2014 FIFA World Cup |OT4| What can European men do against such reckless heat?

That draw was a tough ending for the US, but still, everyone was looking much better today than during the Ghana game.

Germany v. US is gonna be fun to watch for sure.

Congrats to both Belgium and Algeria for their wins today. Had fun watching both games today.

Big question for MLS is who do they sell this to?

Do they stay in LA? Do they move?

I've just been through this so many times that it's depressing. People keep hoping that with good performance in a World Cup, MLS will improve, but honestly I can't see that happening. There's simply not enough time for commercial breaks in a soccer game for it to be huge in the US.

MSL is pretty clearly on the upswing. TV ratings need to improve but by every other metric the league is getting better every year.

also, re: MLS. many of the American stars are coming home and playing in MLS now. that'll help drive interest in the league domestically, I think.

First game, they were bad.

Second game, Ronaldo is slightly injured - thats fair - but theyre still bad.

Therefore, Portugal are bad.

You seem to think only Ronaldo is injured. First game had 3 forced subs due to injuries/fitness, this game had 2 forced subs.

Two strikers injured, left back injured, makeshift leftback not 100%, Raul Meireles not 100%, Ronaldo not 100%, Bruno Alves not 100%.

Portugal were shit though, if they would have lost and gotten knocked out they would have deserved it.

I'm not against people who are fans. But lets be honest here. Those are clearly minority :)

I can bet that many US "fans" knew only one played on the pitch during US - Portugal game and his name was Ronaldo. (And he was one of the worst :))

oh noes the world cup brings out fans who don't follow soccer.

you can be a fan even if you're not educated on every player. you're rooting for your country, that's enough.

LA spin-off of Arsenal owned by Stan Kroenke seems to be a rumor doing the rounds. don't know if it would be that specific club or a totally new expansion club + new stadium, etc., though.

Fair enough, that's probably true. Here in the US things are changing though with easier access to European leagues on TV. Point is people can enjoy the sport and follow it as they please.

I dunno, even though there are a number of ways for the USA to advance, I'd say it doesn't look too good right now. Basically, they need to find a way to tie Germany which won't be easy. Ghana v Portugal is gonna be a wide-open festival of goals.

How do people become fans? By learning about the game through osmosis. Being dicks to anyone because they're interested in a sport they don't know a ton about is shameful.

I agree with you. I've been hoping that this will happen for a while now. But it just does not happen... Just look at US commentators. The only OK ones are with Spanish accent :)

As a Toronto FC fan, it really sucks to see Bradley struggle at the world stage. I feel like it's either that he's being used out of position or he still hasn't recovered from his injury since he came back pretty quickly and then left for the U.S. camp.
Bradleys performance was frustrating to say the least. He's not as sharp as we need him to be in the mid field

Actually felt a bit gutted for you guys when Portugal scored..

I think the US will get through anyway, both Ghana and (especially) Portugal have to score a lot of goals to be safe. Predictions:

Germany - USA: 4-1
Ghana - Portugal: 4-4

I would like it if Germany lost though, would make the road easier for France ;)

Let them enjoy it, though. If it's supporting the sport and giving it more exposure, why does it matter? This is like arguments in the game threads. They're not real gamers because of X, Y, and Z.

And even though we might be in the minority, shitting on us doesn't really do anything but drive new people from the sport. :/

That's OK. But I don't think that's enough... I'm hoping for more (more informative NON World Cup coverage on ESPN for example)

They move to DETROIT! WHHAAAA???

Seriously. Soccer is a blaze in every other third world city across the world. Why not here?

Plus then I could go back to occasionally attending MLS games.

ESPN doesn't have contracts any more. Champions League is on Fox Sports(with international broadcasts until the end of the tournament), Bundesliga is on Fox, EPL is on NBC Sports, La Liga is on BEIN, etc.

Not quite. The next tiebreaker is goals scored, but I didn't want to make it too hard to understand.

Ger 1 - USA 0 : USA GD=0, GS=4, Pts in US-Gha=3
Gha 1 - Por 0 : Gha GD=0 GS=4, Pts in US-Gha=0

USA advances.

Ger 3 - USA 2 : USA GD=0, GS=6, Pts in US-Por=1, GD in US-Por=0, GS in US-Por=2
Gha 0 - Por 4 : Por GD=0, GS=6, Pts in US-Por=1, GD in US-Por=0, GS in US-Por=2

Draw lots for who advances.

For reference:
Shit that's too complex... pretty sure someone's gonna screw up the maths and USA will move on by mistake and no one will notice. If it's a computer, well, where are the computer chips sourced from? Exactly.

LA already has 2 MLS teams, how many teams do they really need?

If the MLS really wants to grow, they need to put teams in other cities too.

Did you hear the one about Bradley?

They tried to execute him by hanging but his head missed.

Tried to draw and quarter him, but both his feet missed.

I'm with you man. I too liked football before it became all mainstream.

It's just going to take time. Look at the NHL; MLS is still a young league and over time people will become more and more engrossed in it. With that, more money going into the league and teams which will bring in better talent.

I'd love to see MLS actually be something worth while to watch and follow. It's getting there, and I hope someday I'll finally have my soccer/hockey top league tandem to rely on for actual good sport.

Hope my sarcasm meter isn't broken...

That was a good, really tense game. Other than the first ten minutes, and fucking up at the very end, I think US was the better team the majority of the game and deserved to win, but I guess it's just karma since we really didn't deserve the win against Ghana. Really impressed by how we played after that first 10 minutes though.

Really hope we manage to tie Germany, but I'm not sure that's really realistic. It's looking really good for Ghana to advance right now. Germany will probably beat us by multiple goals, and in that scenario Ghana only has to win by any amount to advance. If we lose to Germany even by 1 goal and Ghana beats Portugal by more than 1 (which is not at all unlikely) then we're also fucked.

Not gonna be too upset if Ghana advances though. They're a good team.
