Giant Bomb #8 | It's a Hit!

Oh, and people should stop hating Samantha Allen for that tweet. She's a voice we need and simply lashed out on one tweet after receiving hours of abuse.

Embrace thoughtful people with intelligent arguments. Reject shit stirrers.

Absolutely not.

She is doing more harm than good, in every conceivable way.

What really confuses me is this sentiment (also voiced by some people here) that the GB community is shit. While I'm not necessarily an active forum member on GB, I always thought it was one of the better communities out there.

Guys...

Video games!

I think I'll go watch the game or something, I just remembered that I really like soccer.

The "non profit" sport that makes billions, swindles countries into wasting their own money, forces alcohol at the world cup to serve its sponsors and not the safety of its fans?

She is not a thoughtful person with intelligent arguments if that's how she responds to someone. She's just as bad as anyone abusing her.

I'd like to see you take hours of people saying disgusting things to/about you and then see if you can respond perfectly kindly to everything, knowing that everything you say is going to be ridiculously scrutinized by tons of people, possibly leading to more disgusting things being said.

There's also the assumption that anyone sayin these things deserves that kindness, but whatever.

You realize that "they hired the most qualified person" is basically a troll response right? That's why she reacted angrily.

It was a question. I highly doubt it was a troll attempt.

She got all self-righteous about expecting better of Giant Bomb (because I guess hiring white males is unacceptable once you have met your arbitrary quota) and feeling dumb for doing so and the guy responded with a legitimate question that you are assuming is a troll attempt.

This is ridiculous.

This is how Twitter works. It's a public forum in which thousands of people participate. If you can't keep your cool when people respond after you make inflammatory comments, then maybe you shouldn't be on Twitter in a public capacity, or maybe you shouldn't be making highly inflammatory comments that are obviously aimed to make people angry or garner sympathy for your opinion.

Giant bomb is going to have to have a formal apologie or statement on this. It's getting really ugly fast. It's going to get much worse soon.

Yeah very nice, just throw Dan and Jason under the bus cause the internet is the internet. "Sorry we hired Dan and Jason, we won't do that again. Say hi Dan"
Come on now, at this point this has almost nothing to do with GB anymore.

The "non profit" sport that makes billions, swindles countries into wasting their own money, forces alcohol at the world cup to serve its sponsors and not the safety of its fans?

Woa, woa, woa. Now you have started a WAR!
Though sadly you are pretty much correct.

There's a pretty terrible side of the community, but that shouldn't be surprising to anyone. It's the internet, after all. I'd say the community overall is probably better than most.

According to Jeff, a lot of people will create accounts just to harass GB crew/guests/community members. People who are actually a part of the community I imagine aren't all bad.

She posted a stupid tweet. Someone responded with a non-hurtful response. She responded with that.

I don't think there's any context in the world that could make her not look like a complete tool bag.

She is/was getting trolled all day on Twitter, by a few idiots
Enough such tweets will get under your skin
You then lash out at others
A normal vanilla tweets gets caught in the rage
Gets screencapped
People see offending tweet painting that person in a bad light
They get drawn in the fight and respond with misplaced hate to person
The circle goes on

This really is a case of a few people stirring a pot, then the pot exploding.

always expected shit to go down when there was gonna be new hires... didn't expect it because of this shit O.o

really curious if they have some plan of 'introducing' the new folks besides unprof thursday.

Cara Ellison called the people hurling abuse "Misogynerds"

If nothing good comes from this horrible shitpile, at least I have a fantastic new word to call angry people on the internet being sexist.

I wonder how long until we all just recognize that twitter = youtube comments. No one gets all enraged when a youtube comment says "go fuck yourself" or is an insult/threat, these days it's just acknowledged that youtube comments are shit.

Twitter is the same exact thing.

It's something I've never understood. They're just some people in some place in the world. Why their word can cause such a violent backlash I just don't know. And I mean this in cases outside of giantbomb. We've had threads created whenever Cliffy B doesn't like something for god's sake.

I tried. Seriously, I will be back when we can talk about giant pancakes made in rice cookers, you know, real Giant Bomb stuff.

Sorry, I just don't follow Street Fighter enough to keep going. All I know is that Dudley is the coolest and Jason don't let me down.

Depends on what your view into the community is. If it's just their forums and non-controversial comment threads, than the community as a whole is pretty good. If your exposure is through the stuff that tends to blow up very publicly (stuff on twitter, for instance) or their total shitshow of a chat during some live shows, than I can see you having a very negative view. The GB community swings very hard both ways.

Yeah, I will second the notion that asking Giant Bomb to formally apologize for the behavior of the World Wide Web at large is insane.

This stuff will continue to happen as does many other bad things. The world will spin on.

Yeah man, females, and minorities being under-represented in games media, what a worthless criticism.

In no way whatsoever is it GB's responsibility to represent minorities in games media. They deliver entertainment with whomever they feel is best able to do that. That's really all there is to it.

Totally. That dude jeff replied to who was totally throwing all the GB community under the bus for this is just adding fuel to the fire. I am a proud member of the GB Community and those assholes on reddit do not represent my views at all.

MRA = Misogynerds're Really Annoying

This is ridiculous.

The best part about these "It was an honest question" and "I don't think it's unreasonable" responses is how the next sentence always includes exactly what we expect. Yes you are the reasonable one in all this!

