Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 announced, up for preorder (based on Crystal Cove)

So after reading the latest Polygon article and seeing the pictures in the legal documents, it dawned on me that I actually own the very first Rift prototype(the one in the pics). It's labeled PR1 and the shell is an old Liquid Image MRG, and Palmer had the foresight to label it and sign it. This was back in 2010 when I asked Palmer if he could mod one of my HMDs, and he took it a step further by basically re-doing everything about it.

When I get it out of storage, I'm thinking of making a thread about it and possibly putting a video up to show people what it's like.

Shit'll be worth big bucks in like 20 years or something bro.

That is fucking awesome

That's really cool! I'd love to see some pictures or a video.

Just a friendly reminder ahead of time for anyone wanting to track the delivery of their DK2 orders. Oculus is likely going to use UPS for delivery to most (if not all) locations in the US, but in case they use FedEx for some deliveries, you might want to consider creating an account ID on both websites in order to be notified of any impending deliveries. With UPS, you sign up for MyChoice. With FedEx, you sign up for an ID and with both, you set your delivery notifications on their respective websites.

Unless you are a dev, wait for cv1.

Or say "fuck it" and enjoy Elite Dangerous in VR ASAP, like me!

Do they typically ship with a signature requirement?

Since it's expensive equipment that would probably be typical. For the devkit 1 I may have asked for delivery to the local UPS store instead.

It was funny since I walked in to pick it up and the UPS worker was like "Oh you got one too?" and held up his own devkit that had just arrived.

That is too wicked. Lol

In a month, as in when the Beta actually drops, like on the 29th? That would be perfect.

Yes, the regular beta starts on July 29th. Access to that beta is $75.

The lifetime expansion pass will no longer be sold once this beta goes live. It's currently ~$60. Depending on how well the game does, this may or may not save you money in the long run.

Mmm, I might still spring the $150 for the alpha access, tbh. I feel good about supporting my own industry. Right now, the VR community is one big happy family.

Indeed!

For a game like E:D which I know I will play for a long time, and has great VR support, I thought it was worth it. Plus, a lot of that expansion content looks pretty essential to me, so I was perfectly content getting the expansion pass up front.

“Shockingly realistic” virtual cooking technology to revolutionise food

A technology that allows users to accurately simulate preparing food from scratch in remarkable detail is set to change a multitude of industries and activities around food.

Developed by Starship, the digital entertainment studio founded by games industry veteran Martin Kenwright that is also developing wearables for dementia sufferers, the technology allows users to interact with and cook virtual ingredients just as if they were using the real thing.

Sounds pretty next-gen to me. The ingredients you pick in-game behave like real ingredients would had you used real food. Also, I would submit for debate the following quote, which I believe hints at Oculus Rift support:

“People thought it was out of a magazine. No, some coder’s just stirred that up and poured it in a plate from raw vegetables,” said Kenwright.

“We’re using some of the best rendering techniques in the world – stuff used in Lord of the Rings – like sub-surface scattering and texture and all physical-based lighting.”

However, Kenwright is holding back on some CyberCook details at present, and said that the “full reveal” would happen within a month or two.

“The real secret of this is we want to keep under wraps what the platform is, but it’s the biggest jump in the sector since CD-ROM,” explained Kenwright. “You’re not looking at something, you’re not watching the video, you’ll actually be doing something that’s never ever been done before.”

Anyone in this thread discussed this yet? I'd totally play this despite the fact it's not a 'game,' perse. Imagine a virtual kitchen, you're standing in front of the stove, and you're cooking in VR.

Nice, you certainly seem to know your stuff, you'll probably be a great guest.

Thanks, I also post under the name "TheSonicRetard" over on reddit of you guys follow that forum. That's where I normally post in fact.

EDIT: Ah, just found out there is no show next week due to the 4th of july, so I'll be appearing on the show the week after next.

Whoa. Cooking Mama VR confirmed to be the Rift's killer app.

That talk about lotr level rendering tech, physical based lighting...Jesus. I do think creating confined environments where you can up the detail to a crazy degree will be key to making good VR experiences. Color me interested.

Edit: Took a look at Martin Kenwright's wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Kenwright) to see what he's done. Talk about a shift in genres, he created "World Rally Championship" for PS2 and also the Motorstorm games. He also made some early flight sims for PC, Atari ST, and Amiga systems. Of all the VR sims I'd expect this guy to pursue, cooking is not among them. If the PR hype speak in regards to graphical fidelity is true, I will laugh myself silly if one of the most cutting edge real time 3D applications we have is focused on preparing recipes. Curious what sort of controller/tracking solutions they're using. Might have to make a google alert for this one.

Meh, original article here http://www.cnet.com/news/facebook-learning-the-costs-of-consumer-hardware-with-oculus/ and that one isn't much better. Seems like a clickbait article, no one specifically is mentioned neither the execs in question nor the "source" claiming their eyebrows are raised. Most of the article is a recap of Oculus' history, and a quote from somebody not afilliated with either company saying basically "developing hardware costs mucho". You don't say?

I'm not too concerned for them even if some suits are getting a bit ruffled, doesn't Zuck call the shots anyway? As in nobody is going to be able to "vote" Oculus out of the picture?

Let's hope there's no 2015 headline that's like "Facebook pays $2 billion dollars to buy Oculus, cancels it because it was too expensive."

There's no quotes or actual information that shows some new concern Facebook execs have about Oculus.
Pretty sure CNET have just pulled this story out of their arse.

Yeah. Even if they didn't though, it doesn't matter. Zuckerberg has full control.

Yup. It'll happen.

I can imagine some of the board being a bit surprised by the costs, simply because Facebook has never really created any hardware before, and they probably don't have a lot of experience with it. They just look at the numbers, especially pre-release, where it's all expenses with little or no income (do we know if they're subsidizing the dev kits at all?), and some of them may be freaking out a little. But it was going to be this way, Zuckerberg knew it. You can't just magic something like this into existence. While my initial reaction to the acquisition was negative, I now think of it pretty positively because they bring not only the money, but also an expanded look at what VR can be used for, far beyond gaming. Honestly, I think in another ten years or so, gaming will actually be the niche use for VR.

Anyway, I did order a DK2 the other day. And Unity... I actually would like to try my hand at making something, but I make no guarantees at anything beyond one room with a box in it.. hehe.

Ordered these parts to upgrade for DK2:

i7-4790K
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
GIGABYTE GA-Z97X-UD3H
EVGA GTX 780 Ti Superclocked

Can't wait! :)

Well, maybe GM210 will drop in time for the final product? That would be nice. Already going to dig deep in my pockets for a Browadell processor and new system around Christmas time. It'll be nice to give my wallet some cool-off time in 2015.

As far as computer performance goes, from what I've read the consumer version will want / require a higher constant FPS than DK2, correct?

DK2 seems to be happy with 60 but I've hears them talk about 75,90+for consumer.

Thanks.

Ultimately 60fps on the Rift 2 will be much the same as the first Dev kit. Thing though is, 75hz is preferable in general, thus, "it will want higher framerate". It's not that 60 will be subpar to devkit 1, it's that 75hz is a jump from it.
