Wow never really thought of him like that, but that would be ridiculous. If his speed and quickness could transfer over on the pitch it would have been a sight to behold. I'm just happy that the sport is growing here. I feel like in my life time the U.S. is going to start fielding a legitimate team.

I don't think it's ridiculous to say they are already legitimate. If you are fielding a borderline top 10 team based on rankings, I can't see how you shouldn't be viewed as legitimate. GAF would have you believe otherwise, though.

The defense has actually been good outside of stupid mistakes by two players.

You can't have a good defense if two of your back four are playing shit/stupid, despite the efforts of the rest of the team, that's just a straight-up contradiction.

Since we're talking what if's, if football was China's #1 sport and the had proper player development then they'd probably be pretty fucking good, considering a population size of 1.3 billion and all.

No one is really saying take LeBron James and move him to soccer and he's instantly goat. What we are saying is that if those guys played soccer their entire lives the talent pool would be far larger than it is now to choose from. Eventually some of those players would be on the same caliber as Messi, Ronaldo, etc.
How dare you.

U.S. defense is fine. The midfield though…

It's hard for people who mostly follow soccer to contextualize other world championships like basketball in the olympics or the WBC. Unlike the World Cup, the best players in the world often are not a part of those competitions because the teams that pay them don't want them to be or, in some cases, the players themselves can't be bothered.

I've just been through this so many times that it's depressing. People keep hoping that with good performance in a world cup MLS will improve, but honestly I can't see that happening. There's simply not enough time for commercial breaks in a soccer game for it to be huge in the US.

The MLS has been in an upswing every year I believe and the US is getting more diverse especially via the hispanic population. I think in 10-15 years it could definitely challenge the 2nd and 3rd most popular sports in the US.

Yeah, but if Germany wins and Ghana wins, goal differential between US and Ghana will at best be tied (both 0) but NEVER favour the US. Given those results (both Gs win), any victory over a single goal difference means game over for the US.
Not quite. The next tiebreaker is goals scored, but I didn't want to make it too hard to understand.

Ger 1 - USA 0 : USA GD=0, GS=4, Pts in US-Gha=3
Gha 1 - Por 0 : Gha GD=0 GS=4, Pts in US-Gha=0

USA advances.

Ger 3 - USA 2 : USA GD=0, GS=6, Pts in US-Por=1, GD in US-Por=0, GS in US-Por=2
Gha 0 - Por 4 : Por GD=0, GS=6, Pts in US-Por=1, GD in US-Por=0, GS in US-Por=2

Draw lots for who advances.

For reference:
Wikipedia said:
The ranking of teams in each group is based on:

  1. Points in all group matches, with three points awarded for a win, one point for a draw and none for a loss.
  2. Goal difference in all group matches
  3. Goals scored in all group matches
  4. Points in matches between tied teams
  5. Goal difference in matches between tied teams
  6. Goals scored in matches between tied teams
  7. Drawing of lots

Last year? You know theres more than just the olympics when it comes to international basketball right?

The only international basketball competitions that matter are the Olympics and FIBA World Cup. The USA typically sends their B or C squads and still do great. When they do send their A squad, they dominate. I'm not even sure how anyone can argue this.

The thing is I'm interested in BOTH games how are you guys going to do it?

I don't have 2 TVs well I kinda do but need to get cable with 2 ESPNs

Steam univision on computer and watch ESPN on TV.

Or watch one on your phone.

I think it would be kinda unenjoyable to watch both at the same time though

I don't know what you mean by american bandwagon like you are trying to put down US fans who are interested. Let them be interested even if they don't know a lot goddamn. People are so bitter about other nation's fans.

Thank you, I hate reading it. I've been a fan of the sport for a long time. It's just not as big here, yet that disparages us from being fans of it? Any world class tournament will bring out more people because it's a point of pride to root for a national team. Football snobs are the fucking worst sometimes.

Yeah, that's one thing I wanted to add. Mexico needs to take over faster :)

Thats not how football works m8, you need it buried in yur culture to succeed.

Exactly. This isn't about USA USA. It's about population, facilities and sports development, and statistics. USA isn't the all time Olympic medals leader because we have magic athlete DNA. We have a huge talent pool and development. So many salty euros.

I'm not against people who are fans. But lets be honest here. Those are clearly minority :)

I can bet that many US "fans" knew only one played on the pitch during US - Portugal game and his name was Ronaldo. (And he was one of the worst :))
