iOS Gaming June 2014: A Comfy Beach of Sunshine and Screen Glare!

Uh?
What World is this????

Everyone has its tastes but....Bastion is by no means terrible.
Actually I think it's a real masterpiece....one of the best story telling recent experiences.

PITTA RAGED FOR A WHILE.

Today released a pretty good surprise called Love Connection for iPhone (Universal update coming soon), it is a connect the dots with a line gameplay but with to much charm and personality that is blowing my mid away. Indie gaming at its best.

I'm not sure if there is a thread of the very best iOS games in a particular genre so I thought I would ask here.

Does anyone have a suggestion of a good online, async, game that resembles Advance Wars? I really loved those games and a multiplayer online iOS clone would be amazing.

If not what are some similarly awesome turn-base strategy games, that aren't TOO in-depth and a bit easier to pick up and learn for more casual play?

Does anything along those lines exist?

There’s this game on the horizon. Looks like our best bet for an Advance Wars style ios game.

Started playing FTL on my iPad, pretty solid port so far. Haven't played it since it came out on PC long ago.

I, too, would ignore Bastion like the plague. What an annoying experience that was as it did nothing but annoy me what with the constant narrator/ exposition, bland combat, and convoluted story. IT is everything I DON'T want in a game as far as execution is concerned.

Spoken like someone who didn't make it far enough in the game to enable all the various idols. The game is one of the purest twin-stick shooters I've ever played, if you find it too easy you are playing it wrong. It is incredibly difficult and a very pure arcade-y experience that is anything but bland.

That said I couldn't stand the game on iOS having first played it with a gamepad on PC (and at 60 fps). To me, the gameplay didn't translate well to iOS at all (and the framerate hit to 30fps felt awful), but other people really like it on iOS so I imagine it's just me to some extent on that manner.

If you remember the IOS roguelike Shattered Planet, it's coming to Steam next month:http://store.steampowered.com/app/305640/
Paid, no microtransactions

this is shamefully underappreciated...

anyone mess with plundernauts? core gameplay seems fine, but im a bit iffy with the f2p bits.

Wish the gamplay had auto-fire once you were in range...

Still waiting for that perfect space game to blend f2p with FTL/Out There-like elements with engaging battle/resource management stuff.

Also, CIV REV 2!!! wahoo!!!! (link for anyone who missed the previous post above because of the massive image):

Yeah, it's a great game. I was actually just chatting with the developer, about going from IOS F2P to PC premium, how that affected the game, and how the game might be viewed on PC (since it's going to be $15 on Steam)

Here are the additions in the PC version:
The PC version is absolutely the definitive version, and at least 10 times better than any other version, to be honest. No exaggeration. Aside from the usual improvement of beautiful high-resolution graphics and better (mouse-oriented) usability/controls, it also has a whole new pet capturing system, deeper-yet-clarified combat, a class system, and a Daily Challenge, where everyone in the world has the same random challenge every day, kinda like Spelunky. Plus an extra challenge scenario, damage type, and like 30 new items. It's just... way better... and I thought the old versions were worth at least $15, so... we think people will love it ALMOST as much as we do. :)

Eh, I spent a lot of time with Bastion and while I don't agree with most of those criticisms, the mechanics did nothing for me. The other elements of the game made it worthwhile but I can understand not caring for the game.

Well, it's important to make the distinction of whether or not one played with all the idols on or not. They drastically change the game and its mechanics. I could see how one would argue it's bland with the idols off, the game is simply too easy, and skill isn't a factor. But with all the idols on, enemies are smarter/faster/deadlier and each one you kill explodes in to ticking bombs, you're being chased from every direction, with bullets flying everywhere, and said bombs exploding everywhere. Killing an enemy might create an opening, or it might corner you when the bombs go flying towards you. There's a lot more game to it with all the idols on, and the mechanics of there being 8 or so unique (and they are unique) weapons that you can mix and match two of to create various styles of gameplay is pretty great. Do you want long range, medium range, close range, fast, slow, focused fire, spread fire, etc. And then you have upgrades to said weapons, and the various challenges which getting a perfect score on often requires extremely great reflexes and aim (I think getting a perfect on one of them took me a good 2 hours / 20+ attempts).

how is that on ios though?

kinda wish there was a version on vita or 3ds... liked what i played on pc, but dont' remember why i dropped it.

A bit presumptuous and dismissive. I beat it twice, to fill my curiosity as to how context of narration changes with second play-through and to hunt for cheevos.

Never said it was easy. I was arguing execution, mechanics, etc.

