Giant Bomb #8 | It's a Hit!

These GB scumbags saw that GI were starting to do long form gameplay video in the form of Testchambers and they immediately head hunted GI's two top players. I can't support this kind of corporate espionage, I'm done with GB.

If we're only posting negative opinions to ridicule them how about we just don't post those opinions.

Also what bombcast it's not tuesday. What the hell is happening here. I DON'T LIKE THIS NEW GIANTBOMB.

Less than 2 hours long!?

Hey, could we maybe not single out and antagonize someone like this? Did you guys not read the last few pages of the thread?

While having someone like Cara Ellison join the site would be great, we have no way of knowing how many people applied or what potential might have prevented them from securing the position. There aren't many people who would work well with the Giant Bomb crew, and Dan seems like a great choice.

I'm not really seeing the contradiction presented in the second tweeting. Acknowledging a need to expand beyond the status quo in order to promote a variety of perspectives doesn't somehow invalidate the urgent need to have a good on-air personality when the site has been struggling (from a content perspective, not anything to do with quality) for a while. I'm sure Jeff is more concerned about what's best for the site in the short term that potentially delaying an already ridiculously lengthy recruiting process when Vinny is now away from the main office as well.

So someone lost an avatar bet. lol

Well, a few women actually talked about applying. But it's clear that they were going to hire Dan from the beginning. I'm not even sure if the video editor position was really "open" either.

This is going to be the new thread rule going forward.

It also applies to derailing the thread over Arthur Gies for absolutely no reason

Well the second person isn't wrong. Not like Patrick had anything to do with the hire though. I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting more diversity on the site, but reading it as anything more than GB hiring a good friend and his colleague is where I disagree with people. Here's for a more diverse guest list in the future though. That would be really disappointing if they missed that.

Also pretty excited for Dan!

I had only seen Zoe Quinn and Cara Ellison mention applying, and neither of them ever seemed like probable candidates. Not because of their gender, but because of logistics (Cara would need to secure a visa and is primarily interested in writing, Zoe is occupied with game development). From my admittedly extremely limited perspective, Dan doesn't seem like someone who would be that controversial of a hire.

Yeah, whilst I'm sure Dan will work well with the guys the way they went about hiring has really opened them up to criticism along with the fact they're always talking about wanting new people for new perspectives and end up hiring long time buddies with similar opinions.

I doubt Patrick even has editorial oversight over hiring positions, so I don't know what really the point of that is

Well okay I guess from the perspective of "GB is talking about this" but... eh?

There was that blog that was linked in the GB forum about the positions where she seems kind of bitter about the fact that the position was never really open.
I'm sure there were many others, including people of colour as well.

I mean, the only reason this was an issue is because they are owned by CBSi and had to announce the positions. I wonder if they were better off not getting anyone's hopes up by having Rorie announce them and talking about them on the podcast, because if this was still the Whiskey Media days, they probably would have just been hired behind the scenes and just appeared randomly on a video or a podcast.

Personally, if we're going to focus on the open call part of this: I'd really like to see Jeff be more transparent about this whole thing sometime soon. He's someone who's generally pretty outspoken about not letting the business/corporate side mess with things, so him talking honestly (if he's able) about some of this would definitely help.

This feels like a question that would get fairly easily dismissed on his tumblr more than anything else. They even joked about it on the podcast for a second before moving onto games (thankfully, because there's no reason to bog down the show with that stuff).

The correct way to go about it is to get diversified perspectives through freelance contributors. The guys on the couch are a very different thing, it has to be like finding a bandmate or something. Who knows whats in store, but anyone making waves about this is just stirring the pot for the sake of it.

I've followed GB about as closely as anyone reasonably could since it opened and they have made great efforts to showcase the breadth of gaming as a culture. Compare the Giantbomb of today to the Giantbomb of 2010 and you'll see the change plain as day. They're pretty keen to the sociological climate of the internet and conversation at large. I see absolutely no reason -whatsoever- why these hires would open them up to criticism.

I think Patrick does that via Worth Reading?

The problem is, I never read the site nowadays and only care about video content. So if it's not a QL or a livestream, it's just something I won't see.

I'm of the opinion that Giant Bomb can't afford to take chances for diversities sake.

The position they were in, they really needed to go the safest route possible.

If it ended up being Jeff, Drew, Brad, and two new people who ended up being duds, for the next year or two, the website would have suffered considerably.

Jason and Dan are the perfect new hires, Dan knows and has chemistry with Jeff, they have lots of experience with the stuff Giant Bomb does in general, and Dan and Jason worked together for years.

What's to be open about? Have you ever worked for a large corporation? He was certainly required by CBS to publicly post the opening and accept applications, that's just how it goes. However, he has no obligation to hire anyone besides the person he intended to hire all along. That's how it goes, there is nothing odd about it. You get jobs at that level through your personal connections, not by submitting a resume to a stranger.

Well, thats firmly in the your problem camp. They can't do anything about the fact you don't visit the site.. except hire some wicked freelance work.

Saying that much would be good!

To be clear, in all of this even if I'm disappointed, it's not like I dislike Dan. I think there's valid reasons to hire a person you know, etc. in the situation they're in. I just think it could have been handled far better than it was, and part of that is talking about how it being presented as open affected people who applied for it thinking it was actually open.

This has been my opinion. The SF "Giant Bomb crew" was down to 3 people, not counting Alexis who I'm not sure where he fits in (think he's more CBSi now instead of GB). Vacations can turn it into a ghost town (well, unless it's Brad's vacation, then they'll have content explosion).

All I'm saying is that anyone who thought Jeff didn't know months ago who he was going to hire was either being incredibly naive, or just didn't understand how a corporate hiring process works. I don't understand why anyone is owed an explanation.

Saying that, though, could violate god knows how many CBSi policies.

Look, we're never going to know exactly how the hiring process went. Point me to any private company that would be willing to go into details about it. You can't, for a myriad of reasons.

Dan and Jason were the ones hired. Sure, you'd like to see more diversity, but you can't argue that they're both really experienced for the position. Hell, I can only think of a handful of people in game journalism who are just as experienced and they're all currently not looking for jobs, as far as I know.

Let's just move forward to hating Dan and Jason for who they are instead of how they were hired.

My phone was stolen on holiday so it's been hard to keep up with this thread.

BUT YAY DAN!!!! Congratulations to Jason as well on the new job. I'm looking forward to this weeks content.

There is absolutely zero incentive for companies to be more open about their hiring processes. Have you worked in corporate america? They tiptoe around EVERYTHING. All of them are scared to death of being sued.

He doesn't owe anyone an explanation. They put out a hiring call and ended up hiring two people. Two highly experienced and legitimate people too. Only the most crazy of observers would see a problem in this.

If anyone who put in an application, expected to get hired and is now hurt that they didn't, that sounds like their issue and not Jeff's.

"Easy game by classic standards" is "well-balanced for modern standards".

If you want to talk about "not making up your mind", how about putting MM2 and 3 on the same level of difficulty? MM2 is a cakewalk compared to MM3.

everything said here is the complete truth. the end of MM3 is a nightmare.
