like how they've still got the weird quickly stuff still in there. Those balloons taking things back to MB, and the random sheep is ridiculous.

I'm okay with an equal measured level of over the top zaniness (the ending cutscene to Ground Zeroes was predictably ridiculous and totally Metal Gear).

So yeah, it wasn't completely super serious, but I didn't mind stuff like the fulton and cardboard box not being in it...

The cutscenes imply the opposite though. The story content of PP is most likely going to be even darker than in GZ, while the gameplay seems a lot more light-hearted. It stands in direct conflict.

MGS stories were never funny or light hearted, but I didn't see anyone complaining about stuff like fighting a boss that makes Tommy guns out of bees.
 
hmmmm The fulton seems a bit stupid...

why does is hover a bit then blast off? And there seems to be no penalty for using it. They scream every time, that should at least be noticed by the guards.

Fair enough. But MGS has always had both a really serious and really silly tone. I think thats why so many love the series. Its showcase of range can really fiddle with your emotions.

I was one of the people complaining about GZ not having its ! and cardboard box at the beginning. I'm glad we got a taste of range of some more of the silly stuff. But during the moment when the first sandstorm stopped, the music kicked in, and they showed the two on the horizon.. I was saying to myself "this game is going to bring the feels isn't it".

Pros

-Gathering raw materials

-Guard shift changes. Exactly what I expected from an open world MGS game

-Time skip is useful and something more open world games need

- Numerous custom waypoints look very useful for planning

- New box tricks are cool

- Dynamic CQC into walls and dumpsters is great

-At least the fulton doesn't work indoors (more on this in the cons)

- Air strike affects looked cool

- Base invasion by other plays seems to be what they were hinting at, disappointed they didn't actually show this.

- Interacting with characters like Ocelot off mission is great. Just hope Big Boss will fucking talk during these interactions.

Him not speaking during the opening cut scene was bad and I think it will reflect much of the game. Its jarring and a horrible design choice. I hate silent protagonists or pseudo-silent protagonists and the later is exactly what they've going for from what we've seen. Stupid. Funny they've put so much emphasis on Sutherland when we've hard about 10 times as much dialogue from Ocelot and Kaz.

Cons

- Big Boss is a fucking mute

- Still no voices for interrogation, don't think its getting added either. Bet hold-ups will be permanent as well.

- R&D department gives me horrible flashbacks to PW boss battles taking forever

- Supply drops come out of nowhere, no plane can be seen in the clear sky

- Continues to be a host of problems with the horribly designed Fulton system.

Why do nearby guards not notice trucks floating away in the sky?

Being able to instantly extract whoever you want removes tension, imagine GZ with the fulton. Sneaking out several hostages or just taking Chico was a real head scratcher for me, and carrying out Paz on your back sneaking through the time base to get to a safe LZ - all that would be eliminated with the goddamn fulton system.

Also, why exactly does Big Boss need to call for a helicopter extraction, why can't he just insta-zip into the sky with the Fulton?

Come on, guy. MGS5 is obviously a lot darker than anything else in the series and Kojimi is actively promoting the tone as such. Well, at least when he isn't presenting gameplay.

You should be able to play it fine. Kojima said in E3 interview with Gamespot that he will use the 9 year coma that happened before the start of MGSV as a storytelling device. Big Boss will wake up disoriented, he will need to remember everything he knew before, both memories and abilities. That will enable MGS V to be novice friendly.

However, you can always get a quick story refresher from some of us, little overview of pre-MGS5 and post MGS5-events, just to know who the main players are and will be in the future.

All you really need to do is play Ground Zeroes, it will catch you up on the main players you need to know about and get you primed for the game.

If you like the gameplay here, Ground Zeroes is very similar.

I'm guessing it would break the game's difficulty. You can however escape quicker if you find a large enough object, stand on it, and then fulton it up, transporting yourself back to motherbase.
 
the fulton system is super flawed.

I dont like they way they took MGS since MGS1 for PS1. used to be so awesome and kick ass with a serious tone. this new MGS is just wrong and it has killed the series for me.
 
Cardboard box is just another way to mess around with the system, Its not essential its completely optional. If you want a super ultra realistic gameplay u can do that as well, gameplay is strong and flexible enough to support all sorts of play style, same goes for fulcan recovery as well
 
Mother Base seems to be central the online component of the game. The narrator says

"Your base in The Phantom Pain can be attacked, which means that all the relationships you make within your mission and/or online will come back and affect you here."

If this means online invasions against players' Mother Bases... O_O

Not necessary but it would be good to not only put you up to speed with the backstory but also a preview of the gameplay evolution of PW and GZ to TPP. Also its just a great game.

And if you haven't played GZ you should definitely play it before TPP.

I think you're misremembering a good bit of MGS1. There's plenty of goofy sprinkled throughout.

That's the problem with Fulton, breaks the game difficulty for the sake of a pokemon meta game.

Bosses are actually something which I'm really concerned about in MGS5. I enjoyed the boss battles in Peace Walker in multiplayer, but they never really fealt like "MGS" boss battles to me. In the same way most of the boss battles in MGS4 were a step down from before. So it's been ages since we've had really memorable MGS style boss fights which were designed as really fun action game boss encounters. With MGS5 moving into open world, I'm not sure if bosses are even something Kojima really cares much about anymore. I hope I'm wrong. :(

The helicopter thing is pretty funny too. I always assumed when playing PW that Fulton was how you got back to mother base at the end of missions. Lol. It just seems to much more efficient. :P
