Was wondering why people were further on the "whelp gematsu leak confirmed" bandwagon then this morning and then I saw the tweet on the other page. Yep gonna guess he did va for smash and can't announce it yet until Shulk is confirmed

Actually, on second thought, I'd reveal the info using pictures that vaguely relate to the newcomer:

Villager, a picture of my house (referencing the house mechanics of AC)
Mega Man, a picture of a boy with a toy gun (Mega Man is a boy, and shoots)
Wii Fit Trainer, a picture of my shoes (she doesn't wear any)
Rosalina, a picture of a stick (she has a wand)
Little Mac, a picture of my Lord of the Rings books (Boxing Ring)
Greninja, a picture of a Japanese beach (Ninjas are Japanese, Greninja is water type)
Mii, a picture of a random celebrity/political figure (you can put them into Smash)
Palutena, a picture of a lightning bolt (Ali Hillis voices both Lightning and Palutena)
Pac-Man, a picture of Bad Anon from Wreck-It-Ralph (Bad Anon is in Pacman)
Chrom, a picture of Arnold Schwarzenegger in Conan the Barbarian (Crom is mentioned in that movie)
Shulk, two sticks forming an X (Xenoblade Chronicles X reference)
Chorus Men/Kids, a wrestler and a male singer in the same picture (referencing the Wrestler from the Rhythm Heaven franchise)

Ok Shulk and Chorus Kids/Men may not be vague enough but I'm very unfamiliar with the franchises so I can't think of things that'd pass off as being incredibly vague hints.

Screw it, I'd also do this

Almost same as Lupinko's method for UMVC3 leaks.

This is the best way to do it. Lupinko's treasure hunt for ultimate was a ton of fun.

Was there a new leak? Or is this just hypothetical?

While I'd do the same thing, I wouldn't be quite as frustratingly vague with some of those. Like for Rosalina I'd show the original cover of The Little Prince, the character Rosalina is based on. For Palutena I'd show Princess Lana from Captain N (whose design was based off Palutena) though I could imagine the heated discussions of people who actually thought Lightning was in the game.

Shulk's English VA tweeted he's working on some big games which is pretty awesome not for making Shulk likely, but that Nintendo actually managed to get a UK voice actor for one little voice role.

Was there a Xenoblade discussion in here? Because I'm really hopeful that Shulk gets to be in Smash, as I've stated before. But if I was the one to design him, this is how I'd want him to be like. I'll just spoiler this, just in case people want to experience the attacks you get in Xenoblade as they come for newer players.

So basically how I'd make it work would be like this:

His regular specials would be his regular arts.

Standard B: Battle Soul - Fills up the Talent Gauge but causes damage to himself.
Side B - Slit Edge. - A standard side attack, could almost be a regular attack.
Up B - Air Slash. - A standard recovery sword slash move, somewhat like Marth's.
Down B - Shadow Eye - A counter move, Shulk feints then counters with Back Slash.

Now the Talent Gauge could work like this: the more regular attacks you do, the more it fills up, in a similar fashion to Little Mac's Power Meter.

When it's filled, Shulk can use one Monado Art as his special move. His special moves then become this:

Standard B: Monado Buster. - Does a ton of damage, but becomes vulnerable for a second (a la, Falcon Punch).
Side B: Monado Purge - Prevents one character who is hit from it from using their special attacks for a short amount of time.
Up B: Monado Speed - Works in a fashion similar to Pikachu's Quick Attack.
Down B: Monado Armour - Reduces the damage Shulk takes for a short amount of time.

The thing is, much like in Xenoblade, you can only use one Monado Art before his attacks revert to his regular specials. Leaving you to be careful on which art to use in what situation.

As for his Final Smash, it could be Monado Cyclone. An attack that deals major damage and topples everybody on the field, leaving Shulk to go and smash everybody off the screen while they're down for a short amount of time.

The funny thing about all of these Xenoblade spoiler-worrying is that, when Shulk DOES get in, Sakurai isn't going to give a shit and throw it all in anyways.

Remember when Sheik being Zelda was supposed to be a surprise...?

Can someone make a summary?

They just went through each of the characters one by one, as well as the stages. Each had their own opinion and most of the discussion was fairly dry.

Only two real negatives were brought up -

- Yellow Devil on Wiley Castle stage. Said stage was too small and the Yellow Devil was far too invasive, and was on the stage for way too long. Almost impossible to avoid. They want a way to turn him off.

- Problems galore with the 3DS version, of which included the control scheme and the difficulty with trying to find your character on the screen.

The more I think about it, the more a Kid Icarus Underworld stage makes sense (it'll probably be hidden). We already have a Palutena's Army/Skyworld stage and a Forces of Nature/Earth stage, so it'd be weird to ignore the third major faction. And the only top billed Kid Icarus characters we haven't seen yet are Medusa and Hades -- they'd be perfect as background cameos/bosses in an Underworld stage.
Maybe they'd fight each other and the battle would spill over to the foreground as a stage hazard.

Just in case people didn't check the Target Buy 2 get 1 thread,

You can pre-order Smash Wii U as part of the promotion. I just did it myself.

It's one of Mario's custom moves.

You shoot people with boiling water.
Let me rephrase.

It's weird that the boiling water is producing actual fire effects. Yes, water burns, but you're not lighting anything on fire with boiling water.

