Okay, we're halfway through the year, what are the media frontunners for GOTY?

I think DKCTF may just be the best 2D platformer ever created, which I consider interesting, but the press won't mention it during GOTY stuff :(

Truth. And it's sad. Honestly, it's healthy to see a wide variety of games represented through the various media outlets, but it's a rarity for that to happen. Last year was a sad example of that.

More than likely Destiny or Evolve. Some will pick some others. I could see mine being DS2, Destiny, or maybe Evolve depending on how good either Destiny or Evolve is.

Up until today? I say Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. A fantastic game all around with some of the best platforming I've ever experienced.

Throughout the year? Super Smash Bros Wii U or Destiny.

Does Evolve come out this year? If so, maybe that given all the attention it got at E3.

Other than that, Destiny. Maybe Dragon Age. Big maybe.

Not much else, unless some downloadable game comes along and sweeps it like The Walking Dead and Journey did in 2012.

For me? Sunset Overdrive is best looking of the games I've seen for this year. With Arkham Knight delayed and all...

A triple-A title with the most exciting "cinematic" experience will win it. You know, a "game" that lets you walk from point A to B for a several minutes, shoot some zombies/aliens/terrorists for a few seconds and then watch a clip for another 5 minutes. Repeat until you see the ending.

10/10!!!

All in glorious 30 fps.

The first half of this year has been pretty mediocre. I finished dark souls 2 twice on two platforms so that has my vote. We live in a year where a b-tier shooter like Wolfenstein that has competent shooting and story mechanics is praised. Dont get me wrong, I liked Wolfenstein but it did have weak parts to it. Its definitely not the best of years for videogames.

I feel like Evolve is going to be one of those games that works great with people you know and fall apart completely with people you don't.

Which is why I think it will win with media (where they play under ideal conditions). It's new, fresh, and relatively innovative. It may not have the ad dollars behind it that destiny does, but the press was way more excited about it. The general consensus around Destiny from the press is "now that we finally know what it is, it's pretty good".

Destiny might, I think MK8 or Smash Bros has a good chance and I don't even own a Wii U.

Personally DAI and Dark Souls 2 will probably be my votes for GOTY.

I doubt it wins that many GOTY's if any at all. I think it will go the same route as L4D. It will win the majority of the Shooter and/or Mutiplayer GOTY's, and get nominated for a few Overall GOTY's but lose all of them as well.
Unless, like I said, nothing this fall can top it.

For me personally, despite Mario Kart 8 and Shovel Knight coming in strong, Tropical Freeze has still got it locked up. I fully expect Smash to be my goty (well, game of the next few years probably) and Hotline Miami 2 could knock Tropical Freeze off the throne as well. I'm really interested in Destiny, but no PC version and me not owning a PS4 or Xbone yet means I won't be playing it this year.

I do fully expect Destiny to largely sweep the media awards though

If it's the former:
There's an outside chance that Titanfall, if managed correctly, or Watch_Dogs could be competitive. There's an extremely small chance Tomodachi Collection or Mario Kart 8 could. Transistor might get a vote. Dark Souls II has a very very very very small chance. Beyond that, I don't think anything out this year is likely to show up in GOTY awards. Slim pickings so far.

If it's the latter:
Battlefield, AC5, Dragon Age 3, and Far Cry 4, Smash Bros. The Witness will be competitive if it gets out in time. Destiny is going to be in the conversation. Captain Toad might be a dark horse if it's executed really well, but it won't have mainstream traction. Evolve apparently got good notice at E3 so who knows.

We must be going to different media outlets.

There's no way Watch Dogs is competitive. Low 80s metacritic and a ton of media backlash has followed it. It is that game where the single reviewer of a website gave it an 8 and then the rest of the site talks shit about it for weeks afterwards. Since most of the media sites' GOTY are picked on votes or consensus, I would be surprised if WD takes even a single major site's GOTY.

Watch Dogs is this year's Assassin's Creed 3 - liked by a self selected reviewer (ie- they nominated themselves to review it because they were predisposed to like it) and loathed by most of the rest of staff.

I think Titanfall has a Battlefield 3's chance in getting a GOTY. A small bump because it's a new IP, but multiplayer only stuff tends to get shunned by enthusiast press. And it has the stink of missed expectations.

