Nintendo Treehouse team got a thank-you gift from 4chan's video games board.

I really want to know what kind of generals you post in.

I was today on these threads:

Etrian Odyssey/Dungeon Crawler General
JRPG General
/cgg/ - CUHRAYZEE GAMES GENERAL
Neptunia General
/sgg/-Skullgirls General
Monster Hunter General
Persona and Arena General:
SMT General

I lurk a lot and when I post I'm usually as anon.

I really like GAF, but I can't deny that some of the best game discussions I've had have been on 4chan. I can understand how an outsider can see everything as a mess and people just saying stupid crap, but there's legitimate discussions in the site.

I'm confused. I can't accept that these are genuinely kind acts. What am I missing?

4chan stopped being about that /b/ shit a LONG time ago. It's like a superior version of Reddit now. You just need your sarcasm meter set on max to filter out the shitposts.

And /v/ is fun times especially during events like E3. However /vg/ and /vr are the superior boards after all.

OK, you and me are buds now.

Well that's a backhanded compliment if I ever saw one!

/v/ is funny as hell. Very few people are serious there. It's trolls trolling trolls. Just dumb shit and a place to vent and air out your dirty laundry. It's the digital embodiment of your living room with all of your friends in it talking mad shit amongst one another.

I can't say my friends and I shit-talk in quite that way.

IF they really have all that poison inside, is better to let it out in a message board than in real life .

How? So they can continue to foster the beliefs at best and have those beliefs grow at worse? Nah, better to have them let it out in public. It gives me more opportunities to not waste my time knowing such people.

/v/ is far more mixed than that and this is a conversation that's already been had in this thread. If you find it too abrasive and homophobic/racist than that's perfectly fine, but there CAN be legitimate gaming discussion there if you know where to look instead of painting the entire board with the same broad strokes they're currently painting us with.

I'm sorry, but if a message board or image board requires some sort of huge trial and error learning curve just to navigate through it and not be a fucking repulsive experience, it's not really somewhere me or anyone like me would want to be. And I'm not some special little snowflake, there's a TON of people like me. Perhaps it's best to accept that some people don't have the stomach for that shit like you do.

It's like swimming in a pool of feces trying to find the chocolate bar hidden in it... why would anyone do that under any circumstances when there's easier ways to get a chocolate bar?

no..he is fucking right..is one of the worse habits of some nintendo gamers..the whole"nintendo is saving gaming" ...people seems to like high horses

A little upset because Nintendo had a good week that fans appreciated? It's not like Nintendo is undeserving of praise by default just because of your own inclinations.
Labeling "Nintendo gamers" like some subset of people beneath you while claiming they are the ones on the high horse is the best laugh I've had all day.

So they use slurs. A lot. I'm not disagreeing with that. I'm not saying it's a good thing either. But there's actual discussion going on underneath it, and they don't distract from the discussion People ignore those slurs and actually move on to discussing shit on /v/, unlike on GAF where the thread would become all about racism/sexism if one slur was used.

Some people are bothered by it more than others. As far as I'm personally concerned, it's just some stupid shit. I usually just ignore it and try to discuss games in threads where most people are more civil. It's fine if you don't like or want to deal with that, but it's not like that's the only experience people can have with the site, and it's not like people are somehow wrong for getting some entertainment from going there.

I'm not disputing the fact that there are legitimate (by internet standards) discussions happening, but at the same time, I can't endorse your double standards re: ignoring the lack of basic human decency by some people while engaging in conversation with them. Sorry, that's how I feel about it. I'd also argue that the bolded statement does not reflect the reality of how such an incident would play out, at all.

Sometimes certain non-game related topics dominate game discussion so much here that it's actually easier to wade through that stuff at /v/ and find the actual game discussion. Especially during E3 when threads were so consolidated.

