Shovel Knight |OT| The 8-bit adventures of Butt Butt Goes to Europe & Australia

Just a guess:
Do you unlock Shield Knight later on and get to see the same dream with Shovel Knight needing to be caught?

I am not sure of any plans to make Shield Knight playable and the dream sequences are foreshadowing something, all I can say at this stage.

Anyone crafted the Shovel Knight Steam badge? Got a pretty badass background for my profile:

Saw someone say they got a feat for breaking all the save sphere so I tried it on Spectral Knight level. Bad idea I ended up replaying the board so many times I eventually had to quit. Plus I eventually broke them all and did not get a feat. Overall the game is brilliant the work they put into this is amazing!!

You have to break every checkpoint in the game to get that feat.

Aww what the hell? I can't even download the game I backed? I have to wait for an official EU release? That's weak man, I was really looking forward to playing the game today and now my code is worth jack shit?

Oh, and if anyone wants a Shovel Knight booster pack on the house, send me a trade offer and I'll give it to the first person.

EDIT: Given away.

Willing to buy an EU code from someone if they bought one for 3ds or wii u and don't want to wait. PM me, please.

I really can't wait to play this game again tonight. It's so so good. Also, regarding buying armor:
is Ornate armor just as it says? Just for looks? I just wasn't sure cause it says, "acrobatic" in the description"
?

Why is the consensus that te WiiU version is better? Because of the added content? The 3DSgameplay looked pretty good. Seems like the ideal place to play the game.

You really can't go wrong with either version.

There's no general consensus. They're all the same game with minor, but nice, unique features. The 3DS has the streetpass game and 3d layers. The Wii U has a Dark Souls-esque message system. The Steam version has cards.

Not sure if that's the consensus... I'm playing on 3DS and it's awesome! Portable Touch screen inventory is nice. 3D actually looks great~ Obviously bigger screen has its benefits, but I wouldn't say one is better than the other.
Only a very rough estimation but from what I've read on here, Twitter and Miiverse it seems like for every ten people buying the game, about eight are getting it on Wii U. Certainly whenever someone asks which to get it on the immediate response seems to be Wii U.

Got the 3DS version. Played two levels, got a bunch of relics and did two random map encounters. So far it's really, really good. I can safely say it's among eShop top tier games, like Steamworld Dig, Pushmo and Gunman Clive. All that is left is to see how long it is before giving it GOAT status.

BTW, the 3D is hot (it's awesome like the Sega 3D classics, but deeper like Mutant Mudds). I also appreciate they made the music and sounds loud (and they can be made even louder in the options), so it's entirely possible to play on speakers.

without playing either version or knowing the console specific features I'd say the Wii U would be the version to get if only for the better control options. playing this game with the gamepad or pro controller's dpad sounds much better than playing with the 3DS' dpad.

Fuck this game is so fucking good. I love how the 3D effect is done on the 3DS version. Makes everything super clear and distinguishable!

I think I'm going to double dip and snag a Wii U copy too when it comes up tomorrow. Game is just plain great.

Now this was the post I wanted. Makes me feel justified for opting for 3DS. Only thing now making me lean towards Wii U is the premium/deluxe points, but that's a bonus rather than a necessity.

From the latest KS e-mail, they also had this to say

Platform Changes: We tried to hold off as long as possible, but at this point platform choices are absolutely locked in. We cannot consider platform changes once you have received a platform code since we have method to verify whether your copy of the game has been redeemed. For Nintendo Backers who are not in the NA region: we can still process platform requests since codes have not yet been requested.

So if Europeans don't want to wait, they will still process a platform change request if you want to change to Steam, it seems.

The impressions for this game read like borderline hyperbole, but I'll be damned if it isn't true. This is pure bliss, and I can honestly say it has little to do with nostalgia. The NES aesthetic is nice, but I've played a handful of independent games that use the style as a method of gauging interest and hardly any of them actually felt as authentic as this game does.

The gameplay here is just terrific, and the level design keeps getting better and better. I'm on a stage now that has gotten me killed more than any other stage (which still isn't a lot or anything) and I find myself not really caring because the mechanics are a lot of fun and it allows me to revisit screens where I missed secrets. The boss fights are pretty straightforward but are still fun and some of them have been very close calls. I'm also grateful that the dialogue itself is actually relatively well-written and doesn't try to do that annoying thing that a lot of writers for games like this do where they pack in "cheeky" references that just come off as forced. It's still humorous, pun-filled and light-hearted writing, but it hasn't actually annoyed me yet.

In addition to the main stages, I really enjoy the little campfire interludes and the atmosphere that comes with it. I think these sections make the story feel a little more epic and make the player feel more attached to the main character and journey. The villages are also a welcome addition and don't feel like they're there for the sake of having villages, and it's nice to have towns reminiscent of Zelda II where the townsfolk don't talk to you like you're Simple Jack pretending to be The Riddler. The soundtrack has also been really nice; kind of lacks an identity, but the singular tracks have all been very good. I wish there was more of a theme tying it all together, but that's a nitpick, if that.

Had to request a different code anyway since they sent me one for NA systems. Guess I'll be playing this... when they get around to sending me my new code.

Not sure if we're doing a review thread, but here's a review from one of my staffers at GameSided.com. 9.5/10.

GameSided said:
Shovel Knight may look and play like an old game, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth playing. It’s markedly different from anything that large studios churn out nowadays, but it draws inspiration from a wide range of the best classic games and makes something wholly its own. Shovel Knight is easily the finest and most rewarding game I have played all year.

I want to double-dip and get this for Wii U and 3DS but there's no way to cross-save is there? The game sounds like it may be good enough to play though multiple times though so maybe I'll go Wii U 1st and then 3DS later.

Yeah I was late for work this morning thanks to Shovel Knight. It's just...fun. Like, real fun. Yacht Club brought this together really, really well. Will double dip if only to see additional features.

Probably what I like least about this game.
In the intro, they make Shield Knight seem like a pretty rad lady, and then Shovel Knight's dreams turn her into a damsel to be saved.

Shovel Knight is consumed with guilt about the loss of Shield Knight. Those aren't dreams but nightmares. Anyway gender swap mode is coming out and I'm sure the roles will be reversed.

I guess I have to get this game. Hearing the games that it draws inspiration from reads like a who's who of my favorite games of all time. Zelda II, Metroid, Castlevania, Faxanadu, Megaman, this stuff is gold to me. I can't wait. I think I'll have to go the Wii U route, to make it easier to allow the wife and kids to get in on the fun.
