Damn, I guess this is what FGC members go through whenever some bad eggs makes their community look bad and are grouped together in the same breath. I'm beginning to feel your pain :(

But I am not going to demonize her for a tweet response in the face of constant abuse. She reacted like most human beings have and would given the circumstances.

In a real life situation, I would agree.

She's the one actively reading the tweets lobbed against her and letting herself get angry and then proceeding to type out an angry tweet and hit the submit button. She should know all well that this is the equivalent to using a megaphone to a crowd of thousands. Anyone who uses their real name and face on Twitter needs to know this.

I probably spent ~ 2 hours today reading twitter and forums. It didn't raise my awareness for diversity or change my opinion on how to deal with it. Reading just made me sad and hopeless. So for now, I should finally focus back on watching soccer. And deal with diversity issues in a small scale myself, instead of in a global "discussion" where the insults and rash outcries of a few dominate and marginalize the valid points of both sides.

Context, dude.

This is directly about the comment that Samantha made in that tweet.

"I think in all of this I'm most angry with myself for once *honestly* believing that @giantbomb would hire someone who wasn't a white guy."

Now tell me, is there any situation in which she would have accepted a white male being hired based off that tweet? Doesn't seem like it. In her book, hiring more white males was simply unacceptable, and anger-inducing.

Yes, I'd say I'm being more reasonable than her in this case.

I said what I said because the conversation we could have right now will go nowhere. We do not agree at all on a fundamental level. I feel with an industry full of white men talking about video games and so little alternate perspectives when hiring you should maybe step a little out of your comfort zone. If you are a decent human being it probably won't require much of a walk. When you still have zero representation from anyone other than a white man on staff it's unfortunate. There is a women or person of color they could have hired that was qualified. They exist. End of story.

You don't agree with this so where do we go?

i really need to understand how the fight for diversity in the workplace seems to have become " actively discriminate against cisgender white males" for some people. this shit is bananas.

I think that's a bit disingenuous. I think the guys at giantbomb are really cool, and they make good stuff, but when literally everyone you employ is a white man I think it doesn't hurt to ask why that is, even if there may be a good answer. The question is worth asking.

Sure, I was slightly disappointed when I found out GB hired two white men, but whatever they're hired and they're awesome dudes. It's surprising, this issue exploding as big as it did.

Also are people really attacking Jason & Dan! about this?! I really hope not.

I'll never be disappointed when qualified people land a job. They're people. No matter what gender or race, they're people.

It's really weird how so many people are saying "x person was receiving a lot of negativity and they lashed out against it, thus, their completely misguided anger and thoughtlessly poor responses should be completely ignored and forgiven."

You're not justified in being rude to an entire group of people simply because one person who does NOT represent the entirety of the group is being a jerk.

Neither side is in the clear here. Both are doing wrong things. Neither is defensible. It's never okay to aim your anger with a specific person or thing at some other person or thing.

Leigh Alexander says some really horrible, mean-spirited things sometimes. She really needs to examine the way she talks to others and the things she tweets. I quit following her when she went ballistic on the Player One Podcast guys and made fun of all the people that lost their jobs when the game magazines started to go under. Honestly, I'm surprised she still gets as much work as she does with that kind of attitude. That being said, people just need to learn to ignore her at this point. Calling her names is obviously not going to help the situation and has only resulted in more issues. The internet really needs a lesson in ethics..

But why don't we see that kinda comments when ign and polygon hire yet another white guy? Thats the thing I dont get.. attack a small site of 5 guys, that needed two people to come in that would require no to very little training and hit the ground running because they are down to 3 people in SF.. is not like is a stable place with 8 people running smoothly without issues for a whole year or something.

I have to say, I wanted to give Samantha Allen the benefit of the doubt about her comments, but I went to look at her tweets/retweets over the past day and they're....gross. I feel bad for Dan and Jason, they're getting so much shit flung "at them" just for being hired.

Not that Samantha isn't having undefendable gross comments flung at her too, of course.
I think what really hurt get argument in my eyes is she didn't even apply for the job and she's freaking out about it. She doesn't deserve to be insulted or anything but the question about them being the most qualified is a valid one and far from trolling in my opinion.

I think this, ultimately, is the issue that "awareness" for a lot of social issues is facing right now.

How often have outcries like this happened in the past year? Now how many of those outcries actually left you feeling like you leaned something, or that others learned something, or that it was a good step forward in any way? For me at least, very few of them. I'm very often seeing both sides of any social issue involving games completely stumble and mishandle these issues.

On top of that, every situation like this - and especially this one today, I bet - is some group of people's first or most notable encounter with feminist/social issues, and honestly I don't feel confident that it's going to leave a lot of people wanting to learn more about these issues. It's more likely to make those uneducated people think "wow this is fucking dumb" and pay it less mind to them in the future. And that's a very sad thing.