Not sure what you're referring to with the E3 stuff, but I'm almost certain that you're expecting 'actual game discussion' from the wrong threads, e.g. you could easily ignore everything in ponpo's image (top of the page) just by looking at the thread title if that's not what you're looking for. Sticking to dedicated OTs or specific community threads is one thing you could do instead.

They think the same of NeoGAF.
So? I'm not the one defending a board as a place for legitimate discussion. /v/ recognizes they're complete shit at it, so why on Earth do some people act like /v/ is some wonderful hotbed of interesting arguments? It's not.

General and collaboration are pretty much their own things. Less drive-by shit posters is already an improvement over the majority of /v/.

Late night /v/ has threads discussing how nations are collapsing thanks to the corruption of ethnic minorities. Stormfront-lite is a fine label for them.

And LOL at "legitimate gaming discussion". /v/ has so much trouble talking about video games it's a joke there. Go anywhere else. Hell, any of the other video game boards on 4chan are better places.
And at the moment of writing it its front page has mostly has a few threads about MMORPG's, a Mario Kart 8 tournament, a Mario general and a thread about the Smash MGL. Yes, there will probably also be a thread about how awful anita is or EA being shit or whatever, so if it bothers you, you ignore it. That's the main rule of /v/ and if you don't like you're free to leave. I use it as a dumb humor site and for a few serious discussions around E3 time before going back to /co/ and /vg/, but I feel you're being completely disingenuous about how the board normally is just due to how anonymity naturally leads to some people being racist, sexist dickheads.

Even following your own logic about it being their most popular board you would realize not every discussion thread on /v/ is like that and the alarmist reaction GAF and other sites has to any mention of 4chan is part of why they get dumb and insular about so many different things. I'm glad I have GAF to talk about stuff like Feminist Frequency without being called a white knight or whatever (and I don't even fully agree with all of it), but I feel I'm mature enough to browse where I might see the "fag" tossed around more than once and not come out a worse person for it.

I just realized in the same thread I've felt the need to defend both GAF and /v/ while arguing the benefits of both, all over a giant postcard. Erm.

During E3 multiple threads for games weren't really allowed without new news and a lot of threads were dominated by gender/race stuff (even Giantbomb for whatever reason). Those fights are honorable and all but not what I come to neogaf for. Of course the correct response is to ignore it and go on, but during E3 it was just easier to find different places for discussion.

Meh, [containment] sub-boards have their purposes, but for general discussion for all genres, they do not replace the main board.

TFW there was a nice Rhythm Tengoku series thread the other night but GAF almost never talks about the games anymore.

Wait, which one was that. :o The "post your favourite/least favourite rhythm game" one?

Well, the GB thread got sidetracked by some ill-conceived Twitter posts, but it's not like it wasn't a justified concern. In any case, the actual announcement threads had 100% game discussion, so I'm still not sure what you're referring to.

It's the internet. It's hard to empathize with people on the internet. A lot of people just flat out don't, and that'd kind of what 4chan is built around, that if someone calls someone a name, neither people will care about the other because neither one gives a shit about them as a human being. 4chan's almost just built around ignoring that the other people on the site are people too. It's strange, but if you don't like it, just ignore it and don't go there. Don't act like people who don't really care how other people on the internet feel are scum for not caring.
As for my bolded statement, I've seen it happen before, and I think a lot of GAFfers would agree that threads can and sometimes do get derailed by shit like that.

Obviously you wouldn't come out as a worse person for browsing 4Chan, but that doesn't change the fact that the site is one of the most toxic sites on the internet. No one should be able to use homophobic and racial slurs anywhere in public without consequence.

I hope they used a UV light to check for "stains" before holding the collage.

I never said that so there's no need to get defensive on a personal level. I already do ignore it and stay out of there, but I am allowed to offer my standpoint on it, I'm pretty sure. In the end, it seems to boil down to how we decide to deal with anonymity, and I certainly couldn't do it the way you described (i.e. disregarding the fact that I'm communicating with other people).