Regardless, I do not want to debate about the game. I'm happy you enjoyed it but it is not far fetched to see that many didn't for similar reasons.

No, you said it was bland, which I was mainly arguing about... the game is anything but bland. That'd be like saying Sonic games are slow platformers. I just don't see how a game that demands your attention non-stop can be described as dull... but like you say enough of that. You don't want to debate it, and definitely have the minority opinion, the music, narrative and gameplay really deliver a great experience in Bastion.

They are abandonware at this point I think.

The Canabalt update gives me hope that some of the older titles will get updated (Dungeon Raid...)

I've played FTL for 10-20 mins on the train this morning and in the tutorial or start of the game they tell you to make sure you explore everything before you jump to the next waypoint. However, I didn't find any options to explore my surroundings. When I used "jump" my current waypoint still said "distress signal". Am I missing something here?

Yeah you can't explore more after each jump. What they means is you should explore each beacon in the sector before reaching the "exit" and warping to the next one. You can't go back, so any unexplored dots will remain lost opportunities (or lucky escapes).

Even though it can all go wrong, you generally want to hit as many locations as possible before the "timer" of the enemy fleet catches up to you (so plan out a route of jumps that will get you to as many as possible without backtracking or getting cornered). This way you will have the maximum scrap, crew and upgrades possible to attack the more difficult sectors later on.

Clash of heroes might and magic has taken me away from wayward souls, really enjoying so far. Uppercut football is also really fun.

I wish wayward and mage gauntlet had iCloud save support, I really like it with battleheart and clash of heroes. Any reason the dev doesn't support it ?

Trigger
iTunes | Trailer
Trigger is a party game for 1-4 players. Each player has their own button that controls a little running/driving dude. Your goal is to take out all the other players and be the last one standing. The trick is that you can only turn right by pressing your button. Every character starts with his/her own tank as a tool for eliminating their opponents. You can turn and shoot bullets at the same time. If you get hit by another tank while driving you fly out of it and land on the ground. While grounded you are in trouble if you do not hurry your way back to an empty tank. A hit while running around is fatal. There are different types of levels and power-ups that mixes up the gameplay. Trigger is best played with your human friend but the game also features computer bot players so that you can have a fun time practising on your own.

I first learned about Trigger today and it has quickly became one of my favorite same-screen multiplayer games since Wrestle Jump.

Essentially each player (or player if you're fighting bots) has a button in a corner of the screen; tapping it simultaneously rotates your tanks 90 degrees and shoots a projectile. This simple control scheme makes what could have been mindless arena combat into a hectic game of skill, positioning, timing, close calls, and near misses as you evade enemy shots and plan out your movements. Power-ups grant you abilities such as laying down mines in your wake and bouncing projectiles, adding more strategy to the gameplay. Getting hit isn't the end; instead you find yourself on foot, forced to race back to an empty tank. The graphics are charming and colorful, as you fight among everyday items like pencils and erasers (all of which are physical objects and can be pushed around).

Trigger can be played against AI bots, and solo, the game is still pretty fun, but of course the best experience is fighting against other people. I recommend checking Trigger if you're looking for a fun multiplayer game or just something fast and hectic to play when you have a few minutes to spare.

Mine Quest (free), seems like it might be a decent time waster if you enjoy the exploring aspect to Dungelot, this looks to expand on that in a fairly decent way. It has huge spanning levels instead of tiny multi-level dungeons. So you get a single 80x80 level instead of 50 8x8 levels or whatever.

It still has occasional enemies mixed around, that work like in Dungelot 1, and it also has a crafting system where the blocks you break give you resources to craft better items from recipes you find while exploring. There's an overworld that acts as a hub with different continents to explore, each continent containing a bunch of mines (with large explorable maps). There's even items to collect and turn in, and you gain levels and find gold etc.

The F2P aspect seems to be mainly an energy system, that's not horrible if you're just looking to waste a little time now and then (to me playing this sort of game in a 8-hour stretch straight would just be boring anyway). 200 energy (they actually start you at 500 so you get to play a bit before running down), and you can find more energy while mining, and it recovers fairly fast. So maybe worth a look if you enjoyed the exploring / uncovering tiles aspect to Dungelot / Disco Zoo as much or more than the rest of the games.

Looks like that Monsters Ate My Birthday Cake game comes out tonight for $3.99.

An origami folding puzzle game called Paperama comes out tonight, too. Played a bit of it and it's pretty great, at least to someone like me who doesn't even know the first thing about origami. Free with IAP for hints.

King of Dragon Pass received an update with 15 new scenes, new illustrations, more advice, among other changes. Gonna check it out
