I think what really hurt get argument in my eyes is she didn't even apply for the job and she's freaking out about it. She doesn't deserve to be insulted or anything but the question about them being the most qualified is a valid one and far from trolling in my opinion.
Not to defend her specifically, but I can understand how daunting it must be for a woman or minority to think about applying for a thing like this that hasn't shown any interest in including them.

Also just, LIKE JUST NOW.
Realized that next week like in 7 days it has been 1 year already.

That makes me very sad :(

Please some post an awesome GB gif to make me happy again :(

Does this count?

Ugh do people not realize that posting the position was most likely a formality, Jeff already probably had Dan and Jason on his mind as potential hires side they all Knew each other for a long time. Companies do this all the time.

Also, everyone saying "Who cares if their white men!" are totally on the wrong side of this too.

It is absolutely understandable for someone to find importance in the gender or race of people being hired to represent something they're passionate about.

The problem isn't that people are concerned with it, the problem is the way that people are expressing their concerns, and how people are retaliating against those same people.

That is a good Idea!

Thank you guys and girls so much :)
I really needed that I think I'm going to bed now because I'm really sad now that I just saw that on my calender :'(

But I shouldn't be because I'm visiting Nintendo tomorrow to play all the E3 line up and have a few hours with smash for wii U but still................

Talk to you all tomorrow :(

The whole thing is kind of sad, as I said I don't think Giantbomb is racist or, classist, white supremacist or whatever... However, the way they handle this particular hire was weird, it does add to the perception the Video Game industry is a white male club, seems they hired the "Most Connected guy" regardless of anything else.

I do think a female would have been a great addition to the whole thing.

I think GB had the misfortune to get caught in the crossfire of a spat between SJWs and MRAs/misogynists.

And now you have people being verbally abused lashing out at Giant Bomb and attracting more hatred. This entire situation is just sad.

Was there this much anger when Patrick was hired? I'm curious because I wasn't super deep into Giant Bomb at the time.

i wanna say no the site was still kind of different and patrick slowly integrated into the site sort of earning his way in. but when he did get more exposure i think many people didnt like him including me then when he grew the facial hair went full riker effect and i think hes pretty much tolerable to everyone and even liked by many.

.

SHOCK HORROR

Jeff dared to recruit the two candidate he thought most suitable for the site instead.

This is how the world works. You recruit the best candidate no matter that colour, sex, religion, age etc. You can't positively discriminate against one to help the other.

They hired the guys who had been doing quicklook content for Game Informer for years. There aren't another two people in the whole world more qualified for those positions.

Every time you say "most qualified" you confirm that you are a clown or have never worked anywhere. This kind of a job especially, there's no "well who got the highest score on the aptitude test!", there's no way to rank. Dan is strictly more qualified to talk about wrestling than most people, someone like say Zoe is strictly more qualified to talk about being a cyborg, etc etc etc. Which one is "most"?

All accurate. I don't blame them I'm not mad at them whatever, it's just a little bit disappointing. Like hey, you had a chance to do something cool but instead you did something boring.

Not that his should deflect any critisim at all but this must be a pretty shitty time for Jeff. I doubt he expected that this would blow up that much and coupled with the fact that Ryan died a year ago I can't imagine him having a good time right now.

I don't know the whole thing is pretty silly overall, I'm mean acting like it's this prestige all boy's club that's been operating and hiring people from years with this sexist agenda is a bit daft.

Nevertheless no one is perfect and the criticism levied is certainly a valid one, but of course the heart of the matter gets lost in all the toxic vitriol.
To be a bit extreme, it's sort of like asking someone who is pro-choice "Why do you want to kill babies?". The person asking the question isn't interested in an answer.

But yeah, the internet kills any possible discussion about this topic and both sides sort of end up in a bullshit internet war.

I can understand this, but can you understand how much harder it is for a woman or minority to achieve the same employment history in this industry? All of these white guys being friends and possibly giving each others jobs based on their networking is a frightening idea for a young woman hoping to break in.

