The Greek penalty against Ivory Coast was quite clearly not a penalty, Samaras tripped himself up and was wrongly awarded the penalty that allowed Greece to scrape by. Robben's penalty on the other hand was clearly a penalty. Did he oversell it yes but it was still a penalty.

wat. greece was a legit pen.

I want the people saying it wasn't a penalty and that Robben had dived, to go put on some shoes and have one of your friends stomp on your toes with cleats. If you're not on the floor in pain, you've earned my respect. Regardless of Robben "selling" it, it's clear the Mexican player stomps on his toes. Trust me, that shit is painful.

Meh. After seeing it a quadrillion times we can agree it was a foul, bit harsh to give it a penalty, though not wrong. I would be thinking something very differently if I were the coach of a losing side after seeing it only from afar though.

Its karma I think. First half was 200% pen we didn't get. Before that both Spain and Australia got a free pen against us. Same for bullshit RVP yellow which cost him the third game.

We aren't exactly being carried by the refs this tourney.

It doesn't.

That's the equivalent of a law on the books in some country about being allowed to beat your wife every 3rd Wednesday aka not used and pointless.

So unless you want to go educate the referees you are wrong.
Really? You trying to say the laws of football aren't relevant and the equivalent of 'dumb laws'

How about a gif that doesn't cut out the actual foul? My god, the salt in here.

That is a great job of Robben to bait and also sell. It was a foul and the rest is history.

I also like the celebration after the PK where Huntelaar kicks the flag and goes into the crowd. Such power.

Look how easily his foot pulls away from the Mexican players foot. He was not stomped on and barely impeded.

You also had a defender kick a guy in the face...

Clear foul. 100% penalty shot

Not all contact is a foul, especially not for a penalty.

Do people only watch football in the world cup?

If it wasn't given no one would care about that soft contact not being a penalty, but it was given so people are trying so hard to justify it being a penalty.

Bad challenge, soft contact, amazing 10/10 gymnast dive.

I am an unbiased non-mexican person, giving people the facts.

All people do is moan about my evidence. I show facts; not moan.

No you're not.

And Herrera shouldn't bitch about the referee when the Netherlands didn't get a clear penalty during the first half. Mexico had the match until they said "please Holland come and attack us".

Not this again. Samaras didn't trip himself up. Sio caught his left while he was lining up his shot.

lmao I had to reply to Gael, either he's trolling or he really is that salty. If he is serious then wow, he is immature.

It's a playful image, I don't understand how some mexicans are willing to parade themselves around the world in their charro outfits and mexican paraphernalia, but woe is them! if anyone else depicts them with a sombrero and the whole enchilada. Like, get real.

Just got back from watching the game. God damn that was clutch.
Also laughing at all the butt hurt comments in here. That penalty was well deserved, and especially after getting denied a clear penalty in the first half.

It's still not 100% conclusive in my opinion. Certainly close enough to be up for debate (especially calling it so late in the game) and there's no doubt he exaggerated the contact a lot.
Of course. Robben took great care to make his fall as dramatic as possible. But that Mexican player really did step on his foot, something that many people here fail to see/acknowledge.

Sucks for Mexico though. They played much better in the first half (and we played like shit) but after the 0-1 they let down their guard too much. Second half was ours. But I don't want to imagine how much it stings for Mexican supporters to see your team go down like that :(

Is more about rubbing the salt, specially coming from a corp.

it's not ref's fault, considering the history between Portugal and Netherlands in Euros and Worldcups, you would figure that a Portuguese ref would be bad for the Dutch.

Proença did a decent job today IMO

Welp gonna go watch the game at my uncle's bar with family and friends. Probs better I'm not here considering the hate Greece always gets.

If we win, I'll be back to gloat. If we lose, I'll probably not return :-p

A bit late on this, I knew there were money related problems in the Ghana team https://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/blog...ies-3m-cash-brazil-pay-players-094325281.html.

A huge contrast to the Greek turning down the bonus.

the whole thing about the African nation's players demanding their money early is sad. Are they that worried that they won't see it, or are they just letting ego's get in the way? I'm legitimately curious.

he hit him, but if a player jumps like that, I wouldn't give the foul, no matter how..

(coming from a bayern fan, who thinks robben is an awesome playeR)

I'm Mexican-Dutch, so this match was always going to end in heartbreak.

I thought Mexico was better, but after the 1-0 they gave up on scoring. That was a stupid mistake, because the Dutch have incredible attacking potential. Too bad it had to end with a penalty. Before the match I just hoped it would be a great and fair game. A stupid penalty at the very end feels like an anticlimax. This match deserved extra time.

Well, at least one of my teams is in quarters.

Everyone around me is heartbroken right now, but I have to say, that penalty kick really shouldn't be controversial. Did Robben exaggerate it? Probably, yeah. The ref is as aware of diving as anyone, though, and he did refuse Robben an even more obvious penalty earlier in the game. The challenge was clumsy, a clear foul, *any* player would have fallen one way or another in that scenario, and the ref made a proper call.

It's too easy to overemphasize the dramatic nature of Robben's fall, which it's in actuality probably not even particularly relevant.

Mexico played a really, really good game, but the Netherlands did, as well. They had the better second half overall, after initially playing it slow (probably purposely). They definitely don't move on with "disgrace."

Anyway, not exactly sad to see Netherlands move forward, because I do like them as a team. I am sad, though, to see Mexico lose this way. So close to pulling off something incredible.
