Giant Bomb #8 | It's a Hit!

if she was doing it for attention she'd leave the post up. I'm sure everyone has said something in an argument that they then immediately wish they could take back.

I don't see why that's a concept that's so hard to understand.
There are now even more tweets and more calling out. Not about the two women who podcasted and started receiving abuse for thoughtful and considered criticism, but about herself and her experience.

What happened this morning on the mods account?

I guess some bad stuff has been going on in the Giant Bomb community. It's always sad to see this kind of stuff happen, especially now. I mean, this should be an exciting time for duders everywhere.

This is also a giant bomb community and the ferver of discussion regarding the new hires has almost crossed the line.

I didn't listen to the E3 shows this year, was Miller belligerent and fighting with everyone like Leigh? I thought he was just being his normal idiotic self?

ugh are people attacking leigh(or someone else) in the name of giantbomb again? sigh

Dear people acting like shit on the internet in the name of Giant Bomb: You don’t represent us or our community. Stop it.

Well the fact that we don't know about them is kind of damning in and of itself, right?

But Cara Elison, Kat Bailey, Daniel Riendeau are all good examples I think. I particularly like the former two.

But I agree Jeff Green would have also been an underrepresented demographic and I honestly think that is held against him too. I mean who the fuck has more experience in the game's industry than Jeff Green? Yet the dude ended up going game testing pretty much admitting it wasn't his first choice of gigs because he couldn't find a gig doing what he's most qualified to do.

I wish that Kat Bailey "Castlevania LOS2" article didn't weight so heavily on me. She was absolutely fantastic at 1up. I honestly can't remember if she was good in front of a camera.

I miss the 1up show.

only the giant bomb community can turn the simple hiring of two well qualified staff members into the grand struggle for videogames equal opportunity.

this shit is so stupid.

I wonder how many people applied for that job. To me Giant Bomb (my favourite video games site) always seems like this tiny company that's more like a family business compared to juggernauts such as IGN and Kotaku. But making a living out of video game writing is tough, so I guess you'd try to get a job wherever you can.

I will say that the bolded plus the Greg Miller antics not resulting in anywhere near the same reaction as Leigh's drunken night have made me somewhat uncomfortable.

It's difficult to argue against the idea that there's at least an appearance of a double-standard.

I felt embarassed for Leigh on those shows. But I felt embarassed for everybody in the room when Greg stripped off his shirt and generally acted like a giant ass even knocking off beer cans deliberately for no reason whatsoever. Leigh said some dumb things but nothing comes close to that level of buffoonery. If a women did anything close to that stuff they would literally probably have to shut down the live stream to sort things out before returning to the broadcast.

Everyone. And more directly so than people here. Not that what's happened here is great.

So I've looked into what's going on, somewhat. I guess there are people complaining about not being hired, and then people harassing the ones complaining? While I understand the complaints and discussions, some of the stuff being said is a bit ridiculous. Of course the people harassing others are way out of bounds, no matter what is being said.

The whole thing just seems like a bad situation.

775 yo

Also tweet delete. tweet delete.

Ryback agrees

Didn't she cast the first stone? All this is crazy simply because the Internet feels the wrong people were hired.

Potted history.

People were mostly laughing about her drunken antics - lots of us found them amusing - then she accused the people commenting of being sexist, that a drunk man would never get flack.

So of course a number of idiots started making vile insults. They are usually the same people and just look for any excuse.

Leigh hit back, lumping the whole "community" together with the idiots and said something along the lines of the GB staff should come down hard on them - which they did on their own forums - but the biggest trouble makers do it over twitter.

Then Ryan "accidentley" leaked a screen shot of an IM conversation (think it was with Dave) calling her a psycho.

She has been taking jabs at GB ever since. I thought she was over it after getting friendly with Patrick but I guess not.