Yeah, it's weird. And, I mean, it is terrible that that's how people conduct themselves on the internet, but that is how it is. Youtube, facebook, reddit, tumblr, news article comments, twitter, they're all the same, but for some reason mostly everyone expects that level of shit everywhere except twitter. I don't get it.

What the heck is going on here? I feel like this is ridiculous to cry about the new hires. Maybe they picked people based on their abilities and their ability to mesh well with the team? No, of course not. They're just racist misogynists.

Getting tired of people blowing up over nothing. I know I wouldn't want to be hired purely based off beyond a minority or a female.

Jeff and Alex should have just hired that dude from the rap video. Who cares about qualifications, right?

I mean, I've said that I'm glad that they hired friends because that's really what the site is about... and the idea that they wouldn't hire friends is a bit preposterous given the history of the site (Vinny and Brad being the first hires when the site was first starting, and then going on from there).

But there's a way to ask that question without a using passive-aggressive attack on someone who believes in workplace diversity. Maybe it's a legitimate question, but it's asked in a dickish way where you assume they aren't actually looking for an answer.

i really need to understand how the fight for diversity in the workplace seems to have become " actively discriminate against cisgender white males" for some people. this shit is bananas.

What the fuck is going on? This is even worse drama then I was expecting.

I also just hope this threads will soon go back to silly memes and comments on QLs. There probably is meaningful discussion to be had about game journalist demographics but I am not sure this thread is the right place.

I don't know if there will ever be a good time. Just look at the new Far Cry 4 thread. lol

Context, dude.

This is directly about the comment that Samantha made in that tweet.

"I think in all of this I'm most angry with myself for once *honestly* believing that @giantbomb would hire someone who wasn't a white guy."

Now tell me, is there any situation in which she would have accepted a white male being hired based off that tweet? Doesn't seem like it. In her book, hiring more white males was simply unacceptable, and anger-inducing.

Yes, I'd say I'm being more reasonable than her in this case. Also, nice attempt to go tribal with this, turning it into an "us" vs. "them" issue. Way to simplify viewpoints. You're a real winner, aren't you?

Sure, I was slightly disappointed when I found out GB hired two white men, but whatever they're hired and they're awesome dudes. It's surprising, this issue exploding as big as it did.

Also are people really attacking Jason & Dan! about this?! I really hope not.

Man, this stuff is silly.

Anyway, really excited by the new hires and real excited for some new content with them!

Me too. Best part of the most recent podcast was hearing that Jason clearly likes different games from the rest of the crew. Love to hear someone who's pretty into fighting games take on the subject in the future. Korra shoutout was great too.

I have to say, I wanted to give Samantha Allen the benefit of the doubt about her comments, but I went to look at her tweets/retweets over the past day and they're....gross. I feel bad for Dan and Jason, they're getting so much shit flung "at them" just for being hired.

Not that Samantha isn't having undefendable gross comments flung at her too, of course.

I can´t wait to see the new stuff from all the duders! Pretty exciting times, right now. Surely there will be a UPF this Friday with the new guys, right?

What about that Samantha person's tweet is unfair?

There is no excuse for responding like that. I don't care how perturbed you are from trolls. Get the fuck off Twitter if you can't respond like a decent human being.

Or don't, but be prepared to be lynched, because you don't just get to insult people in public without a response.

You know what, I concur that with the other posters in this thread that she is not very thoughtful or insightful. I wouldn't even call her progressive - quite the opposite, in fact. I watched her most recent podcast and read many of her tweets to draw my conclusions. And I really, really hate that people are already rallying around her as though she made cogent points as a result of the abuse she received (subject of my previous post).

But I am not going to demonize her for a tweet response in the face of constant abuse. She reacted like most human beings have and would given the circumstances.

Getting tired of people blowing up over nothing. I know I wouldn't want to be hired purely based off beyond a minority or a female.
On the flip side, would you feel anything at all about being hired because you're a white male, the most in-demand constant in this industry?

I get the feeling people just want some self-awareness and recognition of the situation from GB. I'm sure the new guys are fine.

GB will ban anyone dumb enough to post abuse on their forums. This is what GAF does too. Pretty much all they can do, they don't police twitter.

Some people are just looking for any excuse to be vile. It happened a hundred years ago with poison pen letters - the internet just made it a whole lot easier.

ignoring these Episode, I was reading Samantha Allen's feature on Polygon about ''video Game Titles'' Patrick have posted and I don't agree with her argument at all. While there is some basis of immaturity in namings in our industry, the examples she chose are all wrong, and I am actually disappointed she omitted names such as ''Marvel Alliance 2'' where a firm have been paid a whole lot of monies in order to put ''2''

Beside, she also ignored the Hollywood naming schemes especially if one should go on about maturity of one industry against another.

I don't know if there will ever be a good time. Just look at the new Far Cry 4 thread. lol

It is a good time but not the right place. I welcome the critiques Ubisoft is facing because there is a lot of bullshit going on. Having lots of females in your game is not the same as making them meaningful characters, giving them agency or god forbid letting me play them.

Also are people really attacking Jason & Dan! about this?! I really hope not.

Nah, the majority of stuff directed at those two is very positive, at least it looks so from my glance at tweets directed at them.

Yeah, I found that article really, really bad too.

Most of the heat is coming from people who are attacking those who brought up questions about diversity/GB's hiring process. See: Twitter accounts for Jeff, Patrick, Alex, Rorie
