Ah I got ya. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
No need to apologize. I'm the one who should be apologizing lol.

Sorry about that.
I disagree with your link alt statement. Just because it's in the game for 10 minutes doesn't make it any less important or memorable. The only thing that matters is how much of an impact it has on player's memories. If it's memorable to a lot of players (like toon link's pajamas... disregarding the new game mode where he wears it the whole time), then it is a valid alternate costume.
My point really wasn't it being memorable, but being significant. Poor word choice on my part, but I did make a post earlier using the word significant.

I don't think Link's normal clothes are significant outside of Toon Link's pajamas because of the second quest.

You're right about time not being that much of a factor, though it ignores how they are advertised and such. You see Link in his green tunic all of the time. Samus in her Varia Suit. They may not start off with it or can replace it soon, but it is their main look.

There are only two characters in Skyward Sword that are in Smash as playable characters. They are Link and Zelda. Zelda is not even in her typical attire of purple/white dress. The characters are also in a stylistic fantasy art-style.

Last time all of the Zelda characters (referring to Brawl and excluding Toon Link) appeared together is Ocarina of Time, however, Twilight Princess has a design for Sheik, so it can be said that the last time all of the Zelda characters had designs from the same game is Twilight Princess. They all also happen to be the most commonly advertised look for them.

Sure SS has Impa and Demise that look similar to their corresponding characters, but they aren't Sheik or Ganondorf.

It is actually special that Link has a costume with the coloration of Link's normal clothes in Skyloft. The team didn't need to do that.

Some of Arc's games come to mind, with Blazblue selling alternate colors as DLC and P4A selling the glasses (ugh), but that's basically the extent of my fighting game experiences so that's good to know.

Those are 2d games though, and they have alternate colors by default, and just sell more colors, isn't that it? It'd be the equivalent of paying, for say, the Dark Link skin from SSBB, not paying for actual alternate costumes.

[post=83912637]If they want to go crazy with the Toon Link colours I have a few suggestions[/post]

If there is one idea that I wanted that I knew would never come it would have been a way to make your own alt palettes with a method to select fixed spots i.e. Mario's hat, gloves, top, dungarees and shows and change the colours. A bit like The Last Story's (if you haven't played it do so now) armour mode.
The heck is that last one (post-LA:DX Link) supposed to reference? BS Zelda or something?

Past 12 hours have been a pretty good argument for the destruction of the Smash thread.
That sounds like an overreaction to an overreaction, personally.

Incorrect--Melee's character designs were all taken from Ocarina of Time but there was no Ocarina of Time stage. Young Link even used his Ocarina of Time design despite one of the two Zelda stages being taken from Majora's Mask.

You've got me there. Regardless, OoT Link and MM Link are one and the same so it still kind of fits. Bingo for Wind Waker and Spirit Tracks from a character design perspective.

But you're right - it's not an absolute requirement, I just think it's a little strange. I would have preferred an alternate outfit entirely over little more than a palette swap, but at least we got something.

lol, what

link looks fine, he looks like an elf

Eww no. His art is fine. His in-game model is ugly butts

His face is too round, his eyes are too... big? I'm not good at putting my thoughts into words sometimes but his in-game model is really... off.

I know Toon Link seems to be keeping his lame Final Smash, but how would you guys feel if his Final Smash was Four Swords themed? It could either be like Mega Man's where it is a cutscene with the four Link's wrecking whoever got hit, or it could be a transformation one where you run around the stage with quadruple power and new moves.

I like the design but his mouth could be a little higher.

His eyes and face are too round, yeah. It's just horribal.

Technically, their hair is wider and their dress also gives them a slightly bigger silhouette compared to the shirt. It should make no difference in the end gameplay-wise, but in a previous message you were talking like giving Link a different outfit would be a big enough change that would cause problems, and it really wouldn't be any worse than that.

Look again. The male villagers have large ears, where the female villagers have wide hair. The make villagers have flared shirts, while the female villagers have short dresses so the flaring is at the same level.

The point being that removing Link's hat from the model might affect his hurtbox, so they'd have to alter his hair to compensate.

They could have removed the armguards and given him long sleeves on the tunic though, without it being an issue.

It's amazing to me they can put custom moves in but claim costumes are too much effort... like, really?

Which one will contribute to it being a better game though? I'll go with the custom moves personally.

I wouldn't say actual alternate costumes are completely disconfirmed at this point since there's a slim chance they could start offering them as DLC, but it's something Nintendo is still new to and I've always held firm to the idea that it simply wouldn't, and doesn't need to happen from the start.

I will say, today's flurry of salt has been quite amusing, but these kind of recolours are what I think we can expect in lieu of seeing references to other characters or forms outside of those exceptional few. If Namco somehow play a part in convincing Sora to follow the general fighting game business model with DLC skins and the like, I'd be very surprised.

Can we get over Link already?

No one is gonna care about that like a minute after the game is out.

If screenshots/videos are easily shared all over the internet (similar to how mario kart is doing) then I will be sad every time I see his ugly face.

Alt skin not being an alt costume doesn't bother me. It's minimal effort fanservice.

Okay, If Smash TV is one of Wii U feature then I will use Link to spite everyone in this forum. :P

People think Link's model looks good? Talk about having a wrong opinion

Seriously, too wide everything.

Look again...

The female villager has an ear just as big as the male one, but her big side hair covers it. Also, the flaring of the shirts and dresses isn't on the same level.

Really, did you ever look at Brawl's hit boxes? They weren't exactly 1:1 with the models.

The best Smash commentator ever and the kindest, most agreeable ambassador for the scene, Prog aka Progducto, is retiring after EVO due to health issues. Same reason why he was frequently absent from the booth at MLG.

Even for those that don't enjoy competitive Smash, Prog was the touchpoint for Nintendo to reach out to in order to put together the E3 Invitational. Prog made the list of players for Nintendo to choose from. He's that important to Smash Bros., and his voice will be missed.