No, actually, what happened was that the OP was a blatant Chorus Man Smash Bros. bait, but it turned into discussion about the games themselves.

Ah, well. Maybe I should do a RT community thread, hmm..

So it's wrong that they use slurs, but grouping all of 4chan together as people that might beat off onto a collage is something that is perfectly fine and not at all hypocritical?

People that post on 4chan are horrible people. I see no problem with grouping all of them together.

I could be dying of dehydration, but I still wouldn't accept a drink of water from a 4chan poster.

Welp, this might be the most hypocritical post I have ever read on NeoGAF. Congrats.

Dude, come on. /v/ is not a shitty place like that, they managed to send a card to treehouse, iwata, hideki kamiya, kojima, and some users even went to valve in gabe's 50th year anniversary . The place has a lot of problems, but these problems come with being anonymous. You saying this like 4chan is full of perverted people and they would do this for the sake of being funny or shitty people is sad. They sent a gift to the treehouse team, and they actually acknowledged it because they loved it. If there was something bad about the poster, they wouldn't even post it. Every place on the internet can be extremely toxic, you just need to make the best use of it. 4chan ain't exactly the best place in the world, but they do make incredible things (just like neoGAF does in some ocasions).

come on man, this is an extreme generalization.

No problem grouping everyone together - what the flying fuck

this is like if one dog kills a guy then all dogs must be out for human blood

Because it sometimes is and sometimes (usually) isn't, just like here. Or anywhere, for that matter.

4chan ain't that bad at all.

/v/ is alright sometimes, but it's /vg/ is where it's at although I don't go to that board anymore.

I just mostly post on /fa/ and sometimes /pol/ & /int/

They're like the Nazis of the internets, amirite?

Poe's Law is a bitch.

Posting something terrible and then using "Poe's Law" as an excuse usually isn't something I would see GAF tolerating.

People who ignore and look past the slurs are just as bad as the people who use them.

If I were to agree with you, I would have said "Yes, which you are entirely doing by calling people on 4chan a much of masturbators and looking past the fact that it is name calling." But I don't agree with you. You don't lump a bunch of people together because they did one thing. Take that thread the other day, the awfully, awfully racist one that got stickied in the OT for a bit. GAF ain't all awful because one person posted that. But, by your logic, anyone who ignored that thread is incredibly awful.

A racist thread got stickied? Link?

Lack of /v/ archives is why I didn't like it. I get much enjoyment from reading past threads.

But at least someone's archiving it now.

For a short bit, it was stickied. Definitely to be laughed at, because, just holy shit. (It had a Lionel Mandrake summary, just read that if you're pressed for time).

I didn't post the original comment nor try to excuse it so... Okay?

I was just pointing out that sarcastic posts like that aren't usually something GAFfers expect because of the incredibly harsh ban policy.

To be fair I don't remember this at all and it doesn't sound like something GAF would tolerate unless it wast he mods trying to make an example out of someone.

EDIT: Oh right, stickied to serve as an example.

What a level headed, reasonable thing to say. You really have me convinced that you're better than those TROLLS.

Also, what do you mean by public and what do you mean by consequence? I mean, it's the internet. There's tons of offensive stuff I dislike but I can choose what I'm exposed to. You're allowed to talk shit about them for being assholes if you want, but are you saying they shouldn't be allowed to be assholes in their own area? Actively trying to mess with people by going after them on other sites is something that's shitty, but if you mean it as more than that, I find that line of thinking to be genuinely frightening.

This has to be one of the most stupidest things I ever read, and surprisingly from Kinsei, go figure.

One of these days someone (or me) needs to compile a list of dumb quotes from this user.

By consequences I meant an IP ban. You're free to yell whatever you want into your megaphone, but don;t be surprised when someone comes and takes your megaphone from you.

You guys... learn how to read through posts in /v/ and avoid taking them seriously or ignore trolling.

Seriously, that place is fine for discussion.
