Ah well, without Pulga's sister pics it wasn't a perfect day, but it was pretty damn close. Can't believe I'm experiencing Costa Rica making it to the round of 16 again, and I'm pretty goddamn sure we can make it even further. So much national pride today from literally everyone everywhere. It's a good day GAF. Good day.

Missed the Costa Rica v Italy match but I just revisited the pages in the thread to read the live responses and post match discussion.

Very good day :)

What is ITV? Here in the states ESPN has done a surprisingly great job of covering the Cup and giving each team its due.
ITV are shit, they make x factor, downton abbey and somehow get football coverage so they trundle along being the shittest channel outside of channel 5.

If you guys get first in the group you will face Ivory Coast, Japan or Greece. CRC can beat those. No doubt.
If you guys come second, then you will face Colombia... that is a totally different story and I don't think it has a happy ending for CRC.

So, please, get first place. A TIE with England will be enough.

no matter how many times they hear it called football by just about every other nation on earth, Americans can 't seem to drop the 'soccer' monika

And? Usa, Canada, Australia and NZ + more call it soccer, who cares m8. We have to listen to Sepp blatter and get along.

They'll challenge more than Portugal did, they're far more spunky, but Germany should beat them all the same. As an American, I'll be rooting for Ghana though, as a win gives the US a chance to win the group even if Germany beats us.

...of course, we'd have to throttle Portugal 6-0 to do it and then lose to Germany 1-0, but a chance all the same. Either way, I don't want us to get out of the group stage just to job to Belgium.

Getting out of this Group of Death would be a pretty big success for us. Most people didn't even think we would win a game, some said we wouldn't even score a goal against these teams.

If we manage a second place exit through the group stage and a gritty 2-1 defeat to Belgium, I would call it a pretty successful campaign. We're still fledgling eagles on the world soccer stage, the world isn't ready for our freedom yet!

Very happy to see Costa Rica didn't get satisfied with beating Mexico. They've always had the talent, but they often didn't have the mental fortitude to play that one step beyond. Impressive this tournament.

This it's been the happiest I've seen the country ever tbh, let's hope our teams goes above and beyond what anyone expected.

Insigne, Cerci and Cassano have done shit so far. Great subs Prandelli.

Worst overall World Cup I can remember so far. Shit officiating, shit match results, shit bus parking by shin-stomping South-American teams, great teams leaving too early.
all this salt is giving me cardiac arrest
Honduras is depressing, though.
Sadly, all Honduras does care about is beating Mexico.

Not to be corny, but this is why sports are fun to watch for me. Sure, watching Germany or Brazil dominate is compelling in its own right, but seeing a team like Costa Rica make a run in a world-wide event is pretty awesome. Concacaf, out.

Its better then half the dumb names in the MLS. When the league started, they were in the rash of 90s awful abstract names. Abstract ideas like Mutiny, Revolution, or Fusion. This wasn't just in the MLS, this was across all North American sports, its just that the MLS was founded then.

Then, in the mid 2000s or so, they realized those were stupid names, they swung towards Euro sounding names. So there are now teams called Sporting Kansas City, Real Salt Lake (because of all the royalty based in Utah), Houston Dynamo, and attaching FC to everything. This is annoying in its own right, like we are stealing someone else's culture then creating our own.

It's awesome that a Texas club would have a communist-based name, lol.

Most of the names in the league are a hot mess. Except D.C. United, cool name and cool logo. They need to respec all the team names if they want to be legit. NYCFC is a good start.

"FC" isn't the best either, considering we call it soccer here. There are "SC" teams like the upcoming Orlando City SC.

Here's something that those of you who pay attention to MLS may be able to clear up for me. A friend of mine claims that flopping/diving (or least the overly theatrical kind) is less prevalent in the US because making a big deal out of being hit is seen as being a wuss. That there's more of a "man up and keep playing" mentality in MLS as opposed to the European clubs. As such, unless a penalty is pretty blatant/severe, yellow cards aren't issued as frequently.

Is there any truth to that, or he just talking out of his ass? Being American I wouldn't be surprised if there was some truth to it. At least the part about flopping/diving making you come off as a wimp.

That's pretty legit. I mean there's a dive every now and then but mostly the refs are very hard on diving so there's not a whole lot of it.

That's a big IF for Iran. And if they only get 2 goals scored on that woulb be a miracle.

Iran generally doesn't concede many goals, and Argentina had a lot of problems scoring against Bosnia, who aren't really that great at defending.

I think Iran has an outside chance of pulling off an upset tomorrow, if they manage to defend and maybe score from a counter-attack, especially since Argentina's defence isn't anything to write home about either.

The way this world cup has been going I could definitely see it happening.