I don't agree with Kat about the Castlevania 2 piece but that doesn't stop me from liking her in general. Nobody bats 1.00.

agreed... also being drunk on a podcast where everyone is drunk shouldn't get that kinda shit regardles... but it seems over the years she keeps poking people with it, when it should have been let go long time ago

Feel so bad for the GB team on this. I do not believe in tokenism or positive-discrimination (or whatever) in the SLIGHTEST. I have a ton of respect for them and don't for one second believe they wouldn't hire a woman if the right one came along. I think equality is key, and acting as though two white male hires are, like, AUTOMATICALLY not striving for equality is a twisted view of what that word means.

And as much as I want to say this lady is making a non-issue into a problem, I now feel like I can't because frankly her entire social media presence is probably going to be miserable enough as is. I don't want to join the pile. I feel both annoyed and sympathetic towards here.

I remember saying at the time I thought Greg acted worse than Leigh did.

Totally, they can't all be winners.

But that one was just...well whatever, she has a glistening portfolio, but I believe she's currently in the UK, so I doubt she would have worked either.

"getting back to work. literally everything i write is more interesting than everything most of the gb staff does. bye haters"

Well then.

Well then.

Yes i believe she writes for The Guardian i believe. I have zero problem with her work.

Edit Woah

Zoe is not really the best fit for GB.

I only saw Cara the one time at the E3 panel.
She seemed like a pretty good guest, and would probably fit in. But right now, GB needed someone to help fill the Vinny/Ryan shaped void, and Dan was a much safer choice in that regard.

Maybe Giant Bomb should have requested a binder full of women.

Do people hold GB at a higher standard that they're getting so much flack for this? Or was this just a long time coming for the industry?

Anyone recall the last time there was so much discussion over new hirings in the industry?
So much drama over one of my favorite sites, I wished the people hurling insults/harassment would just calm down.

I think part of the problem is that the GB community has latched onto 775 and won't let go. It's easy to understand why someone would take that as a constant attack, as I doubt she looks back on her appearance fondly. I certainly know that I wouldn't want a host of people constantly bringing up my embarrassing moments.

I get the sense that when that number pops up that the GB staff is kind of embarrassed and want to get past it, but I could easily be reading too much into things.

Leigh Alexander makes an interesting point about something, then tweets "anything I write is better than anything the Giant bomb staff does" then deletes.

No idea what compels people to lash out like that,

Cara has done some good work on Eurogamer. I wouldn't be surprised if they pick her up. Eurogamer is good at what it does.

I don't understand it at all. Patrick is pretty much the only one to broach social issues, the rest of the crew barely touches any of it. Hell, Vinny says a ton of stuff on the podcast that could be taken extremely wrong by the Twitter crowd.

Zoe seems like she has a lot she wants to do which requires her to be away from a desk a lot. That's cool, but I working at a company that would keep her tethered down doesn't seem like the best fit for her or said company.

insecurity and immaturity

Anger. Frustration. It happens to us all.

Aren't Patrick and Leigh friends? He frequently links to her work, which I too agree she is a great writer, and he wasn't on staff during that whole E3 thing.

Considering what she went through and continues to go through her comment shouldn't phase anyone. Makes perfect sense. I would be angry too.

How does making the tweet remarks and deleting them help the situation.. if she didnt make those every so often.. people would have let it be by now I think it was a long ago.

She's intentionally riling people up now, like some sort of psycho vicious circle.. and I have enjoyed her appearances in shut up and sit down.. but man..

That's just ridiculous, and I understand where some of the backlash comes from on the part of the community. Some of the things being said about Giant Bomb are ludicrous. That said, the best thing is to just ignore them altogether. If someone wants to throw a fit and act immature, the answer is not to harass and act in kind. Just let it go.

Anyway, that's just the way I see it.

It's both.

I'm really happy that Jeff spoke up, but given what I've heard about some particularly gross things being said on Twitter/the forums, I'd like to see more than just a vague tweet. There are parts of the Giant Bomb community that have always been pretty bad and this is as good a time as any for cutting them off.

EDIT: That Reddit link gets into some of what I was talking about, ugh.