Saying something literally burns =/= saying it produces fire. The fire is what's weird.

You're a sick man, Heath.

No, a truly sick man would leak the entire roster, plus Ridley.

(If Ridley is actually in, the entire roster plus Wonder Red. If HE's in, plus Bayonetta.)
(Before anyone thinks I'm poking fun at their frustration, those three are actually my three most wanted characters!)

Haha, that'd be so cruel.

Can someone make a summary?

From the first 16 minutes:

  • The game feels very similar to Brawl, it's the Smash that feels more akin to one of its predecessors than any other. However it is speedier and with more of an emphasis in offense; to them this was a great thing.
  • Graphics really pop out, the game looks amazing in HD, especially in colorful stages, such as Pilotwings’.
  • The controls are weird in the 3DS version, had no idea what they were doing at first. The characters are hard to keep an eye on.
  • Mega Man requires practice, he's got some of a learning curve; not a pick up and play character. His neutral B is slow and does not do much damage, found themselves using his A moves more than his specials. Free Gooey Bomb for the win!
  • Rosalina may be the most powerful of the newcomers so far, lots of potential. She herself isn't hard to use, Luma is. They all agree that she’s got the worst Final Smash in the game, hands down. Easy to avoid, doesn't do much knockback, covers only a little part of the stage. They’re surprised it doesn't just follow her, and compare it to a Pokémon like Koffing, in that you just avoid setting foot in a small area of the stage and you’ll be fine.
  • Fox’s Landmaster is still on the screen for way too long
  • A lot of fun with Little Mac. Was pretty effective on the Colosseum, as it didn't require him to be in the air. “A terror on the ground, really fast, really powerful”. The KO Punch does about 39% so it’s pretty powerful but not a guaranteed KO. Recovery may be the worst in the game, but he’s one of the most powerful characters on the game on the ground. If you can get his Up Special underneath the Smash Ball, he typically gets it almost immediately. Unimpressed with Giga Mac, can damage him, doesn't seem too big of an upgrade.
  • The Smash Ball may be harder to break into this game. Appears that sometimes it's easier, sometimes it's tougher...Hard for them to tell.
  • For all the perception there is of her as a joke character, Wii Fit Trainer is actually "pretty damn good".

So how long would someone say the average playthrough of Xenoblade is? I actually want to try it, but I've got so many games I've still gotta play.

Also, does anyone else think that maybe some of the reason why we're getting Shulk is because of Sakurai's relationship with Saga Soraya? I honestly think it had a little something to do with it, which to me sounds good for Snake.

What relationship?

I will now be upping sticks and removing myself from this OT.

It's time I get my hype into check, take onboard the previews and try and forget about this game as much as possible so I don't descend into mass disappointment come October.

I will be here for megaton reveals during Directs. Until then, SmashGAF, au revior!

What relationship?

He just seems to be good friends with her. I haven't looked into it in a while, but I remember him tweeting her often and some other things.

Once she sees Shulk in SSB4, he's probably gonna bang her. SSB4 in general is just all a ploy for Sakurai to get laid.

It's pretty long. I think I'm still only a good 90% of the way through, and I've been playing for 95 hours spread out over the better part of a year (since September 2013) - although I've spent a lot of time doing sidequests.

According to How Long To Beat, average playtime just for the main story is 68h25m. People who rushed it took 51h04m. A more leisurely pace took 96h47m.

I vaguely recall hearing that she didn't work on Xenoblade. She is working on Xenoblade X, but not the first one.

I could be wrong.

Sakurai has tons of industry friends on Twitter, but none of the characters they're associated with are playable in Smash Bros. I don't see why a possible friendship with someone involved with Xenoblade would be the number one reason to include Shulk.

But he has a wife.

Pffft. Sakurai be shaggin.

Hot damn. Looks like I won't be checkin that out until I hit some sort of drought. Those type of games are always tough for me too, because if I don't beat then in one fairly consistent run, I many times don't end up going back to them. I suck with that.

I don't think it was the number one reason at all, but I think it played a factor. He's been fairly well known to show bias towards his friends and other things.

I can't really think of anything besides Snake.

I think it's arguable that he shows bias to the franchises he's worked on in Smash and stuff, but I don't want to get into that and it's not a big deal anyway. I just think his friendship encouraging him to look into Shulk more as a fighter isn't out of the question.

Pretty damn long, around 80 hours, but it's really enjoyable from start to finish. Well, as long as you're not obsessive-compulsive and can afford to skip the hundreds of sidequests, which I recommend (the only commonly mentioned negative point of the game).
Xenoblade is among my favorite games of all time, and considering I've been gaming hardcore for over 30 years, I'd like to think that means something. It has great story (interesting and with many twists but more streamlined and easier to follow than, say, Xenogears), great characters, great gameplay, incredible music, amazing locations... everything about it is top-notch.

... yes it is. :p

Nintendo's darkest secret: that's not water.

Edit: Top of page recommendation: get PAC-MAN Championship Edition DX+ All You Can Eat Edition for 3.74€ (or whatever weird currency your country uses) on Steam!

Will the pro controller be fine for this? I was going to get the bundle but decided to get the pro controller now instead.

I have a feeling I'm at where you're at, and I've got something like 160 hours in because I feel the need to do EVERYTHING. So yeah, I'd wait until you feel like you have NOTHING on your plate.
