The leg contact came as a result of Samaras' attempted kick, Sio did not challenge him in the least. Samaras went down after he kicked his own leg or the ground as opposed to kicking Sio which he had already done.

You're completely retelling reality.
Sio stretched his leg to challenge him, the gif above is 100% clear. If Sio didn't want to challenge him he wouldn't have stretched his leg. And Samaras tripped as a consequence of the contact.