What I don't really get is people who say it's a non-issue. Like yes, giantbomb is well within their rights to make the new hires from their friends in the industry, and it would be wrong to say they had to hire a woman, or a person of colour, just to meet some sort of quota. I'm sure that the new guys will make a bunch of great content and I'm looking forwards to seeing what it is.

I think there's a broader point that really does need addressing though, which is why the industry is VASTLY overrepresented in terms of white men, and why talking about issues of gender representation causes such a vitriolic backlash. It's not enough to just say "It's the internet" and act like we should just be okay with the fact that people act like total pieces of shit to other human beings.

Yeah when Klepek left 90% of the group content he became a lot more tolerable

seems they hired the "Most Connected guy" regardless of anything else.

Literally the best way to ever get considered/hired for a position is to know somebody. This goes for pretty much any job.

why talking about issues of gender representation causes such a vitriolic backlash.

Making comments like "I think in all of this I'm most angry with myself for once *honestly* believing that @giantbomb would hire someone who wasn't a white guy." is not going to spark any kind of rational or level-headed debate.

I don't think it seems like they hired the most connected guy. I don't think they hired Dan or Jason simply because they were friends with them in the past. I think they hired them because they have years of experience and are a fantastic fit for the job that would need to be done at Giant Bomb.

Look at it this way.

Imagine that after Jeff got fired, that Ryan kept working at Game Spot. Then, 2014 comes, and Jeff hires Ryan. We already know that Ryan worked fantastically well at GB and Ryans main criteria was "years of experience in the industry, a friend of the people who work at Giant Bomb currently, tons of video experience, and a prominent, distinct, entertaining on screen personality."

There are absolutely solid grounds for someone to see Dan Ryckert and Jason and say that those are a perfect fit for the job at hand.

Welcome to every industry in the world. It's more who you know, not what you know.

There doesn't have to be malice for there to be a conversation about a decision being disappointing.

There's no quicker way to lose someone's respect than to be that guy who pretends to be aloof and distant from issues worth talking about.

The shocking horror is that meritocracy actually doesn't really happen in a lot of industries, don't kid yourself into thinking tech and vid games are not a private club for certain stereotypes and demographics.

And using that argument, women would never be employed in this industry precisely because it is so dominated by white males.

What I've learned from all of this madness is that people who believe Giant Bomb is some sexist agenda-driven site, should not have anything to do with Giant Bomb. And people who want to attack and harass others for whatever reason, should have anything to do with Giant Bomb.

Not only this, but for a small site like GB (especially after Vinny left SF) it is vital to get the right people. So hiring somebody who is good on camera, can present themselves and you know you can work with them is just important. They really can't afford hiring some newcomer and risk him being a second Brad Nicholsen.

Yup and those abusing those voicing disappointment are the true villains of all this.

Sure, it's a problem, but with the rise of youtube and twitch it's much easier for non white males to gain that experience. Look at GB's sister site, Gamespot. They employ a number of women, minorities, and even a transgender woman. So diversity exists, but for Giant Bomb's particular needs, only a very few candidates could fill those roles.

Questioning status quo will always be seen by some as "attacking" something.

Personally, I can understand one white guy getting added, but I see how this got so big after finding out two white guys were hired. It's a huge, huge missed opportunity to me.

Its like that in any industry with limited space. I work as a product rep for a large company and sales reps I work with ask me all the time how they can do my job. My response its usually is either I get fired or I quit because there are only two positions in the entire state for what I do with my company. Guess what if I planned on moving on I would recommend someone I felt would do the best in my n position to my boss.

And using that argument, women would never be employed in this industry precisely because it is so dominated by white males.

To give some very relevant context, the position being hired for is Senior Editor and video producer at one of the most respected gaming sites out there, which is currently incredibly understaffed.

I think there's room for that argument, but I don't think GB is the place it should be argued for. They needed to pick the most qualified individuals and aren't in a proper position to make a risky higher, even if it could bring a very interesting and unique perspective to the discussions.

As someone who was just last week called to fill a position before it's officially opened, I can confirm this.
Yup. I think part of the problem is that they had to go through this open hiring process, making it look like they were looking for someone new.