I guess apologie is a bad word. I'd just like for Patrick to write about this instead of tweeting about it. This has to be addressed.

Even if the answer is "they hire their friends", and they're close friends with mostly white males (as am I), even though they have no personal bias against people who have different appearances or opinions as them (as I do not), then what is the charge here? "Giantbomb is a friends club"? To whom do they answer that requires them to be anything else?

The insults and slurs and whatever are real life to her. If you want to sit on your throne of judgment, go ahead, but you'll be indicting just about anyone and everyone. So, you're right; she is guilty of getting angry and tweeting while being abused.

The next time Giant Bomb has an open position, I would suggest the following process:

  1. Require everyone interested in the job to show up at the Galloping Ghost Arcade in Illinois.
    1. Start a Primal Rage II tournament among the applicants.
  2. Make the applicants think the tournament is for the job. Record the tournament.
  3. Take all the people that are funny on camera, advance them to a round of live shows i.e. American Idol style.
  4. Every week have a different challenge, eliminating one to two contestants a week.
  5. When it comes down to two or three people, let premium members vote for their favorite.
  6. Winner gets the job.
  7. And Finally, have Epic Records (formerly CBS) release a single (think inspirational Ballad) of the winner.

Everyone wins.

lol she can't win. If she applied then she's just bitter about not being hired. If she didn't apply then why should she care about someone else not getting hired?

The answer by the way is she cares about the greater representation of minority voices not just herself.

It's sad a non-issue like this is a problem. It's sad we're even having this conversation.

There are real feminist/social issues out there. This is not one of them.

You realize that "they hired the most qualified person" is basically a troll response right? That's why she reacted angrily.

I don't know the whole thing is pretty silly overall, I'm mean acting like it's this prestige all boy's club that's been operating and hiring people from years with this sexist agenda is a bit daft.

Nevertheless no one is perfect and the criticism levied is certainly a valid one, but of course the heart of the matter gets lost in all the toxic vitriol.

Is Brad sleeping right now? I'm sure he is.

No his just doing the sensible thing and keep his mouth shut....GB crew didnt start all this, the professional thing to do is dont communicate anything and let it blow over. They probably all have bigger things on their minds with a big anniversary coming up in the next few days and dont need this shite at the moment.

Some people are just unbelievable who gives a flying fuck if their white or not, fuck they could be green before i care, i listen to them more than i see them so who gives a shit as long as their entertaining

Also just, LIKE JUST NOW.
Realized that next week like in 7 days it has been 1 year already.

That makes me very sad :(

Please some post an awesome GB gif to make me happy again :(

Which is peculiar if you're talking about Giant Bomb; a personality driven site that is more about Cobra one-liners and lamenting caffeine being removed from Sparks than high brow talk of video games and their place in culture, etc.

Wouldn't quota-based hiring be a strange move in that regard? I understand why folks are upset, but then again I don't.

I need a Sparks.

One thing I was sort of disappointed in is that the original posting was for an Associate Editor, which I had hoped meant they might look for/get some manner of newer voice. A couple weeks later it magically turns into a Senior Editor and it's just another one of the same circle of people we've been seeing for a decade. Which is fine, their choice, Dan's cool, just a tad disappointed.

You don't agree with this so where do we go?

I don't disagree with it, either. I do not pretend to know the intricacies of the hiring process at CBSi and Giant Bomb, or what their internal goals were for hiring. Ultimately, it was their decision to make, and while criticism is perfectly acceptable, and I too am interested in seeing more diverse views when it comes to video game coverage, I'm not going to demand that Giant Bomb not hire any more white men or they can go fuck themselves. That's what I call unreasonable. Instead, I will just continue to seek out coverage that I find appealing. I don't need all of my interests to be fulfilled by a single outlet.

The insults and slurs and whatever are real life to her. If you want to sit on your throne of judgment, go ahead, but you'll be indicting just about anyone and everyone. So, you're right; she is guilty of getting angry and tweeting while being abused.

My key point is that she expressed what most people would feel to be an unreasonable and inflammatory comment toward Giant Bomb. She did so in a very public way. Anyone who has been on the Internet for any amount of time knows that you should expect backlash when you do something like this, and that some number of people are going to act a fool. I don't blame her for letting the comments get her, but I do blame her for being a poor user of Twitter. A better idea? Write up a well thought out critique and link to it on Twitter. Don't just make inflammatory quips about your disappointment.

I think the issue is the "toxic vitrol" from one side is that pain you get when using old school listerine, it stings a bit, but whatever. The other side is using cyanide.

GB is a boring boys club that doesn't do anything really interesting vs. death and rape threats, and slurs that I don't care to repeat.
