...oh god, Blonde Bland McBlandington and Blue-Hair the 3rd are really going to be in aren't they? :/

I don't mind Shulk, but fucking Chrom man. Three very similar looking blue-haired sword wielders is such a shame considering Fire Emblem's character diversity. Kellam, Avatar, Tiki.

Cue "Oh but they wield their sword differently" arguments

If you wanted an example of a tanky heavy character, someone like Hardin would serve your point more effectively than a non-character like Kellam.

Agreed. Completely :3
That said, I can't imagine Sakurai just making him a moveset clone between Ike and Marth... He'll probably wield a sword and shield or spear or something or have moves where he summons more diverse characters for support attacks to painfully remind you of all the other awesome characters that could have put in instead of him :P

I'm in the exact opposite boat. I can understand people's problem's with Chrom, but I'm excited for him. I love playing the FE characters, and he will be the first FE character I can truly relate to. I do hope that he's diversified enough though.

But because we're already getting Chrom from the looks of it, my personal preference pushes Shulk from indifference to damn I really don't want him in. Especially with Palutena, Chrom, Mii fighters, Rosalina, and hell even Little Mac and WFT, he's just that one-too-many I look like a human and I have a sword character for me.

But I have confidence that he will be an awesome fighter. I just don't see why we're getting so many regular looking dudes when we could be getting purple space dragons or crocodile kings.

Also, everytime I see his name I think of She Hulk. I can't be alone on that.

Do you often fight down rival nations and undead soldiers alongside your
daughter from the future
?

Heh, when there's no immediate context I sometimes get confuzzled between Shulk and She-hulk, especially after seeing her being called Shulk by the MvC3 community for so long :3

I think most people would be up for a Fire Emblem rep from the latest game though... just maybe not Chrom :P
How would you feel about Robin/my Unit/the tactician (the customisable avatar you make in it basically)? With villager getting in with a fairly diverse set of skins I feel like the stage is set for Robin to also appear; in fact, if it weren't for the leak I'd feel fairly good about their odds :p

Robin would be one of the best choices for a FE newcomer in my opinion; especially if their class, weapon and skill diversity were augmented with the addition of Einherjar. A representative of both protagonist and antagonist roles; the series' varied classes, a vehicle for references to the franchise's history and a player avatar - a fairly good choice overall.

I think that would be the coolest fucking thing ever. Especially if I could make him look like my dude in Awakening. Toller (my MU's name) WRECKS SHIT. Bringing him into Smash would be a dream come true, but like you said yourself, that's very unlikely to happen for many reasons.

At least Chrom's a fuckin boss though. That dude has turned the tides of battle for me so many times at this point I can't even come close to counting them. "NOW I'M ANGRY!" OH YEAH. YEAH GET THE FUCK IN THERE HOMIE!

But I do understand why people would want another rep for diversity's sake. I'm still excited for him though.

Yeah, I can see your point. Let's hope Sakurai gives him crazy Monado abilities to differentiate him from the admittedly already numerous sword fighters.

Also, everytime I see his name I think of She Hulk. I can't be alone on that.

I think of "sulk", and for some reason also of this guy:
hqdefault.jpg

For some reason his name sounds to me like an onomatopaeia of a sound a snail/slug would make. Not particularly flattering, I know.

It's not flattering, but it is completely accurate.

Actually, Shulk's name also bothers me from another angle - all the other party members in Xenoblade have names derived from common or historical ones - Fiona, Duncan, Carla, Amelia, Rickey, Rhain (which has historically been Latinised as Reyn anyway, such as in Reyn Scottus). Shulk just stands out as a generic fantasy name; I suppose it's fitting for such a bland and archetypical character.

Is he really? Because that's what I can't help but think when I look at him, but I try to give him the benefit of the doubt.

He just straight up looks like what "Final Fantasy : Whatever"'s protagonist would look like to me. Part of the reason why I'm not psyched about his inclusion.

I feel like I've even heard Shulk/Xenoblade fans themselves say he's not the most interesting character.

I'm probably going to main Shulk tbh.

Seeing as Wonder Red isn't in
assuming Sakurai isn't trolling with the trophy.
Xenoblade is my next favourite Nintendo game of late, and I'm fucking pumped to play as a character from it, even if the supporting cast is all far more interesting than Shulk :P

He feels very focus-tested, likely as a result of Takahashi intentionally targeting a simple story to offset the 'experimental' game design. "Personality"-wise, he's a combination of every generic teenaged male protagonist you can name; who delivers nothing but utter boredom with laser precision. Lightning would honestly be a more interesting addition.