Dark Souls 2 has gotten the reception of "good, but not as good as it could have been", which over time has degenerated to "what a terrible game, BLOODBORNE FTW RETURN OF THE KING LOL B TEAM" which it doesn't deserve. It'll probably end up as, say, #5 on every site's top 10 list.

There's no way of calling what the next two quarters will be as far as perception goes. I've found the media to be just as fickle with what they hype and tear down as forums. All of the games coming out have a large chance of being terrible, either to media, fans, or both.

I think the ones with the biggest shots at being GOTY are the new, big budget IPs: Destiny and Evolve, or indie emotional games.

Sequels to long running franchises almost never get Game of the Year nods from media unless they actually change something up (like, say, COD4). Quality installments of franchises get noticed but rarely win.

My predictions:
-Far Cry 4 will be considered "a really good expansion pack".
- Dragon Age 3 is a massive crap shoot. It could be amazing or terrible. So little has actually been shown and media has been mum on it.
- AC has been going on too long to win, but if it plays well, it could rank. I think people are just burnt out.
- Smash Bros will be ignored
- Toad's game will be a lot of sites' runner up (just like every Nintendo game)
- Ditto for MK8
- Evolve will have staunch supporters but will lose out due to multiplayer focus (and "Play your fucking class")
- Destiny will win a lot of awards (barring woeful server issues) with a huge backlash about 1) all people want are shooters 2) doesn't offer anything new 3) gamers are stupid 4) etc

These are my guesses on what media will think in a zeitgeist sense, not my own opinions.

I'd love it to be Shovel Knight but suspect the big console releases will vastly overshadow it. I reckon Destiny will bag it due to a reasonable attempt at pushing a genre forward. Mario Kart 8 is also awesome but won't win either.

Destiny's probably the frontrunner for the media, but I'm personally more interested in Far Cry 4 than it. The setting of Far Cry appeals to me more, but Destiny definitely looks amazing too.

I think most will forget about Titanfall when they lay their hands on Destiny's full experience.

Hence it'll trump Titanfall for GoTY

Oh, yeah, Far Cry 4 looks really interesting. The mountains are nice, and the villain seems interesting, and then oh my fucking God am I really climbing up another mountain tower to reveal filler-quest icons on my minima-ZzzZZzZzzzzzz

Mine will probably end up being the Master Chief Collection, so much awesomeness.
But I'm guessing it will be Destiny or Assassin's Creed. That co op might make AssCreed a great game. I know it will for me. Im huge on co op, good year with a lot of games having co op.

Captain Toad

Toad's first game, those glorious little diorama levels, interesting level design / puzzles, unconventional bosses, etc.. plus it's pretty much the only interesting game on Wii U this year makes it a lock to appear on GOTY lists.
Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta 2, and Smash Bros. don't stand a chance.

It's a really, really disappointing year, isn't it? I suppose 2015 will be incredible to make up for it.

I'd like to think Mario Kart 8 will get some consideration. I've rarely seen a game build up that amount of slow-burn prerelease hype and then deliver on it entirely. That or Destiny, but we still don't know if that'll be any good.

Unfortunately I'd guess Destiny. Maybe I'll like it but I'm not into the online shooters so who knows.

After that I'd guess Far Cry 4 and Smash. These are the two I think could unseat Wolfenstein as my personal GOTY.

I hope something else entirely comes along and is at least a contender. Shadow Of Mordor, some awesome indie-ish game...something. This year is so boring haha.

I just hope the media realises they are choosing the game of the year instead of cinematics of the year.

My bet is on Destiny.

Has anyone mentioned Divinity: Original Sin yet? No?

Well, I guess it's not out until Monday but goddamn, the first quarter of the game is the best RPG we've seen in years. Not that the press will notice. Ah well.

Just another year we can all watch the media ignore some of the best games of the year because they're not AAA, don't have a large marketing push, don't appear on consoles, or don't appeal to a broad audience.

Might & Magic X - Legacy is probably one of the best games of the year so far, it certainly is my favorite so far, and I doubt it will even get mentioned within the nominees for RPGs. I expect Divinity: Original Sin to be even better, and possibly one of the best RPGs in years but because it doesn't meet certain criteria it will likely be ignored all the same.