Case and point.

Shulk be lame. Well at least you're excited. Must be something I'm missing here.

Ugh. Worse than I figured. Why is he getting a slot over K. Rool again? Now I'm just a bit salty.

There must be SOMETHING about Xenoblade that makes people excited though, but it seems like it's obviously not She Hulk.

I liked Shulk more than most generic characters because he's actually a really nice guy. He's the everyman with solid morals put in an extraordinary situation (he's no hero or even action guy at the start of the game, rather being the "smart, technically inclined" one of the party), although he can be quite badass in some cutscenes. He's usually the moral compass of the party, preventing them for (for example) killing someone in revenge, all without being preachy. The fact that he's not an angsty teenager with deeply seated psychological issues may understandably strike people as "uninteresting", probably for the same reason I find Superman uninteresting, and that's fair. I guess the most similar character to him would be Crono, if you've played Chrono Trigger, with the sole difference that he does talk so he's slightly less obviously a stand-in for the player.

Well it's good to see someone has some good things to say about him. He still doesn't seem interesting in the slightest, but I could see how you could relate to him.

I do have to give Shulk some points for not having an 'angst' arc, as it's both cliched and quite annoying but he doesn't really feel like he actually changes or advances much as an actual character. As you say yourself though, he's meant to be a 'stand-in' for the player; the 'everyman' if you will and that is a role that never leads to a really stand-out character. In this day and age though, if you're going to give us a fairly blank vessel it might as well be a customisable character, which is why I suspect X does exactly that :3

I also agree that Superman is ultra bland... he has no weaknesses! Some superman fans were even 'offended' that in the new film he didn't save absolutely everyone in the world despite them all being at threat from multiple points in the world at the same time. How Gary Stu can you get? XD

Case and point.

The main draw of Xenoblade is the interesting world and fantastic supporting cast. Every member of your party is charming and full of personality... as a result I'm ever so glad that you don't actually have to play as shulk for a lot of the game.
Aside from the sections where there wasn't much choice I basically played the majority of the game as Melia. I'd have liked to play 7 more but in my hands, all the patience, aggro-reduction in the world and both of the tanking characters couldn't peel the monsters off them. I played Sharla most, initially, but felt like she became too much of a crutch for my party so I was glad for the opportunity to switch when Magical Girl Melia came on the scene.

Edit:
What is the Monado and why is it so rad? Is that his sword?
To be honest... I'm not sure we could accurately tell you what the Monado is without spoilering stuff but let's just say that it's form doesn't necessarily dictate it's function. it looks like a sword though, yes. It's the red blade-like object he wields, but it has many uses beyond that: you could almost say that the Monada is the entire plot of the game in itself.

Yes, it's his laser beam sword that lets him see the future.

Well then. That does sound fairly rad.

What kind of things could it bring to the Smash table besides hackin an slashin? It can shoot lasers and shit? I'm genuinely curious now, I want to like his inclusion.

Hmmm. Is the plot....good?

Also, thanks for no spoilers, but would you say it would be possible for the Monado to be exciting/interesting in Smash without it using spoilers? If ya get what I'm sayin?

Within the context of the game mechanics it's mostly a buffing tool. It can grant haste to party members, shield them from damage, give them all increased damage against mechanised enemies, etc. I'm sure some of these could be put into smash if they wanted, Palutena even seems to already have haste of a sort in the form of 'lightweight' (aka running faster than sonic :P )

The prophetic stuff benzy mentions actually comes into play too as during battle you get future visions of stuff that will happen unless you do something to change the course of the fight, though I really don't think that could be pulled off in smash :3

What are the odds of a 3ds game working after its been submerged in water?

So many (too many) of the DS games I played when I was younger were stored in my pockets

A few pf them went through the wash 2-3 times
Think I did it once with a 3ds game too

Aside from the cover being gone, which sucks if it was FE:A or ALBW, you should be good

I hope you spoiler'd that because you're aware of how unlikely it is :P

I once would've said the same of Shulk and 3 FE reps and WFT

Shulk himself is a pretty bland character, but that didn't stop Mario/Link/Fox/etc. The Monado is a fucking lightsaber. I mean, that's enough for me. Plus, that means we'd get a stage with dat Xenoblade music! That would be unbelievably epic.

Chrom is a pretty boring and cheap choice though. Lucina would be better, but she too would just be another blue-haired sword fighter. Why not Avatar/Robin, or a lance of axe wielder? (Hector!) Chrom will be a boring clone and will be gone the next game.

I'm glad that this Xenoblade discussion actually kicked off but now I'm afraid of spoilers.

I wouldn't worry, most people are pretty good at avoiding that stuff in general threads... just try to stay away from FAQs or any dedicated discussions on the game and you should be good. Even with me carelessly stumbling around the net and not heeding that advice there were still a few surprises that didn't get completely ruined for me :3

Hmmm. Is the plot....good?

The plot's enjoyable enough and has a few twists and turns that might surprise you. I mean, you're basically adventuring on the giant corpse of a god so it's not exactly a boring premise to begin with :3

As for being interesting in smash... sure, I guess? Depends on your definition of interesting. The Monado has a lot of potential to alter Shulk's properties or change his abilities and in the actual game serves as a buffing tool as much as a weapon. As mentioned before, it's a lot more than merely a 'really good' sword for killing deities like the falchion used by the Fire-Emblemers. It's mostly a question of what Sakurai wants to do with it, he's been pretty 'inventive' with character's movesets before ;D

Ok I won't lie, you have my interest. I might have to play this She Hulk game now.

I knew nothing about it at all. Had no idea you were on the corpse of a god. The story seems to be more about this Monado than any character themselves, even though it's awesome to hear you can play as sode characters and they are interesting. And that thing you said about seeing into the future and planning for it in battle sounds totally awesome. If that could be implemented into Smash in some way, it could make for a ridiculously cool chatacter.

Maybe I'll end up liking him after all. I'll just think of him as a bad-ass sword rather than a dude if his moveset's done well enough. Also thanks for the explanations.

Lol, fair enough :3
A lot of people consider it one of the best RPGs of it's generation. I definitely enjoyed the world and characters and while I found the combat system itself to be a bit clunky, the individual character's mechanics are quite interesting.
You definitely won't find many games that play with such a ridiculous sense of scale though... often when you look up you can see the rest of the giant god and if you look across you can see the corpse of the other god it was fighting when they both stopped moving (this is literally explained right at the beginning so no spoilers here :3 )

Man what a bunch of johkahs.
"I see your strength is the genuine article!" :P

All that Shulk would really need to let me do is wreck fools with the Monado Buster. Sword-beams are hype.
He can also see the future. He should get a skill that lets him auto-evade. He becomes 100% unhittable for a few seconds unless he's attacking. Throw that in his moveset as well as Monado Shield, Armour, and Eater and he'll be unstoppable. Topple can inflict Tripping on fools.

There should also be a charge-up move so Shulk can break his future and nullify others' Final Smashes.

Shulk would be OP and he's not even the most versatile XB character.

Balance? Who cares about balance anymore. My main man Mario can't do shit to Palutena. ;_;

To fully utilise its potential, the Monado itself should be a newcomer. Shulk's just dead weight attached to the handle.

WARNING, THIS SPOILER TAG IS HERE FOR A REASON. UNLESS YOU HAVE COMPLETELY FINISHED XENOBLADE CHRONICLES DO NOT READ IT
So you're saying you want Zanza to be playable then? :P

Any of the other Xenoblade characters would be better...but Shulk is still better than nothing. And the Monado likely will in fact lead to him having a cool moveset that is fairly different from the other sword users. Plus, there is a good chance we will see one of the secondary Xenoblade characters as an Assist Trophy. Personally hoping for Reyn shouting "It's Reyn Time!/What a buncha Johkas". I think Riki or Dunban are pretty likely too though, both of which would be neat.

Of course they do. But we're at the point where the Gematsu leak in nearly infallible. This along with the leak? Comon.

Oh you'll be fine. At least you're not in my situation. (God dammit Snake where the fuck are you.)

So many of my decisions hinge upon Snake.

I just thought of something.

I know people have been speculating that we are getting 48 slots on characters selection screen, so I can't help it but wondering if we are going to have 46 playable characters, 1 random and 1 DLC button rather than 47 playable characters. Only if DLC rumor is real.

Potential 5 cuts

Lucas
Ivysaur
Squirtle
Snake
????

That would be a very dumb thing to do to the character select screen. Great way to make you forget about those characters. Just add a column for each pack.

I just noticed the Mii fighters all have the same mouth and nose. Do they force those attributes to be the same? Or does the mouth change when you get hit?
